amnesia ~ M.C
Chapter Three
I watch her body. Still and grey. The doctors have put so many tubes inside of her I couldn't count how many there were. Tubes down her throat, up her nose, in her chest, even in her lady spot. Needles were puncturing her like she was some kind of pin cushion. I watch as the dark skinned lady shines a light in her eye.
"Has there been any recovery?" I asked like I did about an hour ago. Ever since they brought her into the hospital last night, I was terrified I might have lost my best friend. She clicked off her flashlight thing and scribbled on her clipboard.
"Same as she was an hour ago, Mr. Clifford. I know you are eager for Ms. Reich to wake up but this insident is very critical and rushing for her to recover won't change that." She explained. I nodded slowly and took Chelsea's hand, the one that didn't have needles in it. The nurse taped her eyes shut again. Why did they have to do that? I loved seeing her blue-grey eyes. They were a color I've never seen before.
I just sat there for another 2 hours, just staring at her still body. Her heart rate was fine and she was breathing, but it was like she was dead. Her bubbly liveliness was contained inside her sleepy staged body. The door behind me opened and closed. Must be the nurse again.
"Nothing has changed, ma'am. She's still asleep." I won't admit that she is actually in a coma. She's just sleeping to me. A bunch of different footsteps make their way towards me. When I spin around, I see all the boys standing there. Calum had a bundle of flowers and Luke had some balloons.
"Hey, mate. How're you doing?" Ashton asked calmly. I shake my head and hide my tears by turning to look at my best friend.
"She's in a coma right now. No recovery shown since yesterday." I explained.
"We were asking about you. Chelsea is your best friend and she's gone-"
"She's not gone! She's just sleeping right now. Don't say she's gone because she's breathing and doing fine. All she has to do is open her eyes." I correct him. Ashton sat next to me in the chair.
"She's not gone, I'm sorry. I just want to know how your taking this all." I sighed slightly. I'm taking this terribly. Chelsea can't talk, move, or see. I want her to move so I have hug her. I want her to talk so I can tell her I'm sorry for making her angry. I want her to see so she can't watch me break down in tears over her.
"I'm doing fine." I lied. That was the opposite of what I was feeling. Ashton half smiled and rested a hand on my shoulder.
"Do you mind if I talk to her?" Luke spoke up. He was always fond of Chelsea. Her second best friend besides me, of course. I nodded slowly. Luke made his way to sit on the edge of her hospital bed.
"Hey, Sleeping Beauty." He said with a slight smile. He looked down at his hands with a frown.
"We all want you to wake up. We miss your smile and your eyes. Calum called your mom earlier. She on her way back from London. If we can't get you to open those beautiful eyes, maybe she could." He said, not looking up from his hands.
"A-and if you don't come out of this, we won't be able to finish our tour because we'd never do anything without you. I know you are trying so hard to hold on and I'm so grateful for that. As long as you are still alive, we won't stop praying. I just hate seeing you like this." Luke croaked. He was fighting back so many tears, I could tell by his voice.
"I-I can't do it anymore." He said, looking up at us. Luke stood up and walked over to the wall opposite of Chelsea's bed. Ashton went over to quietly talk to him. Calum sat on her bed next.
"Hey, boo." He said with a big smile. This didn't really get to him much. Calum was very optimistic about everything.
"I remember when we would make videos for YouTube, you'd sit in the corner with the silliest smile on your face." I chuckled at the memory. It was nearly impossible to not look her way because of that stupid smile. She was just so proud of us.
"I also remember when we were all in our dressing room, you said you'd always be here for us. I know you are fighting to keep that promise. Don't try so hard because you get headaches a lot, just keep trying." Calum said with tears brimming at his eyes.
"Remember whenever we would have a concert, she'd dance that silly dance on the sidelines?" I say, tying to lighten up the mood. I hear Luke chuckle form the wall he went to earlier.
"Or when her eyes would brighten whenever she laughed?" Luke added. We kept listing all her silly and cute moments. There was a knock on the door.
"Come in!" Ashton said. The door opened and in came Chelsea's mom and step father. I stand up quickly and go to shake their hands.
"How is she doing?" He mother asked after I hugged her. I look over at the boys wiping their watery eyes.
"I'm not exactly sure. She has a heart rate and a pulse but there is not response in speech or movement."
"So, she's in a coma." Her step father said. I nodded and shook his hand. The boys stood behind me.
"Would you like some time with her alone? I was going to go get flowers anyways." I said. They both nodded and the boys and I left the room
-One Month Later-
"Wish that I could wake up with amnesia, and forget about he stupid little things. Like the way it felt to fall asleep next to you and the memories I never can escape. 'Cause I'm not fine at all. Yeah, I'm reallt not fine at all. Tell me this is just a dream. 'Cause I'm really not fine at all." I finished singing to Chelsea.
She has been asleep for a month now. The tour hasn't started and everyone was starting to get impatient. We promised Chelsea we wouldn't start without her and we tend to keep that promise. I set my guitar down and grab her small hand in both of mine.
"A month without seeing those beautiful eyes or that bright smile of yours. I think it's time." I whispered to her and lay my head on the rail of the hospital bed. I lay there for a while until I feel her finger twitch a little in my grasp. I shoot my head up to look at her.
"Bambi? Did you just move?" I asked, even though she couldn't say anything back. A little moan came from her mouth. The smile on my face was painfully big. She was waking up!
"Almost there, Bambi. Open your eyes." I whispered in her ear. I watch a her eyes open half way. Chelsea is awake! She is actually awake! I slam my hand on the call button to get a nurse in here quickly.
"Hey, boo boo. How's it feel to be awake?" Chelsea moved her head a little to look at me. Her eyebrows furrowed and she squinted her eyes at me.
"Who are you?" The door opened quickly and a gust of doctors and nurses come piling in. What does she mean? She's knows who I am! I'm her best friend. A blond doctor shined a flashlight in her eyes, making her blink back. They smiled wide.
"Hello. Welcome back." The dark skinned lady said with a smile. Confusion washed over her.
"Who are you people?" They all exchange glances. Glances that I was scared of what they meant. The blond haired doctor sat on the edge of her bed with his clipboard.
"Do you know your name, sweetheart?" She looked around the small room slowly. She looked like a lost puppy. And that was what she was.
"Uh... I-I don't know." She said softly. Her voice was pure sadness. Chelsea was disappointed in herself, I could tell.
"Do you know this boy?" Chelsea looked over at me. I ruffled up my striking red hair and pulled my fringe out of my eyes so she could see me clearly. Chelsea cocked her head to the side, concentrating on me really hard.
"No. Should I?" It was as if someone ripped my heart right out of me and tore it to shreds. My best friend doesn't know who I am. The worst part is that all those memories we shared are gone. From how we first met to our first fight to our first kiss. Yes, Chelsea and I have been each other's first kiss.
"I'm Michael. You know me. I'm your best friend." I say trying to jog back her memory. Chelsea shook her head slightly.
"I'm sorry, Mitchell. I don't know who you are." My stomach churned. She had my name wrong, she must not remember me. The doctors speak to her for a while, trying to get her to remember what happened to her. I sat in the chair I always did and took her hand in mine.
"Don't leave me now that I have you back, Bambi." I whisper quietly so she could barely hear.
