Collision

I take Harry’s hand and lead him downstairs to where my parents and his mother have crowded around the living room. We take the remaining two seats on the couch, and watch as the three adults exchange gifts.

Anne goes first; she hands my parents a small envelope with their names intricately written on the cover. My mother opens it tentatively, and then a wide smile crosses her face when she sees what’s inside.

“Thank you so much Anne!” She gushes and pulls two round-trip plane tickets to New York City out to show to us. I’m glad that they get a vacation, although they get one almost every month. Hopefully my father will be able to go a full weekend without a work call.

After all of the excitement has died down a bit, my mother reaches around her back and pulls out a small box with a red bow perfectly in the center on the top.

“This is from all of us,” she smiles and hands Anne the box. Anne tears through the wrapping paper to find the charm bracelet that Mom and I picked out last weekend. On the bracelet is two charms, one with the letter A and the other one with an English telephone box.

“I love it!” She beams and hugs each of us. I feel Harry’s grip around my waist tighten a few seconds later, and he dips his head near my ear.

“I have your gift,” he says and releases me, only to get my present, then his grip firmly returns to it’s original place. I open the lid on the large box and find a leather bound book lying in a mess of tissue paper. Taking it out, I open the cover and see tons of polaroids taped inside, each with captions written under them. The first one reads first date, with the picture he took of me laughing in the sunlight.

Tears well up in my eyes. “This is amazing, Harry! How did you get time to do all of this?” I ask as I look through the several pages containing pictures of the two of us, random scenery around town, and even a couple of him and Anne together.

“I took your camera out of your bag,” he shrugs like it is no big deal, which is the complete opposite. I never expected a gift like this from Harry; one that has so little cost, but extreme sentimental value. I am absolutely in love with it that I almost forget to give him his.

“Here,” I hand him the gift laying at my feet with a small smile. He opens it and takes out a smaller box, giving me a strange look as he opens this one. He takes out a small diamond watch with the letter H carved into the center of it. Sitting here looking at it, it seems so cheap compared to the one Harry gave me. Expecting him to be upset, I am totally blown away when he slides it onto his wrist and leans in for a soft, yet lingering kiss.

“Let’s go upstairs,” he prompts, and without my answer takes my hand and leads me out of the living room. When we get into my room, he quietly shuts the door and leads us over to sit on the edge of the bed.

“You aren’t that easy to buy for,” I nudge his side, and he laughs. I had the hardest time trying to buy something for him. Eventually I just settled for an expensive watch that my father helped me pick out. I was afraid that he wouldn’t like it, but he seemed genuinely grateful and happy.

“Merry Christmas, Jess,” he says before leaning for another kiss, this one more passionate and fiery than the first one. Feeling his lips on mine, there is no place I’d rather be.
