The Heartbreakers

Prologue

Kandice's POV
November 29th 2014

"T-this can't be happening!" I sobbed as I attempted to push him away from me.

"Kandice? Please calm down and let me explain." Calum spoke soothingly as he tried once again to wrap his arms around me.

"Explain? Explain?! You're breaking up with me on my birthday for christs sake!" I screamed on the top of my lungs and earned a few confused glares from strangers as they walked past the small park where we were standing.

I did have a birthday party like every other normal teenager but Calum told me that we needed to talk and like any other person who hears those words, I freaked out and ran.

"I know." He sighed rather sadly. "But I do have a reason for it."

I scoffed and rolled my eyes at his attempt to soothe me.

"And after nearly ten years of being best friends and a couple six? Please tell me this oh so great reason." I crossed my arms angrily as I waited for him to speak but he just stared at me like a deer in head lights.

"I - I can't." He whispered barely audible over the loud wind the had taken over as it grew darker and later into the painful night.

My throat burned as I tried so hard to choke back my sobs but it wasn't working. Nothing was working.

Even looking in his pity filled brown eyes wasn't worth it and I knew it was time to get out of here.

"Whatever." I spat my final word as I turned and walked away. My wrist was gently grabbed after a few seconds as Calum caught up with me and forcefully turned me to look at him.

"At least let me walk you home?" He stared down at me while he softly pulled my hair away from my forehead and behind my ear.

I cried harder as I pushed him away but he didn't move so I stumbled away.

"I don't need your god damn pity okay! I can walk myself home." And with that I turned swiftly causing my wrist to fall out of his grip.

"I live across the road from you, so we're going to be walking in the same direction anyway." He shrugged and caught up to me so he was walking next to me.

I kept my mouth shut and crossed my arms to prove how pissed I was. My bottom lip was quivering both from my tears and the cold nights wind.

"I'm so sorry Kandy." He whispered and I let out a loud squeak before turning to face him swiftly.

"You don't get to call me that! It's Kandice to you now!"

His eyes widened and he reached out for one of my hands but I moved away before he could touch me.

"Just leave me alone Calum."

I walked slowly up my driveway, leaving him standing on the side walk with the broken pieces of my heart around his feet.

January 30th 2015

My eyes snapped open and a small gasp left my lips as I sat up fast. I squinted my eyes to get a look at the bright numbering on my clock to see it was five in the morning.

I huffed and fell back against my pillows again.

Same dream once again. Sadly it actually happened and for the past two months I've been reliving that moment every night.

The pain hasn't died down and I can still clearly feel the stinging in my heart when his face pops into my head or when my mum tried to bring him up saying I should 'reconnect' the friendship rather than the relationship.

But I don't want too.

It hurts too much to even try.

I tried my hardest to go back to sleep but after a few hours of tossing and turning, my mother knocked on my bedroom door letting me know that breakfast was down stairs.

"I'll be down later." I lied like every other morning and bit my lip roughly as I decided if today was the day I left my room for the first time in months. Mum couldn't help but bring me food and I had a bathroom so I really had no reason to let anyone see my hideous state.

"C'mon princess, you can't stay in there forever." My mum whispered through the door. She was right though.

It was Christmas break here in Australia and even though it was boiling hot most days, I had stayed inside the whole time.

Maybe it was time to get some fresh air and clear my head.

Slowly, I lifted myself out of bed and sighed sadly as my feet made contact with the cold hard wood floor.

I opened my bedroom door to see my mum smiling widely at me, I guess she was just happy that I had taken her advice and she was just glad to not be alone in the large house since it's just the two of us. My dad left us years ago and my older brother went with him since he didn't get on very well with our mother.

I sighed and made my way downstairs to eat my now cold toast.

My eyes darted to the front door from across the room and I found myself craning my neck to try and see through the clear glass at the top of the door. Before I had seen anything I snapped myself out of it and looked down at my plate.

"Why don't you go for a run sweetheart? You use to love running." My mum spoke up trying her hardest to cheer me up.

"I don't have anyone to run with any more." I whispered softly as I replayed a small montage in my head of different places I use to go for runs with Calum. It was kind of our thing.

"Well... How about a walk? To the park maybe?"

The only park near our house was the one where Calum broke up with me and I'm never stepping foot in that place again!

"I think I'll just go to the mall."

She instantly cheered up at my words and ran over to her purse before pulling out her wallet, she handed me a handful of bills and pushed me back upstairs to get dressed. My mother was a very successful doctor and didn't mind spoiling me but I only wanted to go get ice cream, not buy half the place.

I rolled my eyes and finished getting ready before slumping down the stairs again.

I said a quick goodbye to my mum and had to swear I wouldn't do anything stupid since according to her, I wasn't in a very good place right now.

But can you blame me?

I opened the front door slowly while looking down at my phone, I hadn't checked it in weeks so as soon as I turned it on I had plenty of messages. I was so occupied with deleting all the 'are you okay?' messages that I didn't notice the movement coming from across the street.

"Just go Amber, quickly." I heard a smooth voice say making my head snap up and my eyes lock with his.

Calum.

He gave me a sad smile before looking away and trying to dodge the kiss that Amber was trying to place on his lips.

My guess was that they hooked up at his birthday party which Calum had begged my mum to get me to come to but I rather rudely declined.

My bottom lip shook and when he looked up at me again, I quickly scrambled to get back inside before sliding down the inside of the door.

I feel like the inside of me was twisting around itself as I sobbed and choked on my tears.

How the hell could he move on so fast?

Was I that easy to forget?

"Stuff this!" I yelled and angrily stood to my feet. I walked upstairs while ignoring my mum who was asking me what was wrong.

I threw all my overly used sweats from the past month back into the draws and pulled out all the overly revealing clothes I could find. I walked into my bathroom and pulled out my make up that had been shoved into a cupboard.

"Two can play this game." I whispered as I smirked to myself in the mirror.
