Behind Enemy Lines

The boy with dark hair and dark eyes

Hayley stared up at the ceiling. She was deep in thought. Her mind was swirling with all the things that happened that night.

First, her father tried to force her to date Ryder, a boy in the gang, then he kicked her out, she spent some of the night in the storm where she got picked up by members of the opposing gang. They took her back to a hideout where they planned to "have fun" with her, only for bad boy Calum to swoop in and save the day.

And now, she was at his house. She shouldn't be here, but she had no where else to go. She didn't even know her way home from here because his house was deep in his territory, a place she rarely travelled. And he was being kinda nice to her too. She had no idea what to make of it. Her father had told her all about him, about how he was nothing but trouble, he didnt "play the game" right. Hayley had no idea what that meant.

She remembered the first day they met, 11 years ago:

Flashback:
"Ew! You have cooties!" Ethan, one of the boys in her class, hollered.
"I do not!" Hayley scrunched up her face in disgust.
Her tiny fists were clenched angrily. Stupid boys.

Ethan and some other boys were laughing together. She stood still, trying to contain her mighty fury. Then, they all kicked woodchips at her.
She tears prickled her eyes, "Leave me alone!"
They continued to laugh at her. She didn't understand why they were being so mean to her. She did nothing wrong, she was playing peacefully by herself when they came over and ruined it.

They suddenly stopped and ran off to their parents, who had arrived to pick them up. The damage had already been done however. She sniffled and wiped her eyes.
"Are you okay?" Someone asked
She turned and looked up at an older boy. He had dark hair and dark eyes.
"No" She frowned.

"Hayley!" Someone called.

She turned and saw her father approaching.

"Calum," Someone else said.

He turned and saw his own father approaching.

They were standing in the middle of an invisible battle ground, opposing sides at each end. Stephen grabbed his young daughter's hand.
"C'mon sweetie it's time to go home," He told her.

She looked over at Calum. Andrew had placed his hand on his son's shoulder.
"Nice seeing you again Stephen," He smirked, "I see our children seemed to have found eachother,"
"Yeah well it's not happening again, you stay on your turf and I'll stay on mine," Stephen snapped picking Hayley up.

She looked over at Andrew curiously. He was a semi-tall man, about the same height of her dad. He had dark hair and dark eyes that he had clearly passed on to his son. He was looking at her curiously as well.
"Hello there dear," He smiled with amusement.

"We're leaving," Stephen interjected before Hayley could be polite and say hello back.
Stephen turned but Hayley rested her chin on his shoulder so she could still see them as they walked away. Her big blue eyes met Calum's and he gave her a small smile. She gave a small wave with her tiny hand before resting her head in the crook of her father's neck and closing her eyes.

*End of Flashback*

She smiled a little bit at the memory, thinking of her five year old self. She sighed and lied on her stomach, closing her eyes and falling asleep.

"Hayley," Calum shook her, "wake up, it's just a dream,"
She woke up with tears down her cheeks and she was shaking again. Calum stared down at her with a sympathetic expression. She calmed down, but the tears were still coming.

"It's just a dream," He whispered assuringly, brushing the blonde hairs from her face.
She nodded and wiped her eyes, "I'm sorry for waking you up,"
"I wasn't asleep," He explained, "And don't be sorry, what happened is not your fault,"
"If I just listened to him then none of this would've happened though," She mumbled, "I messed everything up,"

She was crying because she knew that the next morning, she'd be forced to date Ryder, whether she liked it or not. And it scared her. He wasn't the type of guy who was "boyfriend material". He was rough and condescending and arrogant. He always seemed to put her down in some way, only to lift his own ego from it.

Calum hugged her tightly to his chest, rubbing her back soothingly. She clung to him as she cried, burying
her head in his chest and inhaling his comforting scent.
"Is that what you were upset about?" He asked, "Because you kept saying that you "didn't want to"."
"Yeah," She nodded.
He peered down at her, "What don't you want to do?"
"It's stupid," She mumbled.
"Not if it's making you this upset," He said, "it doesnt sound stupid to me,"

"You won't understand," She shook her head.
"Try me," He rose an eyebrow.

She sighed, "My dad, he wants to keep the gang really close-knit, so he's forcing me to date Ryder,"
His face screwed up with surprise and disgust, "He's forcing you to date Ryder?"
She sniffled and nodded, "But I don't want to, I don't even like Ryder at all, he's arrogant and annoying,"
Calum laughed, "I feel ya,"

She managed a small smile, "That's why I had to sleep outside, because I said no,"
He told her, "No loving father would ever do that."
"But he does love me Calum," She said, "He's never been like this, it's just recently,"
"Well then maybe he's just stressed," Calum shrugged, "But that still doesnt make it okay,"
"I guess," She shrugged.
"No, you don't deserve to sleep outside, ever," He said.

She nodded and he wiped the tears from her cheeks.
He rested his chin on top of her head and hummed.
"Go back to sleep alright? We can worry about this in the morning," He whispered.
She nodded and rested her head in the crook of his neck again, letting the beat of his heart and his humming drift her off to sleep.

"I can't get caught this close to your house," He told her when he parked all the way down the street from her house.
She nodded, "That's alright, you've done enough Calum, thank you."
He smiled, "No problem, I'll see you tomorrow at school,"
"Bye," She smiled before opening the car door and hopping out. She was still missing shoes, but she didn't care.

She walked down the street to her house, hoping her father would be a lot more calm than he was last night. She looked back and saw Calum watching her with a small smile. The same smile she saw the first day she met him, when her dad tore them apart. She grinned and turned forward, opening the door and stepping inside.

Almost immediately, she was met by her father.
"Good morning," He said, looking her over, "How was your night outside?"
"Not fun," she muttered
"Good," He smiled, "You needed to learn a lesson some way, now go upstairs and clean up. We have guests coming,"
"Who?" She asked

"Ryder and William," Stephen responded.

Hayley felt her stomach twist in anxiety. Oh this would be interesting.
