The Spy Within

Old Face

I close the door to the hotel room, still trying to piece everything that had just happened. He thinks giving me this necklace will automatically get us back to the way it was? It won’t be that easy. Well, who is to say that we will? That it will? I’m going after his ‘lovely’ girlfriend for crying out loud.

“Hey, back already? Did it not go well?” He asks, walking up to me. I only shrug.

“No coffees were spilled nor fists were swung. I guess it was alright.” I tell him, setting down my belongings on the counter before plopping down on a seat. “Although…” I say as I remember the encounter with Rebecca. “I do have somewhat information on agent that we are after.” Ryan goes through the items that I laid on the counter as I spoke.

“Oh yeah? And what would that be?” He asks, giving me his back.

“She uses her knowledge of being a part of the Corporation as a threat, very casually. Too casually.”

“How so?” He questions further, now taking a seat next to me, face full of curiosity.

“Shortly after you had left us she came barging in, and trying to take Niall away, per usual.”

“Making you jealous.” He interrupts me with a smirk.

“No, it didn’t.” I counter.

“It did a little bit.”

“No, Ryan. Not at all.” He rolls his eyes still with a smile. “Why are questioning me like this? You know I don’t like him anymore. Seeing him in person doesn’t change anything, even after all these years.” I tell him, becoming a tad annoyed.

“Whatever, just keep going, sorry for interrupting. Continue.” He motions me with his hands to continue, causing me to roll my eyes. The consistency of the repeated questioning of my feelings for him are really getting on my nerves.

“Anyway, when he didn’t do what she had intended, he tried to ‘shoo’ her away. I had later put in my input that it shouldn’t take much longer, especially with him stalling. She gave me a stink eye and threatened me by saying ‘You try anything sneaky on me, you will be sorry. I may be just another pretty face but I am more experience than you will ever know.’, before becoming more, ‘sassy’, kissing Niall and proceeding out the door.”

“And does that bother you?” He asks with a wink.

“If you ask me something like that one more time I will seriously put you in the fucking hospital.” I say in complete seriousness. I’m tired of that kind of bullshit.

“Fine, fine. I’ll stop. But did Niall hear that or no? How did he react?” He actually asks a serious question.

“That’s what I am wondering. She whispered it while being incredibly close to my ear, so I’m sure that Niall hadn’t heard. I’m thinking that he doesn’t know at all, or that she doesn’t want him to know. That’s what is puzzling me.”

“That’s a good point. Maybe they are after someone as well in the group.” He brings up.

“But who?” I question. He only shrugs.

“Guess we'll find out eventually.” He stands up and reaches in his pocket. “Don’t kill me, or hurt me in any way or form. Just, a question okay?” I squint my eyes, knowing that he is going to ask about Niall again.

“Fine. What is it?”

“Did you and Niall ever have something special at one point or another? Before?” He asks, face full of curiosity.

“Yes. We did. But not anymore.” I sigh. “Why do you ask?”

“Because I found this with your stuff. You should put it on. I hope you don’t mind but I read the note that came with it. He did try. At least accept the offer.” He hands me the necklace with the note that had his number. I look at him in confusion. Why?

“Why are you so pushy with this? Shouldn’t you be on my side?”

“I know, but just going over the evidence of what we have collected so far, and I think that he didn’t mean for this to happen.” He tries to persuade me.

“Nice try but I’m not going to.” I tell him, getting up out of my seat and taking off to my room. Ryan quickly tugs on my arm to stop me, and holds out the damn box.

“You will sooner or later. Just give it a go. Come on.” He motions for me to take it along with my phone and with hesitation I do, before scurrying off to my room. I open up my phone and put in Niall’s number into it, wondering why I’m agreeing to do this.

To: Mr. Horan:
Is this Mr. Horan?

I press send, and wait for a message to return. When a few minutes pass with no response, I decide to go tell Ryan that I tried and it didn’t work. I found him lounging in the living room watching some show on the telly with a bag of Doritos on his stomach.

“What are you watching?” I question, plopping down on the couch next to him. He was in a slouched position, his chin resting on his chest. When he looked up at me he smiled and sat up somewhat.

“Already made-” I gave him a warning glance, making him clear his throat and try again. “No response?” I shook my head.

“Nope. So much for that.” I shrug.

“I’m sure he will soon enough. Want some?” He hands me the bag of chips and I deny them, standing up again. “Where ya goin?”

“To get some water. I’m kinda thirsty.”

“Didn’t you get a coffee when you were out?”

“Well yeah, but I had a feeling that the waitress that brought it to me spat in it, so I didn’t drink it and then Niall’s girlfriend ended up taking a sip, so I was definitely not going to drink that.” I chuckle somewhat at the sound of that story.

“Understandable.” He agreed. I head to the kitchen and grab a bottle of water from the mini-fridge that they had supplied for us. “Go check your phone now, I think I heard it go off or somethin.” I hear Ryan suddenly yell out to me. I sigh and do as he said, heading back to my room and finding my phone glowing on the bed.

3 missed calls from Mr. Horan

Just as I was about to send another text, my screen showed his contact name and it started to ring. I slide my thumb to answer the phone call and await what he could possibly have to say over the phone.

“Hello?” I ask.

“Well hello to you too, Princess.” Even though I can’t see him I can tell he is smiling.

“Stop calling me that.”

“Nope. Not gonna. So, I take it that you opened my gift for ya? What do you think?” He asks me.

“It would have been nice back then, now I’m not so sure. I mean, why would you ask Brittney of all people to do that for you? You know there was Carie and Nicki too..?” I rant to him about all of his other options that he could have done, but soon he just cuts me off.

“Hey, I just wanted to make it special for you. Don’t shoot me for trying.”

“Well look what trying got you.” There was a moment of silence, and for a second I felt a small pang in my heart for saying that. But it quickly went away.

“Ari, I know I fucked up, but come on. Give me a chance. Please.” He says so softly that I almost didn’t catch it.

“You fucked up too many times before, Horan. How can I trust you now?”

“Because you still love me, even though whatever you went though in Black Cove made you think differently.”

“It made me think differently, but for the better. Clearer, if anything.” I counter harshly. Ryan quickly rushes in, ready to attack. I point to my phone and a sigh of relief escapes him as he joins me to listen to what Niall has to say.

“No, it didn’t. Look, this is a discussion that was meant to be in person, we can talk about this another time. Can you please just give me one more chance? Last one, I swear. If you still aren’t happy you can go. I promise. We can just start out as friends, if you want.” Ryan started to smile widely and nod furiously. I pressed the palm of my hand to his skull to make him stop.

“Hold on for a minute.” I removed my hand from Ryan’s head and starting to cover up the bottom of my phone.

“Sure, of course.” I could faintly hear him say.

“Say yes.” Ryan whispers. “We need it, remember?” He whispers as quietly as possible. “Do it.”

“I know, but what if he just fucks me over again?”

“We could always become assassins.” He smirks at me. Well.. No.

“Let’s not… ” I whisper back to him.

“Fine, but think of this as an advantage. If you accept the truce, he would want to be around you more. and hopefully bring us with them on the tour bus, or plane, whichever they use to travel. When everything falls into place, bam! We get her, go back, and pretend none of this had ever happened. Yeah?” That is true.. I nod before bringing the phone back to my ear.

“Are you talking to Elizabeth, or Ariella, which was it?” I hear a male voice say over on his end of the line.

“Her, yeah.” Niall tells him.

“Well which is it?”

“Niall?” I make myself audible, which thankfully worked.

“Hey, so, what is gonna happen?” He asks with so much hope in the tone of his voice.

“Well.. I decided that I will accept the-” I was cut off by him and Louis screaming and hollering on his end of the line, making me remove the phone from my ear. When it had gone silent I brought it back to me.

“Sorry… We will behave…” He says in a much quieter voice.

“I surely hope so.” I say sarcastically.

“Ari, Ari, you have to hang with us. We want to celebrate.” I hear Louis call out in the background. Other voices were starting to tell them otherwise, before they all concluded with an agreement. “Are you doing anything tonight?”

“No.”

“Good, because you are going with us out to a club.” My eyes widen at the location.

“Why a club? Can’t we just go to a dinner or something? Or stay indoors?” I suggest, becoming a bit wary that we might get noticed in the media, exposing ourselves. I know what a club is, and I heard that things in there don’t end well. Usually. Well, then again this was bound to happen sooner or later. Might as well.

“Because that is where we always celebrate. It’s a thing for us. So what do you say?” Niall asks in a pleading tone. I look over to Ryan who was pointing to himself, silently saying if he was invited as well.

“Can I bring a friend?”

“The more the merrier!” I nod my head ‘yes’ to Ryan before getting a nod of approval in return.

“Alright.. Just send me the address and time. I’m sure I would arrive sooner or later.” I tell them all, soon hearing a cheer from them.

“Fantastic. We’ll have Niall send you all the info that you will need, so we will see you later care bear.” Louis says happily yet quickly, his voice soon fading away as I would assume he was either walking away or forced to leave.

“Alright.” I smile somewhat, not really wanting to respond to him in the past manner that I had done, as that looks unprofessional.

It was pretty late out when we had arrived at the location I was sent to. You can hear the blaring music outside, muffled by the cement walls. How are any of them not deaf yet? And there is a long line outside? Why would you people do this to yourselves? I sent a message to Niall asking where he was, but I was not getting a response. Great.

“The line is getting really long and is barely moving an inch. By the time we get about halfway through the sun would rise.” Ryan informs me, looking at the front of the line, where the large man at the door is ignoring the people who are asking for entrance. “Should we try the back?” He asks, starting to walk towards the back.

“About time you asked. That’s something that I can do!” I exhale, making pace to the back of the building. The alleyway was filled with many couples, sucking each other faces off and doing many other things that they shouldn’t do in a dirty alleyway. How unsanitary.

We reached the back of the building, just as a man who had an apron around his waist came out of a door, throwing away a bag of trash. The door begins to close, so I motion for Ryan to follow me quickly as I rush to keep the door propped open with my foot. When the coast was clear we proceeded to weave around the kitchen and find our way to the main area.
A waiter passes through the door, making Ryan and I hide behind the swinging door, the metal door grazes our noses before closing. The music became louder as we opened the door out to where the general public is, the heat of the room hitting us hard, already causing me to break a sweat.

“So, where do you think they would be?” Ryan asks me.

“You search that side I will search this one. Whistle for me when you find ‘em.” He gives me the nod of understanding before heading out. I look through the crowds, not able to see the Irish Blond anywhere or any of the others. A tap on my shoulder makes me spin, seeing eyes that I haven’t seen in a while.

“Well, look who we have here.. You haven’t changed a bit. Good to see you alive still, Ari.” He smirks at me before taking a sip of his drink.
