Side Glances
1
This all starts with my years in high school, and this boy I had a crush on. He was popular, but not outrageously so, just, people liked him, but he wasn’t the first person on the list of people. I, of course, was one of those girls that had the band kids as friends, and ate with them in the band room. I didn’t ever get a chance to talk to him, and I guess I brought that on myself. I always managed to sit behind him, in my school the cool kids would sit in the front, not in the back, so I always got the seat closest to the door. I’d awkwardly stare at his head, and the side of his face. My best friend would nudge me and laugh, telling me I should just say hi, but I never did.
My first chance to talk to him was actually a lame excuse. He dropped his pencil. I picked it up, handed it to him, and walked away. Not a word uttered, not a look up, my shoes became the most interesting thing in the world. It went a little like this, for those of you who can't imagine my strange encounter.
Him: *Drops pencil
BFF: *Points to pencil and pokes me
Me: *Picks up pencil and walks to him, stares at shoes
Him: "Hey."
Me: *Shoves pencil towards him, stares at shoes
BFF: *Face Palm
Him: "Oh, thanks, where'd you get this?"
Me: *Keeps head down, walks away
My only chance sophomore year to talk to the Adonis, and I watch my shoes. I pretty much shot myself in the foot over that one.
Junior year, was when I actually talked to him. I spoke to this Adonis figure, and I spoke well. My friend was out the day of this conversation. I wore my faded blue jeans I'd had forever. I loved those pants.
"Hey!" He pushed past a few people to put his hand on my shoulder, standing behind me. He kept his head right next to my ear, whispering. "I have an older sister, and I'm gonna help you out, okay?"
"Yeah?" I urged him on. He put his hands on my hips and started walking, keeping us close, him still behind me.
"Your pants are red, and I don't think they're supposed to be." He whispered super quietly. Little tears pricked my eyes. My lip began to wobble as I adjusted my book to hold in front of me. "I'm gonna walk you to the gym so you can change into some shorts. You have gym shorts, right?"
"I don't have gym this year. Oh god, this is so embarrassing." I put a hand over my face, peeking through my fingers.
"No, no, no. You're fine, don't be embarrassed. You can wear mine. I'll clear out the guys locker room so you can change, then we'll call someone to help you, okay?" I nodded, tears falling.
He had me stand with my back to a wall as he ushered guys out, grabbing my arm and puling me in. He handed me his shorts and stepped back out. I changed quickly and walked out, my pants folded and hidden under my arm. He escorted me to the office and handed me his phone. He stayed with me till my mom came, and then he ran and grabbed my stuff.
The next day he came and asked if I was alright and assured me that I shouldn't be embarrassed, no one had seen except him and he wasn't gonna leave me to walk around. Needless to say I thanked him a lot.
Senior year I decided I wasn't going to creep on him and stare at him, but ignore him completely and focus on my work. So I did. No awkward moments, no staring, no nudges from my best friend. It was nice, but boring. To sum it up, senior year was the year I got over him. he was no longer the guy I had a crush on. I didn't look at him once.
Maybe if I had. If I'd just taken a peek at him once, I would've seen him giving me the side glances I had always given him. The staring, nudging, glances, it was all him. He was the one who had a crush on me. I wish I'd given him one last glance, even for a second, I would've seen his side glances. Damn you senior year. Damn you.
Notes
I don't think there will be another chapter unless by demand. Even one person comments that they want another chapter, I'll give it to them. I just like knowing someone is reading it.
Can I be that one person who ask for another chapter?? Cause that was really good. I loved it!!
