When the Leaves Begin to Fall

08. Perfect Match

I changed into a pair of sky blue denim capris that rolled up around mid-calf. I wore a loose red tank top and a pair of white converse with dark blue and red lines on the sides of the shoes. My hair was left in its naturally curly state, so the beautiful ringlets fell nicely on my shoulders. The outfit was simple, but I felt the need to look at least a little cute.

It’s not every day I’m around the guy I was falling in love with.

Anyways, while I was waiting for Niall to gather up all of Theo’s stuff, I sat down on the floor Indian style and took another random picture. This was beyond random. I just took a picture of my legs, the way they were crossed.

Denise and Greg didn’t live far from Bobby. On the way over, Niall told me some things about himself. There were a few things I learned about Bobby, like he’s a butcher and he always did whatever he could to get Niall and Greg whatever they wanted, but I learned more about Niall than anyone else.

He would cook for himself and Greg a lot, so he could cook. Greg and Niall would take turns doing the chores around the house, so Niall could do anything around the house. Every day, he walked a mile and a half to the all-boys Catholic school he went to, but despite being in an all-boys school, he had plenty friends of all gender. He had a girlfriend once, but they broke up when he auditioned for the X-Factor. It was never really serious.

I also found out that his favorite color is green. He loves all kinds of food, and he loves a girl with a hearty appetite.

It surprised me when he said that because as soon as he did, he looked over at me with furrowed eyebrows. “Do you eat a lot?”

“All the time,” I said, and I cocked an eyebrow at him. “Why?”

He was smiling as he looked forward, and he shrugged his shoulders. “Just curious.” And then he proceeded to tell me more things about him.

The reason he used to not talk much in interviews was because he swore too much, and his favorite pizza is pepperoni. He loves barbeque chips, and his favorite thing to do is sit on the couch and cuddle while watching a funny movie.

It was a great ride over, and I was informed it was my turn on the way back.

Hmm. Could I throw in that I’m pregnant on the way home?

I was surprised by a beautiful woman waiting at the door for us. She wore a bright smile, and her honey blonde hair fell in gorgeous ringlet curls onto her shoulders. She had a couple of age lines on her face, but her olive skin was mostly wrinkle free. She had really beautiful green eyes, and her smile was a warm and welcoming one.

She rushed to hug Niall. “Hey! It’s so good to see you again!”

He was smiling as he hugged her. “You too, Aiofe. How’s he been doing?”

“He misses you, but he’s been doing great ever since that little cutie arrived,” she informed him, and when I walked up carrying the baby carrier, her eyebrows rose. “Oh? You didn’t mention you were bringing such a pretty lass, Niall.”

Niall nodded and looked over to me with a bright smile. “Uh, yeah. This is Oli.”

“Hi, Oli,” she greeted, and she gave me a kind hug. “It’s so great to meet you.” Her eyes were bright when she looked to Theo, who was giggling in the carrier. “And hello to you too, handsome.”

Niall carefully took the heavy carrier from me and gestured towards the door with his head. “Come on, Oli. Let’s get Theo situated inside, and I’ll show you around.”

“Okay,” I agreed, and I gave him a timid smile.

Aiofe continued smiling happily and led us inside. I was surprised by all the baby stuff set up in the living room. There was a play pin in the far corner with toys strewn all over the floor. There was even a little swing for him to sit in and enjoy himself.

And, of course, there was a crib in the corner. Bobby seemed very well stocked up.

Niall gently sat the carrier by the toys and began unhooking Theo immediately. “We’re here, little monster.” He glanced up at Aiofe. “Do you mind watching him a few minutes while I show her around?”

“Of course not,” she said, and she gave us both a huge and warm smile. “I’d love to watch him. Go on, you two. I’ve got him.”

When Niall and Aiofe had talked, I began feeling really queasy. It wasn’t quite noon, but the morning sickness part of pregnancy seemed to be fluctuating between the morning and early noon. I was told it would become whenever sickness eventually, but it would stay closer to the morning at first.

Anyways, I wasn’t surprised to feel queasy. I felt queasy a lot, but most of the time, I never actually got sick.

This wasn’t one of those times, so after swallowing pretty hard, I looked to Niall. “Um, before we start, where’s the bathroom?”

His eyebrows furrowed, but he gestured down the hall. “It’s the room at the very end. Are you alright?”

I don’t know if he saw my nod as I quickly walked down the hallway, but I tried anyways. I barely got the door shut before I began throwing up.

It didn’t surprise me when Niall hurried in here after me, holding my hair back so that I wouldn’t throw up in it, but the moment I had a breath, I began trying to push him away.

“You don’t wanna see this,” I mumbled. “Please go.”

He shook his head, and very carefully, he began rubbing my cheeks. “I’m not going anywhere.”
Despite the fact I was throwing up, pretty violently, his words brought so much joy inside of me that I didn’t mind. He . . . really wasn’t, was he? Even if he knew why I was getting sick, he wouldn’t just leave me to deal with it. He would stand beside me and help me through this.

When I was finished, I leaned back against the wall and took a deep breath. “Sorry.”

“Are you getting sick?” he asked while he carefully rubbed his hand down my hair.

I shook my head. “No.”

His eyebrows furrowed. “Eat something bad?”

“Not that I know of.”

Now, he just looked puzzled, but he didn’t have an answer. Instead, he just helped me stand to my feet and handed me a wet rag. “You must be getting sick then.”

Instead of replying, I just sighed and wrapped the rag around my neck. “Thank you, Niall.”

“Of course,” he said, and he did the most surprising thing yet. He kissed the top of my sweaty head tenderly, in a loving type way. “Let’s go sit you down, at least until you feel better.”

“I feel better,” I said, giving him a sheepish smile. “How about that tour?”

After the tour, we went into the living room with Theo and Aiofe. As soon as Niall sat down in front of him, she went into the kitchen and got me some Sprite. It was very thoughtful, though I didn’t feel sick anymore. Either way, I thanked her and watched Niall play with Theo.

I wanted to, but he thought I was getting sick. Until I could tell him otherwise, sometime when we were alone, I had to go with it so he didn’t get suspicious too soon.

Around four thirty, Bobby showed up. Theo was so excited when he heard his voice that he began laughing madly. He laughed so hard that he fell back on his back.

Bobby didn’t even notice me at first, since I was curled up in the corner of the couch farthest away from Theo. All he saw was his adorable grandson laying in the floor.

This was literally the perfect other family for my child. They just loved, unconditionally. Just like my family, they would do everything in their power to protect and care for the ones they loved.

The perfect family indeed.

When he picked Theo up, he turned to hug his son but noticed me first. “Oh! Hi there, lassie. Who is this beautiful gal, Niall?”

Niall smiled at him. “This is Oli.”

“Oli,” he said with a smile, but it sounded like he was processing the name in the back of his mind. “Beautiful name. I’m Bobby. It’s great to meet ya, Oli.”

I smiled. “You, too.”

Aiofe took Theo from Bobby’s hands for a moment so Bobby could hug Niall, and they hugged like a son and dad usually did. They also caught up a bit, mostly Niall catching up since Bobby knew most that was going on in Niall’s life.

And once they were caught up, they all proceeded to play with Theo.

About an hour later, my phone began going off—right about the time Theo passed out from exhaustion. He was so tired that the loud sound of Radioactive by Imagine Dragons didn’t even stir him.

It was Denise.

I gasped and quickly answered it. “Oh my. I’m sorry! We didn’t tell you, did we?”

“Tell me what?” she asked. “Where are you? Is everything alright? How’s Theo?”

I laughed. “He’s asleep at the moment. Sorry. We came by to see Bobby and Aiofe. I meant to leave a note.”

“Pregnancy brain,” she laughed. “It does that to you, lass. Trust me.”

I smiled. “Or just Oli brain.”

“That too.”

That made me laugh again. “I’m sorry, nonetheless.”

“It’s alright,” she assured me. “I’m about to start dinner, though, in my newly cleaned kitchen. Care to explain that?”

“It took, like, ten minutes,” I snorted. “You’re a new mom, a working mom. We’re bums in your house.”

“Babysitters,” she corrected.

“Still,” I said. “It was the least we could do. Anyways, I guess we’ll head home soon. Like I said, he’s passed out at the moment.”

“Seeing Bobby usually wears him down,” she agreed with a laugh. “Hey. Mom wants to see you as well. Go see her sometime while you’re here?”

I sighed and nodded, though she couldn’t see me. “I will.”

Honestly, that wasn’t someone I was looking forward to seeing. Meemaw was always very overprotective, and of course she heard all that had happened.

One thing was certain. If Niall went with me, he had to know by then. She would bring it up nonstop.

Bobby and Niall had already moved Theo to the carrier by the time I got off the phone with Denise, and Aiofe very kindly helped me to my feet.

Aiofe hugged me gently, still remembering that I wasn’t feeling well. “It was great to meet you, Oli. Don’t hesitate to come by to see us again.”

“Agreed,” Bobby said, and he hugged me as well. Since he wasn’t here when I got sick, he didn’t hug me delicately, but it was a warm embrace I actually enjoyed. “Niall, bring her here more often. I like her. And come by more yourself. The door’s always open for you.”

Niall laughed nervously and nodded. “I will, Dad.” He hugged Aiofe as well and picked up the carrier. “We’ll stop by another day soon. We’ll call and let you know.”

“Sounds great,” Aiofe agreed.

“Come by sometime before Monday,” Bobby suggested, and Niall began to ponder this. “That way I can see him all day.”

“We will,” he promised, and he very carefully led me out the door. “Bye!”

I heard them both telling us bye on our way out, and I was smiling and waving while Niall shut the door. Such wonderful people.

Niall didn’t say anything until we got back in the car. “Is it possible . . . I don’t know.”
My eyebrows furrowed. “Is what possible?”

He shook his head and started the car. “Nah. Nothing. Let’s get this little monster back home. I’m sure his mom misses him, and it’s your turn to tell me about you.”

I laughed and nodded. “Right. Well, my favorite color is blue, like . . . the color of your eyes blue. I grew up in LA. My dad’s a music producer for Capitol, so that’s where I grew up. It’s pretty crazy. Kayti’s dad works with my dad, so that’s how we met. I love roses, a lot, especially the bright, bright pink ones—or bright coral. I’ve had a couple of boyfriends, but none were ever serious. With the tools at school, there really isn’t a hope of getting serious. They all want sex.”

He smiled sheepishly over at me. “I promise that’s not all I want.”

Despite the fact that it made me laugh initially, his words struck something inside of me. What exactly was he saying? Was he saying that he wanted something with me? A relationship, that is?

I decided not to overthink it yet and instead smiled as I went on. “Alright. Well, my mom’s from Spain, as I said, and Dad’s from Mullingar, so Christmases would be spent here, and during the summer, we would go visit all of our family in Spain for as long as Dad could get off at a time. When here a few years ago, I got to watch the X-Factor UK, and I immediately became a One Direction fan. Like, made sure I watched every episode and voted every way I could. It was a bit crazy. My sisters always made fun of me for it. It was my secret fan girl obsession. You know, like, every teenage girl has?”

He was smiling. “I wasn’t aware of that, but I’m flattered. You acted so sane when we met.”

“I mean, I was a huge fan, but fans were the ones that made you sad,” I said. “And you’re a person, just like the rest of us.”

He smiled. “I’m glad you think that way. Have you met any other famous people, with your dad working at Capitol and all?”

I nodded. “Some.”

“Like who?”

“I met Justin Bieber once, and Selena Gomez a few times,” I began, crinkling my nose while I tried really hard to think. “Uh . . . I had a pretty nice conversation with Demi Lovato, a pretty strange one with Taylor Swift . . . um . . . I’ve hung out with Katy Perry quite a few times. She’s so nice and down to earth. Then there’s Shane Harper, Bridgit Mendler—one of the cutest couples ever, and also both very sweet people. That’s all that comes to mind at the moment, but I’ve probably met a few more.”

He laughed. “Wow. I’ve never met the last two, but I agree with what you said about the others. Katy's definitely awesome. She says I’m adorable and Irish.”

“Well you kinda are,” I reminded him.

He smiled. “Well thank you. Now, continue on. What else?”

“Let’s see . . . .”

Notes

The lyrics are from State of Grace by Taylor Swift. :)

It may take me a bit to get chapters up after this one. I've got some editing to do, and it's not gonna take ten minutes like the past few chapters have. No, this is a full scale, cleanse edit coming up in the chapters I have after this, so bear with me. :3

I'll try and get it done pretty fast, though. :)

Let me know what you think of this chapter. Hope you enjoy it. :D
