Behind Enemy Lines

"Hayley let me in," Ashton sighed, tapping on her door.
Hayley huffed and stood up opening the door, "leave me alone."
He frowned, "we need to talk,"

"Why? So you can give me the same lecture he did?" She snapped.
Ashton shook his head, "no, just let me in,"
"Fine," Hayley muttered, holding the door even wider so her older brother could enter.
He came in and sat in her desk chair. She laid on her bed and looked over at him.

"Did he leave?" Hayley asked
"Yes," Ashton nodded, "I made sure,"
"Good," Hayley sighed in relief.

"So, are you and Calum, like, dating?" Ashton asked softly.
"I mean, it wasn't ever a spoken thing, but yeah, I guess you could say that," Hayley explained.
"Just, how?" Ashton frowned.

"It was a while ago, you weren't home. Dad said he wanted me to date Ryder and I didn't want to, so he kicked me out for the night. And Calum, well he kinda saved me that night," she gulped, deciding to keep some parts unknown because she felt uncomfortable recounting it.
"Oh," Ashton mumbled.

"Are you going to yell at me now or what?" Hayley asked
"No," he sighed, "i should be mad, but I'm not. At this point, any guy is better than Ryder,"

"Ash...?" Hayley whispered
"Yeah?"
"I...really like him. I know I'm young and we hadn't been together long, but I do."
"I know," he agreed.
"How do you know?" Hayley rose an eyebrow.
"Because I saw," he pointed out, "when I came to the forest. I saw how close you guys were,"
Hayley blushed, "oh,"

Ashton gave a small smile, "don't get too comfortable though, I'm still going to kick his ass if he's bad to you,"
"Oh you don't have to worry about that," Hayley snorted.
"What's wrong?" Ash frowned
"Just...dad," Hayley shrugged, "he's still all into this idea. He told me that I'm going to have to marry Ryder after I graduate next year,"
Ashton's jaw clench, "over my dead body,"
"Not yours, Calum's," Hayley nodded, "he told me if I talk to Calum then he'll kill him,"

"You're kidding," Ashton gawked.
"Nope," Hayley shook her head.
"I'm sorry kid, but you have to stay away from him then," Ashton sighed, "you can't risk him getting killed,"
"I know," she bit her lip to hold back tears.

After spending the remainer of the weekend moping in her room, Hayley felt alright enough to make an appearance at school. She wanted so bad to answer the texts that she had recieved from Calum, but she was too paranoid to.

She decided to walk herself this morning, because she was the only one awake in the household. She got to school and found Jackie.

"Hey, where were you all weekend?" She asked
"It's a long fucking story," Hayley sighed.
"Luke told me that you were hanging with Calum," she smirked, "nice nice,"
"I was, but now I'm in hella trouble," Hayley sighed, "my dad found out cause Ryder squealed to him. Now he's pissed,"

"Oh fuck," Jackies jaw dropped, "so what happened?"
"He yelled at me," she shrugged, "can we not talk about this? It makes me sad,"
"Yeah," Jackie nodded.

Jackie did her best to calm Hayley's nerves. She talked about literally anything that didn't have to do with Calum or her family or Ryder. She decided to lecture her about some weird show she'd just started watching, which only amused Hayley. Nonetheless, she was grateful of Jackies understanding.

Luke appeared and sat down, "well hello there,"
"Sup," Hayley waved
"Anything you want to say for yourself?" He smirked
"You should talk," Hayley shot back.
"Oh look, the devil himself just entered," Luke flicked his head.

Hayley tried not to look over, but her curiosity got the better of her. Calum was walking in, and he was scanning the room, obviously, it was to find her. Hayley was kind of hoping he wouldn't, because any talking would only make it all harder for them to separate. But they met, almost as if he knew where she'd be.

He looked relieved and started to come closer. She shook her head.

"No," she mouthed.

He sighed and backed away. It was killing her to see his defeated expression, but she knew it was right. She wasn't going to be the reason he was killed.

"Come on," Ryder yanked her roughly, "I'm walking you to class,"
"I can walk myself," Hayley snarled.
"Listen to me," Ryder pushed her into the locker, "you better fucking start to do what I tell you or I'll tell daddy that you talked with Calum,"

"You wouldn't," Hayley glared.
"Yes I would," Ryder laughed evilly.
"Youd just be lying then," Hayley smirked.
"So what?" He shrugged, "who is your dad going to listen to? Me? Or you?"

Hayley frowned. Once again, she'd been backed into a corner.

"Now c'mon," he continued to pull her along.
She followed behind him, her head hung in shame. Everyone in the hallway watched them pass, knowing something was up.

She felt Ryder wrap his arm around her waist and continue to walk. She started to wiggle but he shot her a glare. When she looked up she immediately met the familiar brown eyes she'd fallen for. But now he was angry, and it looked like he was angry at her.

She shrunk back and looked down again, continuing to pass by. He was angry with her for giving up so easily, and he did not like what he was seeing in general.

She heard a locker slam and when she looked up he was storming off.

Happy Halloween! I had the most boring Halloween, I didn't even go out and no one came to my house :(
