Rags Meets Riches
i.
“This is absurd, I will not let that Styles boy have the privilege to roam my kingdom as a free man, instead he should be suffering imprisonment for the rest of his life.” I heard my mother complain through the walls of the stronghold.
“The charges have been dropped, there’s nothing we can do.”
“The charges have been dropped? And who gave the authority to do so?” She asked.
“King Desmond himself, ma’am.”
My eyes widened at the mention of his name. I haven’t heard that name in a very, very long time. My late father, King Charles, and he used to be good acquaintances until my father fell ill and we never heard from King Desmond again.
“Of course he did!” She exploded.
I pressed the palms of my hands against my ears to drown out my mother’s shouting. Finally, my hands aching from the pressure of pushing against my ears, I relaxed my fingers and found that the commotion had stopped.
I closed my eyes, a single tear rolling down my cheek in the process. “I miss you, daddy,” I whispered.
My father knew how to handle situations like these and when he died, my mother took charge. With the weight of the kingdom on her shoulders, she manages the best she can without him.
I watched as the large glowing sphere rose slowly into the dull morning sky. Casting sunbeams in every direction while it illuminated the kingdom. I stared out the glass panes as the colors made by the rising sun changed, growing more vivid with the passing time. But as beautiful as the morning was I knew today wouldn't be the same as the rest.
