Expect the Unexpected ON HOLD

Chapter Eleven

You know those days where everything that could possibly go wrong, does? Well unfortunately today is one of them, how do I know that you might ask? Because when your day starts off as badly as mine, it's not very hard to tell...
Mum's voice rang through the door as she called for me to come down stairs, she told me yesterday that she wanted to have a mother-daughter-bonding-day today since she doesn't have to work, but really? Waking me up a 7 am is not necessary.

Groaning, I slowly get up grabbing random clothes out my drawers without checking what they were since my eyes are only like a crack open. There's no way I'm going to be able to stay awake if I don't have a shower. I turn on the shower and wait for it to warm up before stepping in, stubbing my toe on the way. Great.

The warm water soothes my tired bones. After I got back from Ashton's house last night I crashed in my bed. I slept for a solid two hours until I started having awful nightmares. I woke up sweating and tossed and turned for the rest of the night, only catching another hour or two of sleep.

After taking the laziest shower of my life I quickly dried off, waking up as the cold air raised goosebumps across my skin. I shimmied into the skinny jeans I'd grabbed and an old Rolling Stone tee before tumbling out of the bathroom and pulling some black converse on my feet. I braided my hair to the side before calling it good and going downstairs to the living room where my mom was sitting on the couch waiting for me.

"Hey sweet pea, you ready?" She smiled brightly and I wanted to groan. It's too early.

"Yep. Where are we going?" I asked as she got up and started for the front door. I trudged along behind her, letting out a big yawn as she answered,

"Breakfast at the Pancake Emporium, shopping, and then we'll come back home and bake some cookies." Her tone was full of excitement. This was going to be a long morning.

After three buttermilk pancakes, six stores, nineteen pairs of jeans, fourteen dresses, and a countless amount of shoes my mom finally decided that it was time to return home. I stumbled into the house with several bags on my arms. There was a major clearance going on throughout the entire mall, and my mom decided to take advantage of it. Money was tight, so every time there was a deal on anything my parents would stock up. I wasn't complaining, I had a couple new outfits that I was ready to show off. But at the same time, my feet felt like they were about to fall off and all that shopping made me exhausted. I dropped off all the bags in my room before heading back down to the kitchen where my mom was already tying an apron around herself and pulling out ingredients.

"I thought we'd just keep it simple and bake some chocolate chip cookies," she shrugged her shoulders as she fished for mixing bowls in our cabinets.

"Sounds good," I started pulling out mixing cups and bumped my moms hip as I slid next to her at the counter. She smiled and ruffled my hair before continuing in her search for the perfect mixing bowl.

We were in the middle of combining the dry ingredients with the wet when I heard my cell phone ringing in the other room. Weird, people didn't often call me. I wiped my hands off on a towel and excused myself before heading into the living room where 'Heartbreak Girl' was playing from my phone. I looked at the screen and saw I had a call from my cousin Andrea. She lived in Perth and we didn't talk often unless something big was going on. I quickly accepted the call and brought the phone up to my ear.

"Hey Andrea, what's up?" I greeted, plopping down on the couch as I waited for her response. She practically screeched into the phone as she answered,

"Violet!? Oh my god you're on TV!"

I sat in stunned silence and felt the heat leave my cheeks as I grew pale.

"What?" I asked, my voice shaky. My fingers trembled as I reached for the remote on the coffee table in front of me, "what channel?" I asked, turning the TV on.

"MTV! You're on fucking MTV Vi!" She sounded even more frantic than before and I took a deep breath as I surfed through channels before finally finding MTV. Andrea was right. There I was, snuggled into Ashton's side with Michael's feet on my lap and Luke's head resting against my leg as his arms were wrapped around my shins. We were a big tangled mess, and I recognized it as the picture that Calum took of us yesterday. I faintly heard Andrea yelling from the other side of the phone.

"Violet!? Vi! Do you see it?" she shouted. I nodded my head,

‘Yeah… I gotta go Andrea.” I hung up the phone before she could say anything else and turned up the volume on the TV.

“Our favorite bassist Calum Hood from 5 Seconds of Summer recently posted a picture of his band mates on Instagram and Twitter with the caption: ‘Going mental with lads and Violet’. His post has been blowing up as the mystery girl has drawn the attention of the 5SOS fandom. Many of the fans are wondering who the mystery girl is. So far the only information that has been revealed to the public is her name and age, Violet Stone, age 17. Who is this mystery girl, and what is she doing with our favorite Aussies? Tweet @MTV and use the hashtag ‘5SOSMysteryGirl’ to join the conversation!”

The segment ended and I sat back into the sofa, running a hand over my face.

Shit.

My mom entered the room, a concerned look on her face.

“Vi? You alright?” she asked and I shook my head.

“I have to go make a call mom, I’ll be right back. Save some cookie dough for me,” I tried to ease her worries with a half hearted smile and it seemed to work as her face relaxed and she walked back into the kitchen, telling me to hurry up. I took my phone upstairs to my room and shut the door before pacing back and forth across the carpet.

Shit shit shit.

This was not good. I wasn’t supposed to be drawing attention to myself. I was supposed to lay low. My parents would never let me leave the house again after this.

Shit shit fuck.

I felt tears sting that back of my eyes as I paced. I had to call him. It was the last thing I wanted to do, but if I didn’t I could affect the band’s reputation negatively, or worse, hurt my family’s namesake.

Shit fuck shit shit.

Time to get this over with.

I had Ashton’s number memorized by heart and I quickly dialed it before bringing the phone up to my ear, biting down on my bottom lip as I anxiously listened to the dial tone.

“Hi Violet!” Ashton’s cheery voice almost broke my heart and I took a deep breath before speaking.

“Ashton, we need to talk,” my voice was low as I spoke and I could hear the confusion and concern in ashton’s tone as he spoke.

“Woah, are you okay? What’s wrong babe?” I screwed my eyes shut and clenched my fists.

Why did he have to call me babe at a time like this?

“I’m fine. I was just calling to tell you,” I paused, collecting myself before continuing, “we can’t hang out anymore Ash.”

It was silent for a moment before Ashton spoke,

“What?”

“We can’t hang out, we can’t be friends.” My voice got shakier as I spoke and I felt a tear slip down my cheek as Ashton started speaking frantically,

“Vi, what’s going on? Did I do something wrong? Did one of the guys do something wrong? I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you. Is it because of the MTV thing? I saw that this morning but I didn’t think it would be a big deal. Violet I promise no one is saying anything bad about you or anything, they’re just wondering who you are. Did you read hate comments or something? I swear everyone’s been nice. I’m sorry Violet, I can ask Calum to take it down…” he continued to ramble while more tears slipped down my cheeks.

“Ash,” I finally cut him off and he quickly stopped talking as he took a big breath of air, “It’s not your fault. Although Calum should take that picture down. I just can’t be friends with you or the guys anymore. I’m really sorry. I like you a lot,” I paused as a sob escaped my lips before taking a deep breath and pulling myself together to continue, “Please don’t call this number. Bye Ash.” I quickly hung up the phone. letting out a loud sob as I heard Ashton’s shout get cut off by the phone,

‘Wai--!”

That was it. That was the end of anything between Ashton and I.

Another tear slipped down my cheek and I wiped my eyes on the corner of my shirt.

Fuck.

Why did this hurt so bad?

Ashton’s POV

I stood, stunned in the middle of my living room just listening to the dial tone on the other end of the line.

I lowered the phone from my ear and pressed the end call button, still standing in the middle of room, and ran a hand through my hair.

Fuck.

Why did this hurt so fucking much?
