Alice Hemmings
Chapter Six
My parents’ flight had been delayed so they would not make it until the very end of the party if at all. This released a bit of pressure because I didn’t have to worry about acting too proper. At 7:15 the Whiteman’s arrived looking thoroughly confused as to why they’re favorite restaurant was rented out for them. I cued the guests and we all shouted “Happy Anniversary!” and smiled immediately took over their faces. I congratulated Mr. and Mrs. Whiteman quickly before dragging my best friend to the side.
“Kate, you will not believe what happened today!” I said once I had successfully dragged her away from the crowd attempting to reach the couple.
“What? You look upset! What’s wrong?” she said. We had been friends for over four years when we met at an open house as prospective students for the school that we now both go to. Let’s just say that we knew each other better than we knew ourselves. Looking into her eyes I couldn’t help but let the feelings that I had been holding in since my fight with Dylan come out. I felt a single tear run down my face as I prepared to tell her my story. I hadn’t realized until now how much Dylan had hurt me in the past few weeks until now.
“Oh, it’s ok sweetie! Come on lets go to the bathroom and you can tell me everything,” she said as she ushered me off.
After she had dragged me once again through the crowd, and into the bathroom she turned around and gave me an expectant look. “You can tell me Alice, the only way that I can help you is if you tell me.” She said with an almost pained look at seeing her best friend so distressed. I took a shaky breathe and began my story with running into Calum in the lobby.
After many tears, and reassuring hugs from Kate, I had successfully finished my story up to realizing that Calum was in fact part of one of the most famous boy bands. “I can’t believe Dylan said that to you!” she said with anger woven into her voice. “I know you said that you guys would be ‘friends’ and all but I don’t think you should see him until he apologizes to you. What he did was completely uncalled for and he had no right to get pissed when you were the victim.” She reasoned.
“Yeah, I agree.” I said morosely. As angry as I was with Dylan, he was still one of my closest friends, and it would be hard not to have him around.
“On a lighter note… DID YOU JUST ACTUALLY TELL ME THAT 5 SECONDS OF SUMMER CHECKED YOU OUT?!?!” she said, a grin immediately taking over her face. I wiped away some remaining tears and laughed at her outburst.
“Yup. And they also had a very poor attempt at flirting,” I giggled, easily getting Dylan off my mind. Maybe this wouldn’t be as hard as I thought it would, I thought to myself. Suddenly Kate wiped the grin off her face.
“Just so you know, the drummer is mine.” She said in the most serious tone I had ever heard. I looked at her for a minute and then we simultaneously started cracking up.
“Haha, whatever you say.” This is why I love Kate so much, she could cheer me up in an instant.
“Come on, let’s fix up your make up and get out there! I don’t want to miss the first song.” She said and brought out a palette and some mascara.
