Rags Meets Riches
ⅲ.
Hesitantly, I placed my hand on top of his and he grinned as he stepped in, closing the space between our two figures before placing his hand on my waist. My small hand rested on his broad shoulder and he pulled me in even closer, pressing my front to his. We were standing at the closest proximity when he tilted his head to the side and whispered in my ear. His hot breath trickled down my neck as he asked for my name, the only form of conversation that had occurred between us for the entire song.
“Well, what’s your name?” I asked, dodging his question cleverly. Or so I thought at first until he found a counter response rather quickly like he did this every day.
“I asked you first.” He chuckled deeply, his eyes glimmering underneath the light illuminating the room. His eyes bore into mine and I knew I had no choice but to answer eventually.
“Adelaide,” I said finally. “I’m Adelaide, and you are?”
He kept quiet and bit down on the corner of his lip to hide a grin of satisfaction. While a grin of satisfaction was plastered onto his face, an expression of absolute wonder and confusion washed over my features. He found it quite amusing and laughed. His laugh was warm and filled the emptiness in the room and I found it much more enjoyable than the music that played in the background.
Instead of it being one dance like he had originally proposed. It ended up being four and yet I still didn’t figure out his name by the end of the fourth piece. He was determined to keep it a mystery but I didn’t know why or where his intentions lay as we both parted from each other with smiles on our faces.
