Teach Me How To Kiss (1D AU)

Second Chances

My phone rang. Louis's name was blinking on the screen.

"Yeah?" I answered.

"Hey meet me out in the front will ya?"

"Okay." I hung up.

What was this about? I grabbed my jean jacket from the locker and swung my brown bag over my shoulder. Rushing out to the school's front entrance, I spotted Louis talking with a friend leaning on the rail. He must have heard the clack of my boots approaching for he quickly turned around.

Both of them were wearing sunglasses. When I got a second look at his friend, as he slowly took off his shades, my heart did a quick summersault.

"Well I have meet up with Lilah, but I'll catch you later,"Louis gave a bro-like handshake and turned to send me a wink before walking off.

"Hey Brynn."

"How are you,Harry?" I paused before responding.

"Wondering what I'm doing here but other than that good."

"Are you not here to see Elizabeth?"

"Elizabeth, right…no I'm not here to see Ana."

It was awkward but I was still glad to see him. I spun my heel into the ground in anticipation of what else he might say. I hadn't a clue.

"Are you busy? Am I interrupting anything or do you have a minute?" He asked concerned.

"No, I'm good," I motioned over to the cement bench only a few feet away.

I sat neatly tucking my peach knee-length dress under my thighs. I put on my jacket as well and listened to the silent words that remained in his head and seemed so hard to vocalize. He looked at me differently. Not like the first time we sat at a park bench or the time at the beach when I was with Niall. But it was almost as if he were seeing me as…a woman.

His arm lay on the back rest, rubbing his forehead while the other remained upon his knee. Then he slid his hand to rest over his mouth and gave me that look again.

"Can I say that you look great!" he started.

"Thank you. But how are YOU?"

"I feel like an idiot but it won't be the first or last time I suppose," he seemed indecisive.

"No classes today?"

"Not till next week thankfully. So how have you been? It's been so long."

"I'm doing great. I mean school couldn't be better. My mom is good too. Friends, well… you know both of them."

"Yeah Lilah is pretty fond of you. And Louis… he's a good guy."

"Weird huh, it's like you guys are better friends than we are. How Ironic." I chuckled and then regretted it.

"Definitely," he chuckled too. "Now that you mentioned it, I was wondering…if we could put everything behind us and start over…as friends."

Ooh, those words. To have Harry back in my life, that's what I've wanted all along. But now that I've moved on…was I ready? I know that there were questions lingering in the air, and eventually they would be answered. We didn't have to fill in all the blanks right at this moment, but the steps to forgive and forget were there for the taking.

"I'd like that. And I'm sure Lilah would too."

"I KNOW she would! She doesn't stop talking about you or Louis for that matter…You know what, Brynn? What I really WANT is a second chance," Harry's feelings burst.

My phone began to ring but I silenced it. I was in awe. I would love for a second chance! My phone rang again, killing the climax.

"Are you going to answer that?" he asked.

"No, I'm sure whoever it is can wait," I shrugged.

But it didn't stop ringing. I was getting annoyed. I finally raised it high to see who was pestering me and couldn't read the screen. Why was it so blurry? Confused, I looked back at Harry. Even more alarmed, I saw the background grow blurry as well. What the heck? Was I hallucinating?

"What's going on?" I asked bewildered.

"Your phone is ringing," he said, oblivious.

Then he began to look hazy. No, wait, what's happening?!The only thing that seemed clear was the ringing that grew louder and louder.

My whole body jolted and when I opened my eyes to see my blank walls I realized it was only a dream.

"Crap!" I reached over for my phone on the night stand.

"Yeah?!" I answered in a groggily tone.

"Hey Brynn, are you sitting down?" Lilah asked.

"I'm lying down actually. What's up?"

"You are NEVER going to believe what just happened!"

"O-kay. What happened? Where are you?"

"I just dropped Louis off his house and I'm on my way to my Uncle's. But yeah the strangest thing happened…I was at the café with Louis and out of nowhere I got a call from Niall."

"What?! No way, what did he want?" I sat up, for better hearing of course.

"Well that's the weirdest part. He wanted to know where I was because he had to say something important and it had to be in person. And because I was Louis, I thought it was a safe bet. Once I told him where we were he showed up 15 minutes later."

"So what did he have to say that was so important?"

"Would you believe he wanted to APOLOGIZE?! That's all!"

"You're kidding me right?!"

"I'm not!" she chuckled "I was just as stunned as you are now. Afterwards I asked Louis if he thought it was a joke and he said that it seemed pretty legit. He even shook Louis's hand."

"I refuse to believe that anything pure and genuine can come from that guy, or that family."

"I don't know, Brynn. He never apologized before, so what do you think happened to make him to do it now? It's been over a year and a half," Lilah argued.

"It just seems hard to believe. It would take a miracle for that guy to change," I assured her.

"Well whatever. I'll chat with you later, just had to tell you that."

"Okay bye."

Hmmm…Niall? Nah! That didn't sound like him. He was too prideful. It just didn't make sense. It had to be a joke…right? And what the hell was that dream all about?I don't even own a pair of boots! Was fate trying to send me a message that Harry and I were going to have a second chance?

It was a new year and a normal second semester thus far. Somehow Izzy and I were in the same class and …I was still alive. I didn't know if I'd get pinned to a corner, beat up or have a vicious rumor spread of me around school. But none of the above. She simply went back to ignoring me. Besides, it wasn't my fault what happened between her and Harry; I tried to stay out of it. I still wondered what did happen.

I was in the middle of my Geometry class when I heard my cell vibrate. Hiding my phone under the desk, I tapped my screen to see a message from Niall. Something had to be up, he was asking if we could talk in person. Why on earth would I want to talk to this creep? Minutes later he sent another one pleading to see me that it was very important to him. My curiosity got the best of me, especially with his sudden urge to apologize to Lilah. But I didn't respond.

I had a weird feeling for the rest of the day. You know that feeling like something is about to happen but you can't discern if it's good or bad? Well one of those feelings. I was putting away my books, still breaking my head over texting Niall back or not. Closing my locker I stared at the ground, and noticed a pair of brown boots walking by. Not focusing on the person but the sudden crazy idea of getting a pair of my own. I had plenty of money saved up with very few reasons to spend it, other than for gas.

The more I thought about it, the more determined I was to get the whole dang outfit from my dream. Shrugging my shoulders I decided to do just that. In desperate hopes of putting this ensemble together, maybe Harry would come back to me. Wishful thinking never hurt anybody.

This was actually kind of fun. I had the garments in mind and went on a hunt, breezing through the stores. I found the boots, got the jean jacket and bought the short peach dress. How eerie would it be if I put it on and bumped into Harry, right? I've heard stories far crazier than that before, so why not?

The weird feeling began to make sense as I was driving back home. Was I meant to live out my dream? It had been 3 weeks since Harry broke it off with Izzy. So he was bound to come around soon, realizing his mistake and how we should be together. I was turning on my street and saw a black car. My heart pumped an extra wave of blood but then it sprayed everywhere as I saw it wasn't the car I was expecting…but a black Jeep.

It was too late to drive past my house, so I aligned the car. Well, best get this over with. I closed the door and witnessed Niall sitting on my porch-step twirling a stem of grass, waiting. I walked up slowly in my teal skirt and grey sweater. He slowly raised his head and for the first time he looked… speechless?

"Hey Brynn. Sorry to just show up like this but I was hoping to talk to you. Did you get my texts?" he stood up with childlike fear in his face.

"Yeah. I meant to text back but I got caught up with something." I was skeptical to say the least.

I didn't want to invite him inside since my mother wasn't home, and I really didn't want to be in a secluded room with him. I motioned for us to walk around to the backyard. Following me like a puppy dog, I'd have to admit there was something different about him. He didn't carry the arrogance and superiority he always strutted.

"Thanks for not sending me away. I know I'm the last person on earth you want to talk to, considering everything that's happened," he began.

Walking over to the deck, we sat in separate chairs and I prepared to take every word with a grain of salt. I was actually looking forward to his performance. I would tell Lilah if this was truly 'legit' or not.

"So what did you NEED to talk about?" I cut right to the chase.

"Yes. Well this hasn't been easy for me, no matter how many times I've done it in the past few days…I came to apologize, for everything. For being a jerk, mistreating women, manipulating you… EVERYTHING!" He was facing the floor before looking me straight in the eyes.

Was this for real? I mean he looked serious but…why now? I sat legs and arms crossed, with a muscle spasm coming on from scowling so hard.

"Do you mind me asking why this sudden need to go apologizing to all the girls you've hurt? Not that I don't think it's great, but I'm just having a hard time understanding."

"And I totally get that. I wouldn't expect you to forgive me right away. I mean, I wouldn't either. But it's something that I feel led to do," he went on to only confuse me more.

"Why?"

"If I told you, you'd only laugh and think I was crazy. So I'm just asking you to forgive me so I can move on with a clear conscience and out of your life," he concluded.

"Why is it so important? People screw other people all the time and they live on just fine. Why are you doing this? I REALLY want to know!" I demanded.

Niall hung his head while resting his elbows on his thighs. Clasping his hands tightly, hetook a deep breath.

"I went on a surf trip to Panama with a friend of mine over the winter. We met a couple of guys there that just…they had something about them that was different. Totally awesome guys, I mean…they killed it on every wave and…yeah, they were rad!"

I could tell he was reliving the moment; his face went from flustered to peaceful. He gazed towards the sky trying to explain as best he could. My eye brows slowly started releasing the tension, captivated by where he was going with this.

"And well, to cut the long story short…it turns out they were a bunch of Christian surfers and they invited a couple of us guys to join this bible study they were having one night. Crazy right? I thought…eh what the heck, so I went without any expectations. And I'm telling you Brynn, it wasn't something that happened overnight, but something did happen. It's like my eyes were open, I was surrounded by a bunch of awesome guys that didn't judge me for my past mistakes… the next day I went surfing early in the morning and as I watched the sunrise, I knew that I was given a second chance to be a better person. To have what they had. . . Does this make any sense?" he returned to Earth and was so overwhelmed with emotion.

I didn't know how wide my eyes were, I mean I probably had to push them back in their socket at this point. But this was just way too much to take in. The bizarre part was… I think I believed him. There was something about the way he was describing everything…I mean I wanted to believe. And as they say, it's easy to forgive but not always to trust; that needs to be earned.

"So…you're a Christian now?" I wanted to make sure I was hearing right.

"Yeah, I am…I know I can't believe it myself. But I'm slowly learning things that have left me in awe. I mean that feeling I get when I'm riding a barrel, it's like that but even more powerful. I'm getting to know the Creator who made those waves I love riding so much!" his eyes sparkled of innocence.

"Oh-kay. When did you get back, from Panama?" I changed the topic quickly before things got weirder.

"I flew back last week. I honestly didn't want to leave, but I felt led to come back. It was time to right my wrongs," he smiled.

"Right. Well . . . I forgive you, Niall. I want to believe that you are changing. And when I said it would take a miracle I didn't think that would actually happen…but I wish you the best," I smiled back.

Niall jumped to his feet as though a weight had been lifted. I'll admit it felt good to see someone change for the better. I gave him the benefit of the doubt. Hey, maybe he could change Izzy. We then walked out to the front.

"Hey Niall?" I interrupted him from entering his car.

"Yeah?"

"How's Izzy doing?"

"She's…lost. You know her though, stubbornly trying to pull through. She's got a couple of auditions for some commercials though. You know how she dreams of being a star... She'll be fine. I'm going to take better care of her now," he assured me with a nod.

He drove off and waved one final time before he was gone. That was truly the strangest and most interesting conversation I have ever had, with anyone. I thought it was 'legit'. I laughed but I really did believe him. Now I had to call Lilah and make sure she was sitting down for the news.

Business at the shop was still slow; the weather wasn't hot enough to crave ice cream I suppose. And did I forget to mention that my coworkers loved my new hair. It gave me a couple of ego boosts every time I got a compliment. Not to worry, that didn't inflate my head or anything.

I clocked out early one Sunday and decided to stay and enjoy a scoop of my own. I took out my note book and began to study for a test I had that Monday. Both taste buds and brain equally stimulated as I heard the bells jingle from the swinging door.

"Excuse me? Do you know if Brynn works today?" A guy asked over the counter.

Reacting to the sound of my name, I broke away from my notebook and looked up. My coworker pointed over at me sitting by the window. He turned around and I couldn't help notice his cheeks turn a slight strawberry pink, almost the same color of my ice cream.

Was Harry blushing . . . for me?

He walked over slowly, slipping his hands into his pockets, and stood next to the empty seat across from me.

"Do you mind if I sit down?" he asked hesitantly.

I nodded. I want to say hey, hello or give some warm welcome, but I had a hard time just breathing normally. I thought I would develop a case of asthma there on the spot. I stretched my lips to a half smile, for now.

"Is this too weird?" he grinned nervously.

"No. It's just been a long time," I spoke softly.

I could see the peeping heads behind the counter but I didn't want to make Harry feel uncomfortable. He shifted a couple of times in his chair and then finally brought his hands to the table, fists tight and white knuckled.

"So, I found out about Elizabeth. What she did to you and just the whole story... I'm sorry about that whole mess and how things went down at my party…" he carried on.

"It's okay. You don't have to apologize. You did nothing wrong," I said, closing my notebook.

"All I know is that she hurt you and while I don't know the full details, it was enough to leave an awful feeling in my stomach."

Yeah, I knew that feeling!

"The way I see it, not that you should even care I guess…we could either call it even or just move past this," he quickly picked up on my lost reaction. "I keep overhearing Lilah talking to you on the phone, and I see how much she treasures your friendship. That made me realize even more how much I've missed you," he confessed.

"I did too," I replied.

"You DID? But not anymore?"

His soulful green eyes stared back at me with those dimples peering every now and then. His scent overpowered my melting dessert. But what did this mean? Game on or friend zone? I decided to play it safe and make the suggestion.

"Friends?" I stuck out my hand.

With a bright flash of a smile, and those sweet little dimples in all their glory, he shook my hand. His smile was contagious as I mirrored it; minus the dimples.

"Wow, look at that beautiful smile!" he said while shooting one of his charming glances.

That's when another arrow shot straight through my heart...again.
