Chapter 44

The next morning I wake to the sound of someone beating on my door. I groan and open my eyes, trying to guess why someone would be knocking on my door this early.

"What?" I snap when the pounding doesn't cease. The door opens and a shirtless Hayden appears in the room with a huge smile on his face.

"Don't look so happy to see me," he laughs and jumps onto my bed, pulling the warm covers off of me in the process.

"Get off of me!" I groan and try to push his heavy body off of me.

"Mom sent me up here to wake you. We're leaving in an hour," Hayden climbs off of me and stands by the door. I wipe my eyes and look at the clock on the nightstand. Crap, it's 8:00.
We're supposed to pick up Anne and Harry in an hour.

With sudden urgency, I jump out of bed and rush into my bathroom, ignoring Hayden's laughter that follows. I wasn't planning on taking a shower until after we got there but it would be easier to take one now. I jump into the shower without waiting for the water to get warm and quickly wash my body and hair.

Half an hour later my hair is pulled back into a loose ponytail and I'm dressed in a comfortable pair of jeans and a sweatshirt. If we go out to dinner tonight I'll change but this is good for now.

Everyone is waiting for me when I get downstairs, all happily munching on breakfast. I grab the plate that has already been fixed for me and sit down at the bar next to Hayden.

While Mom and Dad are discussing today's plans, Hayden turns to me and lowers his voice.

"When were you going to tell me that you got a boyfriend?" He asks, raising a brow as he takes a bite out of a piece of toast.

"It's complicated," I mutter back. He shakes his head but doesn't respond, instead focusing on another topic.

"He's heavily tattoed," he chuckles. I know exactly what Hayden's thinking. A year ago I would have scoffed at someone having that many tattoos. But they fit Harry. I couldn't imagine him without them.

"I know," I laugh and so does he. It's been so long since I've heard that sound that it seems almost foreign.

"If you two are done chatting we'd like to leave now," Dad says, both of our heads snapping to look at him. I quickly finish eating what little bit of eggs I have left and slide off of my bar stool to place my bag in the sink. Once I'm done, Hayden joins me upstairs to help me tote down the bags that I packed last night. By the time everything is packed tightly in the car, it's almost nine.

Harry and Anne are waiting on the porch when we stop in the driveway. I move to the back so Anne has a seat and a few minutes later I'm joined with the prescense of Harry. I want to hug him badly but Hayden's giving me a pointed look.

"I am so excited!" Anne claps once we get onto the road. I hear Harry mumble something under his breath about how she'll be like this the whole ride. Anne is very nice, but I hope some of her excitement dies down during the three hour ride.

During the ride I tuck my legs beneath me and lay my head down on Harry's shoulder. He wraps his arm around my shoulders and shifts downward so we're both leaned in a comfortable position. I fall asleep instantly.

"Wake up," Harry's soothing voice pulls me out of my sleep and I open my eyes to a bright light coming through the window. We're driving up a driveway that winds through the woods uphill. The road opens into a small meadow where a log cabin sits with trees lining three sides of it. It's stunning.

The six of us pile out of the large car and head up the front porch steps. On the outside it is a bit run down but on the inside it's vastly modern. The inside is warm and whoever prepared the house for us lit the fireplace, giving the whole cabin a cozy feel.

"You and Hayden can share a room while Anne and Harry can," Mom says and leads the four of us up the stairs.

"I guess we can't do anything if your brother's in the room," Harry whispers in my ear as we walk up the stairs.

"He might hear you!" I smack his arm. Harry just chuckles as he kisses my cheek. I quickly look over my shoulder to make sure that Hayden didn't hear us, but he's no where to be seen. He must have gone back downstairs, as well as Anne.

Mom shows Harry to his room first and he leaves to get settled in. I follow her down the hallway to the last room and push open the creaky door to the room. It's very large, with two queen sized beds in the center of the room. A small fireplace sits in front of the fireplace with a few chairs spread out around the fire. I choose the bed near the window and begin unpacking my clothes into the tall drawer beside my bed.

"Dad, Mom, and Anne are heading into town to get some food for lunch," Hayden informs me as I walk back downstairs in the large living room. He and Harry sit on opposite ends of the couch, watching a football game.

I debate whether to sit beside Hayden or Harry. They both give me questioning looks when I stand there for more than a minute, and I take a seat in the chair near the television.

"How far away is town?" I ask when my stomach rumbles. The small breakfast this morning didn't fill me up at all.

"Just down the road." Hayden answers, keeping his eyes on the television.

"We should do something," I prompt during a moment of silence. They both look at me strangely, but Harry decides to speak first.

"Like what? There's nothing interesting within a hundred miles," Harry asks.

"We can go hiking?" I suggest, looking outside. The sky is covered in gray clouds but it doesn't look that bad outside.

"It's too cold," Hayden shoots down my idea. I stand up and begin shuffling through the hall closets to look for something to do. I find blankets, pillows, and a couple of board games.

"Checkers or Clue?" I ask, showing the boys either game.

"Niether," Harry and Hayden answer at the same time. I sign and toss the two games on the table in front of them.

My mind catches onto something my mother said earlier and I drop to my knees in front of one of the cabinets beneath the TV. Smiling, I bring out the xbox that the owners generously left behind.

I plug the various plugs in the outlet behind the tv stand and soon the xbox is brought to life. When I turn back around, both of them are beginning to look interested.

"What games are there?" Hayden asks as I toss him and Harry a controller. Although I got the game out, I'm not interested in playing the war games.

"Go look," I tell him and he shuffles through the basket full of games. He brings out a popular game and pushes the disc into the outlet.

Instead of sitting back down in my chair, I take a seat between the two boys. The screen lights up a second later, and soon the sound of gunfire is filling the room.

An hour later, the adults still aren't back and the game is still playing. I move from my seat on the couch and head into the kitchen to see if there is anything to eat. The only thing I find is a small bag of pretzels and an out of date banana. I grab the pretzels and sit down at the table overlooking the property.

"Hey," Harry's voice brings a smile to my face and I turn to see him entering the kitchen. He sets the controller on the table before taking a seat across from me.

"Where's Hayden?" I question, bringing another pretzel to my lips.

"He went upstairs for something," Harry shrugs and reaches for the bag. I look out the window at the leaves beginning to fall from the trees as a gentle breeze blows. It's peaceful here, more comforting than it is in town. I would love to live out here.

"Finally," Harry groans when a car door shuts outside. The door opens to reveal Anne and my mother carrying a load of groceries. Harry, being the kind person he is, stands to help them. My father follows closely behind them and kicks the door shut behind him.

"I'm making sandwhiches!" Mom says happily and takes the bread out of a paper bag. I turn away from the chattering adults and up the stairs in search of Hayden.

I find him in our room, scrolling through his phone.

"They're back," I inform him and turn to leave.

"Harry's okay," Hayden stops me by saying. I turn with a happy smile on my face.

"Really? I was afraid you wouldn't like him," I say cheerfully.

"He's a dick, but I can tell that he really likes you," Hayden laughs. I am so happy that he likes Harry, I was afraid that the first time Harry said something rude that Hayden would flip out.

"How did you end up liking him?" Hayden asks as we walk down the stairs.

I shrug. "I don't know. We just clicked."

"I just hope he doesn't hurt you," Hayden turns to me once we reach the bottom of the stairs.

"What?"

"I've seen guys like him. They lead a girl on and just break their heart without any remorse. I don't want that to happen to you," Hayden says.

"It won't," I assure him in a strange voice. Harry's hurt me before but we're past that. We're good.

We join the rest of them in the kitchen and all of us crowd around the dining room table, each with a different sandwhich. After lunch, Harry and I head upstairs for some alone time while everyone is watching the football game.

"It's so warm in here," I say as we sit in front of the fireplace in my room.

"I'm not going to hurt you," Harry says abruptly.

"What?" I don't remember Harry being anywhere near us when we had that discussion.

"I heard what Hayden told you," He answers.

"Oh." I snuggle down into his chest as he pulls a blanket over us.

"I promise." He whispers and kisses my head, igniting my body in more ways than one.
