Chapter 11: The Boys
I noticed the rest of the boys. “So, introduce me to your… boy band, right? What’s it called again?” The boys in the background gasped, and Harry laughed.
“Right, we’re called One Direction, Essa. Remember that for next time.” We both laughed, knowing I wouldn’t. If only just because he told me to. “Well, that one’s Niall” He pointed to the blonde one, who waved; “There we have Liam” He pointed to the one next to the blonde; “Zayn” He gestured to the dark-haired one; “And finally, Louis.” He inclined his head towards the one I’d spoken to earlier about this whole deal. I smiled.
“Right, that’s a lot of names… Hello, boys. I’m Vanessa.” I said. “I hope they know I won’t get their names for a long time…” I muttered to Harry, who laughed.
Suddenly, one of the boys spoke up. “So, just addressing the elephant in the room, how do you know Harry, Vanessa?” We laughed, because everybody knew that was not the elephant in the room.
“Harry and I’ve been friends since, like, 2001. Our families went on holiday together, and we were inseparable after that, at least, until I moved to America. Then Harry came looking for me, I came looking for Harry, and now we’re here.” I leaned into Harry’s hug during the last part, and several of the boys got weird looks on their faces. “Harry?” He looked at me. “Do none of your boys have girlfriends?” He laughed, and told me who was with who. “Right, and they never display PDA in front of you, right?” He laughed, and the boys turned pink.
Then one decided to pipe up. “Harry’s shown PDA in front of us, too, though. Before this.” I watched all the other boys turn to him. Harry went back and forth from glaring at him to staring at me worriedly.
Then they started on him. Is he an idiot? How would he feel if he was in the situation? Does he ever think? Like, his brain does work, doesn’t it? Eventually I got fed up with it.
“Guys.” I started, but nobody heard me. “Guys.” I tried a little louder. It didn’t work, and I became frustrated. “OI!” I shouted, and everybody shut up. “Good. Now, I realize that you’ve all just met me, and that it’s clear I don’t keep up with current, like, music and celebrities and stuff. However, I do realize that Harry here has been in relationships before, and I’m not a little kid anymore, so you don’t have to treat me like one. Oi, you there, are you paying attention?” I reprimanded one of the boys whose attention had been wavering. They all laughed, and I think one whistled.
“Gosh, Harry, had to go and get yourself a girl who’s practically born to be a teacher!” One commented, and I’m pretty sure my face went red. Harry smiled guiltily. Suddenly, I remembered something.
“Oh, no. Um…” I started as I checked the time. “Great. I was supposed to be back at the barn by eleven…” I mentioned, as they all checked the time. It was past eleven, that’s for sure.
“Well…” Harry started, “I don’t think we’re actually getting anything done today, so I could come with you…” I made a face, but thought about it.
“Without Harry, we can’t do anything, so we might as well come too!” added one of the boys enthusiastically. The others all murmured in agreement.
“Whoa, boys, calm down! I know they’re farmers and all, but we’ve got 4-H for the beginning of the fair, and that’s generally comprised of teenage girls…” I explained, but they just shrugged it off. “No, really. I can’t have you all distracting the exhibitors, and I can’t be babysitting you. I have to help.” I tried again, gesturing to my staff attire as I did so. They were not moved.
“Well…” One started, and I was relieved. Until, “Don’t you have, like, a back room or something… Where exhibitors aren’t allowed?” I glared at him, then thought.
“There is one space, but…” I said, but the rest of my statement was drowned out by their cheers. “But I dunno if that’s really a good idea!” I yelled over the din. They ignored it, anyway.
