You and I

Summary

I know how it goes
I know how it goes from wrong and right
Silence and sound
But did they ever hold each other
Tight, like us?
Did they ever fight like us?
You and I
We don’t wanna be like them
We can make it till the end
No nothing can come between
You and I
Not even the gods above
Can separate the two of us
No, nothing can come between
You and I
Everything I ever did in my life was to please my mother. She had my life planned before I was even born, and now I was sitting in my bridal dressing room only minutes away from marrying the kind of man she had always wanted for me.
I couldn’t do this. This wasn’t what I wanted.
I bunched up my wedding dress in my fists as one of the bridesmaids placed my veil on my head. “You can’t do this, Katie.” I looked over to my best friends, Ellie, Justice, and Kelsi who were all nodding in agreement with Mary Ann. “You don’t love him.”
“I can’t just run out.” I said and adjusted the veil in my hair. “What would that look like?” I looked down at my phone as Liam’s name popped up.
Liam: I know I’m so fucking late at saying this, but don’t marry him. Whatever you do, don’t say ‘I do’.
Katie: Why not?
I rolled my eyes as I sent the text message. He wouldn’t say what I wanted, no needed, him to say. I loved Liam with everything in me, but he would never feel the same way.
Liam: Goddammit, don’t make me say it over text.
I ignored the message and stood up as my mother entered the room. “You look beautiful.” I gave her a small smile as my phone buzzed four more times in the three minutes of silence. “Check those quickly and then you’re needed. Time to become a Mrs.!” My mom backed out of the room and I checked my messages before I had to give my life to a man I barely knew.
Liam: Come outside and talk to me.
Liam: Come on Katie. Please.
Liam: I’ll fucking crash your goddamned wedding if I have to.
Liam: Fine. I love you. That’s why. Don’t marry him.
I stared at my phone as I read the last text over and over again. I love you. Don't marry him. “Katie? Are you coming?” I looked up at my mom as she poked her head in. I looked over at my friends who were patiently waiting for a reply.
“No.” I smiled and looked back down at my phone.
“Excuse you?”
I walked up to my mother. “I said… no.” She gasped and dramatically placed her hand over her chest. “I’m not getting married today.” I ripped the veil out of my hair and bunched up my dress the best I could as I pushed past my mother.
“Don’t you dare leave this church!” She grabbed my arm, stopping me from walking out of the room.
“Watch me.” I took off the small diamond ring on my left hand and handed it to my mother. “Tell Brian and his family that I’m sorry.”
