Chapter Five

Kate greets me with a friendly hello as I meet up with her and Eleanor in the hallway before class begins. We chat for a few minutes before the bell rings and Eleanor tells us goodbye.

When we get into the classroom, I surprised to see Harry already waiting in the chair next to mine. Today he's wearing a tight white t-shirt with black skinny jeans and his usual boots. His hair is pushed up off his forehead and I find myself admiring him as I make my way to my seat. He would be perfect if he didn't have a rude personality.

"How are you?" I think of the first thing that comes to mind as I sit down.

"Grand." He grumbles and looks at his feet. Great, he's in a grumpy mood today. I've only
known him for a short while but I already know that his good mood comes and goes.

Since we're already done with what needs to be done in class, we sit the entire time doing nothing. I try to make friendly conversation but every attempt I throw at him gets shot down. Eventually he slides his chair back to talk to a boy behind me and I'm left alone.

I meet Cody outside the classroom when the bell rings and we walk to second period together. He tells me about the internship he just got at a museum and I can't help but feel happy for him. That reminds me, if I want my own car, I'm going to need to find a job some time soon to pay for it. We stay silent until we reach class and I break off to go sit by Kate.

"So there's a party Saturday night, you in?" she asks me as I sit down.

"No way. I don't do parties, plus I'm working on a project with Harry that afternoon." I tell her honestly. I've been to a party before but that was back home where I knew everyone. I don't think I can handle going to some stranger's house for a night.

"Oh right, you two have a date." she smirks and I swat at her arm.

"It's not a date." I brush off her assumption and she throws her hands up in defeat. I desperately hope that he hasn't been telling everyone that we're going on a date.

"Fine. But at least think about coming to the party afterwards." she begs.

"I'll think about." I say only for her benefit. She makes a show of clapping her hands together and begins telling some absurd story about the party they had last weekend. From what I heard it seems like they have a party almost every weekend. It's not much different from how it was back home but this time I'm friends with one of the people who is throwing it.

We work together on something and spend the rest of the time asking each other questions. Much like Cody, she plans on leaving the first chance she gets. I wonder why so many people want to leave here so quickly. From what I've seen, this town is small but everyone seems friendly. When I ask Kate this she explains how everything is not how it seems here. A chill runs down my spine and I realize that she's talking about a certain someone.

"Where do you plan on going to college?" I finally ask her.

"I'm not sure. Whatever I feel like along the way." she grins and I hope that she's only joking. Kate seems like the person to go with the flow and I feel a bit envious of her. She's always so calm that you can't help but feel the same way when you're around her.

She brings up the places she's applied and my mind starts reeling. I have a place in mind that I want to apply to but every time I bring it up with my parent's, they always say that it's too early and I need to focus on what's happening now. Somehow I know that they just want to see me go to some community college around here and stay with them for as long as I can. I find myself replaying Kate's scenario, if I was offered the opportunity to leave, would I take it?
