Collision

“Thank you,” I tell Harry as his car stops three blocks away from my house, “For everything.” I hope I don’t have to explain what I mean. I just don’t want to bring up the events of earlier today.

“Of course,” he kisses my cheek. The skin where he just touched flames and I smile at his sweet gesture. I gather my bag from the floorboard and step out of the warmth of the car into the cool air of November. It would be nice if Harry was able to drop me off at my house so I wouldn’t have to walk three blocks but we would risk my parents seeing us.

“I’ll pick you up for school tomorrow morning,” he tells me through the open window before driving away. I start my trek through the brisk wind and walk down the sidewalk that lines the forest beside my house. Within a few minutes, I see my house on the horizon.

“Jess? Is that you?” My mother’s voice rings down the hallway and a second later she appears in the foyer with a plate of cookies in her hands.

“Did you have fun with Cameron?” She asks.

“Yes,” I lie and bite my lip to avoid from telling her the truth. She smiles at my answer and guides me into the kitchen where she’s prepared various desserts.

“What are these for?” I touch the plate that a beautifully decorated cake sits on. My mother never has been the baking type, well except for trying to impress her bosses.

“One of your father’s colleagues is coming over for dinner this week and I’m trying to figure out what to fix for dessert,” she frowns at a cake that will clearly not make the cut. She swipes the horrible cake in the trash and begins getting the ingredients for another.

“How does this taste?” She gives me a wooden spoon that has icing on it. It takes surprisingly delicious.

“Great,” I say and a smile covers her face.

“Can I bring someone over for dinner?” I dare to ask.

“Who? Cameron?” His name makes me flinch and I earn a confused look from her.

“Harry,” I say quietly, lowering my voice in hopes that she didn’t hear me.

“Harry? The boy your father told you that you aren’t allowed to speak with?” She puts a hand on her hip.

“I don’t see why you can’t get to know him instead of dismissing him as a bad person,” I whine.

“He is a bad influence on you. End of story,” she replies, not meeting my eyes as she turns on the oven.

“Mom!”

“What’s going on in here?” My father walks into the kitchen. I can’t take both of my parents on at once.

“Jess wants to invite Harry over for dinner,” my mother crosses her arm.

“Absolutely not,” Dad says dismissively.

“You don’t even know him! Stop criticizing him!” I defend him.

“How well do you know him?” My dad asks, astonished.

“I just don’t know why you two can’t get to know him. He’s not a bad person,” I ignore his question.

“Okay,” Dad surprises me by saying.

“What?”

“I said okay. I will get to know Harry over dinner.” He says.

“Really?” I ask happily and grab his arm. “Thank you so much!” I would have never thought that my father would agree to a dinner with Harry. This can’t be real.

He disappears out of the room without another word and my mother and I exchange glances. I still haven’t gotten her approval.

“I guess he can come over here,” she sighs and I hug her tightly.

“I’m going to go tell him!” I kiss her cheek before rushing upstairs. My fingers are trembling as I type him the words that I would have never thought I would have typed.
