Chapter 38

It's been almost two weeks since I've spoken to Cameron. Whenever I see him in the hallway or in class, I always divert my attention to something else. It feels wrong to ignore him but after he kissed me on Halloween, I haven't been able to shake the look in his eyes after I pulled away.

I bring my knees to my chest at the thought of Cameron. What a simple kiss to him meant so much more to me. I know I shouldn't be worrying about it. But I can't think about any thing else.

My phone buzzes on the bed to me and, of course, it's Cameron. I go to hit ignore but the look on his face when I wasn't speaking to him stops me.

"Hello?" I answer, my voice croaking.

"Oh, I didn't think you would answer," he awkwardly laughs.

"What did you need?" I ask. I don't mean to sound rude but I just want to get it over with.

"I need to talk to you. In person," he says.

"What time?" I sigh.

"I'll pick you up in twenty minutes," he says before the line goes dead. I throw my phone back on the comforter and roll in my stomach, groaning into the pillow.

After about five minutes of coaxing myself that it's time to get up, I finally do. Since I went to town earlier, there's no need for me to change so I just head downstairs. My parents are in the kitchen, reviewing a stack of papers.

"You going to study again?" Dad asks me when I enter the room. I'm starving but I'll eat when I get back since it shouldn't take too long.

"Actually, I'm meeting up with Cameron." I hate using me and Cameron hanging out together to my advantage but it'll make my father happier.

His face lights up. "Really?"

"He's here," I look as his white car pulls into my driveway. I give each of them a hug before hurrying to his warm car.

"Thanks for meeting up with me," he smiles and I return one to be polite. I'm not sure it's a good idea to meet up with him, but I can't put it off any longer.

"Of course," I reply, staring out the window at the houses passing by. I hope he isn't taking me to his house, I've never been there and it will just be too uncomfortable.

"Did I do something?" He finally asks the question that I've been dreading.

"No, you didn't do anything," I respond with a sigh.

"Then why are you avoiding me? I thought we were okay," I can tell that the way his tone is he's asking about the kiss on Halloween.

"I needed some space," I lie, biting my lip.

"I don't believe that," he shakes his head.

"I needed some space," I repeat.

"Everything was okay until I kissed you. I thought that's what you wanted," his voice is raising slightly.

"It's not what I wanted! I didn't mean to give you the wrong idea but-"

"But you're with Harry," he concludes.

"I'm sorry. We're just friends, though." Each word pains me and I can tell by the look in his eyes that he feels the same way too.

"I didn't realize that Harry meant so much to you,"

"Cameron-"

"How can you still like him? He's nothing but rude to you and doesn't treat you right," He argues.

"Harry is not rude," I defend him even though the words taste like acid in my mouth.

"I actually thought that you would be different," he laughs. I've never seen this side of him. I'm glad that he's shown me his true colors before our friendship got any further.

"Every girl that comes by automatically goes toward Harry. And he treats them the same way, every single time."

"Harry is different with me," my voice is small and barely audible.

"Harry's just trying to get in your pants." He rudely remarks. His harsh words pull me up short.

"No, he is not,"

"He doesn't care about you! He doesn't care about anyone!" He yells.

"Let me out," I say suddenly, refusing to hear his harsh words. He rolls his eyes but obliges and pulls into an old gas station parking lot. I don't know how I'm going to get home, but I just need to get away from him.

"Jess," his tone is different as I climb out of his car. With shaky hands, I text Harry and ask him to pick me up. My parent's will just be worried if they do it.

"Leave me alone," I snap when his hand grabs mine.

"I didn't mean to make you upset. I just wanted to tell you the truth," he pleads, his blue eyes glistening.

"You don't know what kind of person Harry is," I spit.

"Are you sure? I've known him a lot longer than you have," he says as I walk away. I stop mid step but don't turn around, my shoulders tensing up.

"He's different now," I counter. But somewhere deep down, I know he's right.

"No, Jess, he's not," he says as Harry's car skids into the parking lot. With a slam of the door, Harry's across the lot in no time, slamming into Cameron as he knocks him on the ground.
