Chapter 22

"Thanks for dropping me off." I tell Harry as we stop in front of my house. Before my mind can process what I'm thinking, I lean across the console and leave a quick kiss on Harry's cheek before climbing out of his car.

"Jessica." My dad's voice startles me as I walk into the kitchen. I spin around to see him step into the room, the same look on his face from this morning.

"Yes?" I open the cabinet and search for something to eat. They didn't really have anything decent to eat at school today and I'm starving.

"Did you walk home?" He asks, even though he already knows the answer. Without looking at him, I grab a bag of chips and shut the cabinet.

"No, Harry drove me." I grab a soda out of the fridge and pop the top, slowly turning around to look at him. He looks like a mixture of mad and disappointed.

"I don't like him," he shakes his head.

"He hasn't done anything." I defend him for what seems like the thousandth time. I'm sick of having to defend him, he hasn't done anything wrong to either of my parents yet they still pick on him for some reason.

"I've been hearing some rumors about him," he says and sits down at the coffee table. I lean against the counter and squeeze the granite to avoid lashing out.

"What kind?" I play dumb.

"I've heard he's had a rough past." He locks eyes with me. Harry's mentioned his past sometimes but I'm just in the dark as everyone else in this town. If it was too bad I would hope he would tell me.

"Everyone's had a rough past." I sip on my Pepsi.

"From what I've heard he drinks, smokes, and dates every girl in this town. I don't want that kind of boy around my daughter."

I push myself off the counter. "He's not bad." That's all I know what to say. I know Harry does that stuff but he's been different since he's been around me.

"I know boys like him. He is nothing but trouble."

"He's not trouble." I grit my teeth.

"I don't want you to get hurt."

"He's not going to hurt me!" I raise my voice.

"I don't want you around him." He crosses his arms again.

"You can't tell me who and who not to talk to." I narrow my eyes. I know he can, it just seemed like the right thing to say.

"I am your father. I can tell you what to do and you can't do anything about it!"

"He is my friend. He would never hurt me." I can't believe he's acting this way.

"I don't want you around him." He repeats.

"Don't do this." I plead.

"You aren't allowed to see him anymore. He is not good for you." He finalizes his decision and my heart breaks. How am I supposed to forget about Harry?

"You can't do that!" I set down my Pepsi and step closer to try to convince him to change his mind. He stands up and walks around the other side of the table towards the fridge.

"You are not allowed to see or talk to him. No more rides to and from school." He opens the fridge and acts like it's not a big deal. I can't believe he's being so nonchalant about taking him away.

"What am I supposed to tell him?" I ask, my voice cracking. I can't imagine telling him that I can't talk to him anymore, he'll just lose it.

"I'm not sure but you should figure it out. Tell your teacher tomorrow that you need a new tutor." He takes out a water bottle and shuts the fridge. I storm out of the room and up to my room, making sure to slam the door where they can hear it.

I want to hit something but that would be the immature thing to do. I sit down on the day bed under the window and stare out down the street. Just an hour ago everything between Harry and I was fine, now I'm trying to figure out a way to break things off.

I turn away from the window and run my fingers through my hair. What am I going to do? Ignore him, that's what I'll do. Maybe he'll get bored with me ignoring him and move to some other girl. Then it won't be so hard to say goodbye.

I pick up my phone just as an incoming text arrives. Of course, it's from Harry.

I'll pick you up from school tomorrow.

I take a deep breath before writing a reply.

My dad's driving me, actually. Thank you though.

I turn off my phone only to get another message.

Okay? Well then do you want to come over for dinner.

He really isn't making this easy.

I have a ton of homework to do.

You could do it over here.

I have to go.

I delete my messages and turn my phone completely off to avoid talking to Harry anymore. That was easier than I expected but I know the first time I see him everything will come crashing down.
