Chasing Angels - ON HOLD
First Day
I woke up to sun streaming in my window. That was weird. I sat up and looked around me, wondering where the hell I was. Then I remembered I was at home. I threw my blankets aside and stumbled to the bathroom to shower, still half asleep. I turned the water on and was shocked by the cold wet liquid.
"Oh! Cold cold cold coldcoldcoldcoldcoldcoldcoldcoldcoldcoldcoldcold!" I shrieked, stepping out of the water's reach. I shivered, then reached my hand out cautiously to feel the water again. This time, it was warmer, and I stepped forward into the spray, laughing at myself.
I showered until the water was icy cold again, then got out and wrapped a towel around my head, trapping my hair inside of it. I brushed my teeth and washed my face before wrapping a towel around myself and sprinting to my bedroom. I pulled a pair of high-waisted skinny jeans on, then tugged a striped tank top over my head, then covered it with a camo trim army jacket. I pulled out my hairdryer and turned it on, trying to dry my thick hair. It worked for the most part, and it dried in its usual loose springs. I applied light makeup, just some eye base, eyeliner, mascara, and my favorite pink-tinted lipstick, which was, for the most part, neutral but had some color to it.
I walked downstairs, half starving, and found a note on the table. It was from Mum, and it said she would be back in a few hours and that there were pancakes sitting on the hotplate to keep them warm. Then it went on to say that Dad was at work. I took the plate of pancakes and spread peanut butter, chocolate syrup, and maple syrup on top before digging in and devouring the buttermilk pancakes. I filled a water bottle with ice and (obviously) water, then wrote a note of my own saying that I was going for a walk around the city and to not worry if I wasn't home when she got back before pulling on my boots and grabbing my bag, making sure I had Kleenex and bandages (I was rather clumsy sometimes and I wasn't taking any chances) and walking out the front door.
I locked the door behind me, then pocketed the key and made sure the spare was still under the false bottom of the mailbox before setting off down the sidewalk.
I walked through the busy city silently, smiling at strangers as I passed. I had just sat down on a park bench to rest for a moment and was watching children play in the grass when I saw a little girl fall on the sidewalk. I instantly felt the urge to go to her, but I waited for a minute for her mum or dad to help her, but nobody went over to her. Confused, I got up and walked over to the crying child and picked her up, moving her to the soft grass and set her down.
"Hey, sweetheart," I said soothingly (that's a funny word, isn't it?). "My name's Evangeline. I saw you fall. Are you hurt?"
She nodded her head and pointed to her knee, then showed me her hands.
I squatted down and carefully rolled up her pants leg, taking a tissue out from my bag and pouring water on it before gently cleaning the scrape on her knee. She winced and cried from the pain. "What's your name?" I asked, trying to keep her mind off the scrapes.
"Carly," she said quietly. I handed her a tissue and she blew her nose, careful not let the Kleenex touch her scrapes. I thought she looked kind of familiar, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it.
"How old are you, Carly?" I asked, putting some Neosporin on a large bandage.
"Five."
"Do you have any brothers or sisters?" I asked Carly, putting the bandage on her knee and taking one of her hands. I got a clean tissue and poured water on it to clean her hand.
"I have a little brother. His name is Christopher, but we call him Chris. He likes to pull my hair," she said, smiling up at me. She continued talking excitedly. "And I have two sisters. Veronica is first. She has a friend who moved to America when I was two. She has the same name as you! And she's friends with Harry Styles from One Direction! Then there's Amy. I like Veronica better."
I stopped what I was doing and sat down in front of her. I knew why she looked so familiar now. "That's why you look familiar! I'm Veronica's friend, the one who moved to America," I said, cleaning her other hand and bandaging it. "Who's watching you, Carly?"
"Veronica. But she's with her booyyyfrieeeend!" she sang, grinning like a ninny.
"Should we go sneak up on them?" I said sneakily, standing up.
"Yeah!" she said, taking my hand and tip toe-ing to a clump of trees where you could just barely make out to figures kissing.
"Shhh...." I said, putting my finger over my lips. I stepped behind a nearby tree quietly. "Stay where you are," I whispered.
I slowly crept up behind the couple, and Veronica's back was to me, until I figured I was close enough, then waited for the perfect moment to surprise them.
Just as they were getting really heated up, I jumped out from behind my tree and ran between them, mooing. "There are small children present!" I shouted. I shoved them apart and kept running, then ducked behind a large tree. I heard footsteps coming my way, and I giggled, then just as Veronica was about to pass my tree, I held out my arm and she crashed into it. I fell to the ground laughing, and rolled around in the dead leaves.
"You little--" she said angrily. I uncovered my face and grinned up at her. "Evangeline?!"
"Veronica!" I said, sitting up.
"Is that really you?!" she said, hugging me tightly.
"No. I'm actually a koala bear trapped in this stupid body. Can you help me?" I said, hugging her back.
She laughed. "I thought you moved to America!"
"I did, but I'm here for the summer! And why the hell weren't you paying attention to your sister?!" I scolded. "She fell and hurt herself! You should be glad I was there and saw it while you were halfway to having sex with your boyfriend over here!"
She blushed. "Wait-- she got hurt?!" she shouted, standing up and running back to Carly. I followed her and picked up my purse, which I had dropped behind the first tree.
"Well, I should probably get going, but it was nice seeing you again!" I said, hugging Veronica and Carly again.
"Bye-bye!" Carly said when I hugged her.
I hugged Veronica and whispered in her ear, "You never told Harry where I was, right?"
"No, I didn't," she whispered back. "Should I tell him you're here now?"
"No!" I said, letting go of her. "I- I don't want him to know I'm home."
"Okay," she said sadly. "Can I tell the others though? They'll want to see you again!"
"Yes. Just make sure that they don't tell Harry, either," I said. "Bye!"
"Bye!" Veronica and Carly said in unison. I waved, then walked away.
As I walked back to my house, I ducked into an alley that I always used as a shortcut when I was coming home from that particular park. Harry and I used to play hide-and-seek in here, because there were a lot of places to hide. As I walked, I remembered all the things we did as children. The little fights we had over whose toy was whose. I smiled at the ground as a memory from when I was fourteen and Harry was sixteen came back to me, right before I left for America, before X-Factor changed mine and Harry's lives.
FLASHBACK
"Harry! Come on!" I shouted, laughing as I ran down the alley.
"Slow down, Angel!" he shouted back, using my nickname that he had called me since we were little.
I stopped and turned around, tapping my foot impatiently. "Why are you so slow?"
"Because you're too fast," he said, stepping in front of me so I couldn't go anywhere.
"Harry, we have to go or else my mum's gonna kill me for being late again." I said, trying to step past him. He mirrored my movements, and it soon turned into a game before I finally managed to slip past him, giggling, and ran for home.
END OF FLASHBACK
I continued walking through the alley, and I was about halfway through when I crashed into someone and fell to the ground.
"I'm so sorry!" a familiar voice said.
I looked up and stared into familiar blue eyes. "Don't tell Harry I'm here!" I shouted at Niall, then got up and ran away.
When I got home, I slammed the door shut behind me, said hi to Mum, hugged my dad, and ran upstairs to change into something more comfortable. I ended up putting on a plain black bandeau, my favorite Bohemian-style wrap/shawl that Harry had given me for my fifteenth birthday (right before I left), and yoga pants. I slipped on my Tigger slippers and pulled my hair back into a sloppy ponytail, then walked to the bathroom and washed off my makeup.
When I went back downstairs, my parents were about to leave. I hugged them, then dished up a bowl of maple nut ice cream and walked into the living room. I turned on the TV and watched the recording of One Direction's interview last night.
I heard the doorbell ring, and I got up, groaning. I paused the TV and walked to the front door, setting my bowl on the coffee table.
I opened the front door, pulling my wrap around myself so I would be at least appropriate when whoever it was saw me.
"Can I help you?" I said, then looked up into a familiar face.
I gasped and dropped my hand.
"Harry?"
