When the Leaves Begin to Fall

02. Ultimate Party Crashers

As more people started showing up, the party livened up. The music stayed awesome, and the dancing got hot. Some people, I didn’t know how I would look at them the same after seeing them dance, but after a bit, I got pulled out of the crowd quickly by a squealing Lucy.

My eyes were wide as she bounced around a little. “What is it?”

“One Direction has shown up at your party!” she squeaked, and she very quickly turned to point them out at the bar.

I felt my heart begin pounding in my chest. One Direction meant . . . Niall. Niall meant that sweet, adorable boy I met at my aunt’s wedding—his brother’s wedding—the one who cried when a bunch of screaming fans interrupted and “ruined” their wedding.

I found him crying in the bathroom, and I did what I could to make him feel better. He hugged me, thanked me, and we went back and enjoyed the reception. We talked a lot, and he’s a really great guy.

I sort of started crushing on him, pretty hard. We were going to exchange numbers, but neither of us had our phones, and we forgot to find a pen.

None of my friends knew who my aunt was. They didn’t know I had talked to him either. It seemed sort of like I was betraying him by telling them. I told him up front that I was a huge fan, and he appreciated that I was genuinely helping Niall, not Niall Horan of One Direction. He was sad and needed someone to talk to, someone outside of his family who didn’t know him or anything about him.

It was incredible, and I actually missed talking to him when we went our separate ways.

And now here he was, like fate was slapping me in the face. Maybe it was just rubbing it in that
I wanted what I could never have, my new uncle’s brother. I mean, what did that make him? My uncle? I mean, it wasn’t illegal. He had no idea I was Denise’s niece when we talked, and we didn’t grow up this way. So could I have him?

It doesn’t matter. Why would he ever want you?

I left a squealing Lucy behind and walked right up to him, something that surprised him so much he smiled. “Hi. You probably don’t remember me.”

“No, no,” he said, his eyes widened. “I do. You’re Oli.”

I nodded. “That’s me.”

“Uh, Harry, you remember me telling you about Oli, the girl from Greg’s wedding?” Niall asked, and his eyes drifted over to Harry Styles.

Harry smiled warmly over at me. “Ah yes! The wonderful fan who instead of attacking you helped you. Remembered you’re just a person. Hello, Oli. I’m Harry. It’s wonderful to be able to put a face with the name. Quite a beautiful name. Guess it fits since it goes with a beautiful face.”

I felt myself blushing a little. “Uh, thank you.”

Niall laughed. “What are the odds of us being at the same club at the same time?”

“Well, you’re actually crashing my birthday party,” I said, giving him a little smirk as I folded my arms over my chest.

He stuck his tongue out at me. “I’ll just leave then, since I’m just a boring old party crasher.”

“No, no, no,” I said quickly, laughing a little. “As old and boring as you are, stay, please. I’m glad you’re here. The odds, however, are very slim, but apparently, the odds are actually in my favor.”

“Maybe it’s fate,” he suggested, and the moment he did, I felt my heart jolt in my chest.

Holy. Freaking. Crap.

I smiled nervously while Harry nodded in agreement. “Maybe so.”

“Happy birthday, by the way,” he said, and he surprised me by carefully kissing my hand. “I hope it’s a wonderful one.”

“So far so good,” I said.

“Well, let’s keep it that way,” he decided, though he was still smiling. “Do you wanna dan—?”

“Oli, what the hell are you doing?” Mikey so very rudely interrupted Niall, something that surprised Niall, a lot. “Uh, I don’t know who you are, but this is my girlfriend.”

I let out a huff. “I’m talking to my friend, and it’s been ex-girlfriend for a long time now.”

“You really have a shitty choice in friends,” he said. “They should leave too.”

“Yeah, that’s not happening,” I snorted, and when he tried to grab my hand, I yanked it away.
“Look, you have no say over my life. Ever. You never really did. We dated, what? Two weeks? You’re an over jealous, overprotective, overly clingy asshole, and I’m past done with that. Leave me alone, Mikey. You know where the door is. Don’t hesitate to show yourself to it.”

“You don’t break up with me,” Mikey snapped.

Niall was laughing behind me. “No, lad. I think she already did.”

“What kind of stupid accent is that?” Mikey scoffed.

“A very sexy Irish one,” I snapped, and I grabbed Niall’s hand. It surprised him almost as much as it surprised Mikey. “Yes, Niall, I would love to dance.”

Niall very happily followed behind me on the way to the dance floor, and Harry was just laughing hysterically from his chair. It got Louis, Liam, and Zayn’s attention now, and they began immediately asking Harry who I was.

Niall put his arms around my waist with a half-hearted smile. “I would be glad to make him jealous, if you’d like.”

I shook my head. “No. I really don’t care if he’s jealous or not. I’m done caring about someone who cares more about their hair than they do me.” I let out a breath and began looking at my bare feet. “You probably don’t care.”

“On the contrary, I happen to care about you,” he disagreed. “You know, you came in the bathroom—the men’s bathroom—because you heard someone crying. You didn’t know it was me, but you came in there to help console me anyways. I could’ve been an old man, a little boy, someone crying because my dick’s too small. You didn’t know, but you came in to make me feel better. I wanna return the favor, but it’s a bit hard considering I know that I’m talking to a very beautiful girl.”

I began blushing while we continued to sway a little. “Uh—”

“There’s the birthday girl,” Jasmine, the red haired blue eyed wonder who probably single handedly took every guy I’d ever dated away from me, interrupted with a fake smile and fake surprise in her eyes. “We were just looking for you. I don’t think you’ve introduced us.”

“Yeah, Jasmine, you’re right,” I sighed. “Maybe I just wanna be happy with someone a few minutes before they meet you and you try and take them away. Um, I through with Mikey. You can have those leftovers.”

She laughed a little too loudly, which made Niall’s eyebrows raise. “Come on, dear, you know me better than that. I wouldn’t do that to you. So, are you going to introduce us?”

I sighed and shrugged my shoulders. “Niall, this is Jasmine. She clearly knows who you are and just wants to jump your bones.”

Niall nodded slowly and quirked his mouth to the side. “Uh, hi, Jasmine.”

“Don’t listen to her,” Jasmine said quickly, her eyes wide. “I would very much like to have a relationship with you.”

“Okay,” I muttered, and I began turning away. “Niall, come with me, if you want. This party may be a bit much for you.”

I knew he would follow as closely behind me as he could.

When we got back over to Harry, I was surprised to find him talking to Kayti. She was always one to be oblivious to things, so I think she literally had no idea who this was. Besides the fact that she wasn’t a One Direction fan and avoided anything One Direction related, she didn’t notice how all my Directioner friends were in the distance taking pictures, eagerly approaching them.

All she noticed was that she found a cute British guy with curly brown hair and beautiful green eyes. Literally her dream guy.

Niall’s eyebrows rose. “Well, hello there, lass. Who is this pretty girl?”

Kayti noticed me and looked to me with raised eyebrows. “Uh, you know them, Oli?”

“I know Niall a little,” I agreed. “I spoke to Harry for a bit.”

“Harry says you finally told that asshole how it is right to his face,” she said, and then, she began pouting. “I wish I had seen it. The way he described it made it sound pretty great.”

“I wanted to punch him,” Harry informed her. “And I don’t really even know you, Oli, but no woman should be treated that way.”

“I know,” Kayti sighed. “She just . . . puts up with what she thinks she deserves.”

That surprised Niall, to the point his eyes were a bit wide. “Oli . . . you deserve the best there is, not the piece of garbage standing across the room glaring at us. You deserve the world.”

Kayti smiled at him. “I like you. How did you say you two met again?”

Niall laughed and began looking at his feet. “Uh, we met at my brother’s wedding back in March. If I had my phone, we would’ve exchanged numbers and such.”

Her eyebrows furrowed. “March . . . wasn’t that your Aunt D’s wedding?”

When Niall looked up to me, I saw the same thing I had been thinking in his eyes. His brother, my new uncle . . . it kind of made this weird, didn’t it?

And every happy thought he seemed to be having just disappeared, right into thin air. Now, he looked rather unhappy, and it made me want to cry. Both in shame and sadness.

Kayti didn’t notice because she was too focused on Harry. “So, just curious. You sound like you’re from Europe. Are you guys vacationing in LA?”

Harry’s eyebrows rose, but his smile brightened even further. A girl who didn’t know One Direction? He could be Harry. I could tell by the way his eyes lit up at the idea of a girl who didn’t know his name.

“Uh, yeah, sort of,” he agreed. “We go back to London soon.”

“I’ve always wanted to go to London,” she informed him with a bright smile. “When I graduate, I’ve determined it’s my senior trip. Is it as beautiful as they say?”

“Incredible,” he whispered, but the way his eyes lit up even more made me smile. “How about we make a deal? You discreetly show me and the lads around LA tomorrow, and I’ll show you around London when you come.”

Her eyebrows furrowed. “That sounds nice. Why discreetly, though? You guys from, like, One Direction or something?”

That made Niall and I both laugh, which caught Kayti’s attention immediately. I think, for the moment, Niall forgot that I was, like, his niece-in-law, and was able to enjoy the night in my company.

“You want the truth?” I asked her with a smile.

Her eyes widened when she looked to Harry. “Really? Are you really?”

Harry smiled sheepishly and nodded. “Yes.”

“That’s not who I pictured singing those songs at all,” she said slowly, her eyes wide in surprise. “I thought you’d be these spoiled rich guys sleeping with every hot model you came across because you could. No offense.”

Harry’s eyebrows rose. “What gives you that idea?”

“I guess it’s the pop star stereotype,” she admitted, and she scrunched her nose a bit. “I do apologize. You’re nothing like I thought you’d be.”

“Well, that makes it better,” he offered, and she began to smile. “So do we have a deal?”

“We have a deal,” she agreed, and he surprised her by shaking her hand.

Right about that time, however, things started getting ugly. Aside from the fact that some very ugly people came our way, there was far too much drama.

Jasmine, Kat, and Mikey all came over in our area, drunk off their asses and barely able to stand up straight—at least Jasmine and Kat. Mikey was drunk, but he wasn’t wobbling.

Kat smiled and put her arm around Kayti. “Hi there. I’m so glad you’re here.”

Kayti pushed Kat’s arm off of her and scoffed. “Uh, yeah. I distinctly remember you telling me to leave when I walked through the door, so I’m not buying it.”

Mikey began trying to pull me away. “Let’s go, Oli. We need to get you home.”

I immediately pulled against him to get my arm out of his grip. “Ow! Mikey, let go of me. I’m not going anywhere with you.”

“How could you not tell us that you know Niall Horan?!” Jasmine exclaimed. “I thought we were friends.”

Niall surprised me when he stood up and punched Mikey right in the face. Mikey fell to the floor as if Niall had knocked his brains out, and I couldn’t stop the gasp of surprise that came out.
Harry, Louis, Liam, and Zayn, however, jumped to their feet, ready to defend Niall if necessary.

“You need to learn how to treat a woman, you ass wipe!” Niall yelled down at him. “She’s not your little slave! Stop treating her like one! She’s a wonderful person who deserves to be treated like a princess, not like a floor mat for you to walk all over!”

My eyes were wide as Niall looked back up at me, and before I could even process what my brain had me doing, I stepped over Mikey and kissed him. Right there. No thoughts about it at all. I just . . . did it.

When I pulled away, I very quickly covered my face with my hands and started to try and hurry away. “I’m so sorry. Holy crap. I don’t know what I just did. I’m gonna go play in traffic now.”

I heard Jasmine scoff. “Uh, no, Oli. You’re gonna get your stupid self back over there and apologize. That’s rude! Just because he’s hot and famous doesn’t mean you can kiss him.”

“You really need to just lay off,” Louis informed her with raised eyebrows. “They know each other. She’s not kissing him because he’s famous.”

Kayti started laughing the moment Niall punched Mikey, but her laughter only grew more devious as the drama unfolded. “I know the concept of actually liking someone you fuck is new for you, Jasmine, but she happens to like him. Very much.”

“That traffic idea sounds really nice,” I muttered. “I’m leaving.”

I shouldn’t have kissed him, but that’s the effect Niall seemed to have on me. Before I could see the disgusted look on his face, I bolted out the door and into the warm August night. Like always, the streets of LA were crazy busy. So many taxis driving around due to people’s excessive need to get drunk at random clubs, sleep with random people.

I hated it here, but with my dad being a huge music producer, we didn’t have much choice.

It didn’t surprise me when someone came after me, but who came after me did, in fact, surprise me.

“Wait, Oli,” Niall’s very sexy, very Irish voice said, and he sounded breathless. “I wanted you to do that because I wanted to know what it felt like, at least just once.”

I exhaled sharply and turned to face him with tears in my eyes. “When I said that I was Denise’s niece, you freaked out. This freaks you out, doesn’t it?”

He shook his head. “It’s not me, Oli. It’s everyone else. I hate that things are this way, but come on. You’re my niece, I think? By marriage anyways. People have tendencies to freak out about this kinda thing. I just . . . I wanted to know what it was like at least once.”

“I didn’t,” I whispered. “Not just once.”

“But it’s better than not knowing at all,” he offered, though it didn’t really help either of us feel better. When that didn’t work, he tried to cheer me up with an adorable smile.

Unfortunately, that worked, and I was able to smile a little at him. “That’s true.”

He surprised me by tilting my head up towards him. “If it’s any consolation, that was one of the best kisses of my life. Short, but it was nice.”

I nodded sheepishly and smiled a smile to match that. “I guess it’s some. Thank you for handling Mikey. Don’t worry about getting in any trouble. He would never admit that someone from One Direction knocked him down. He thinks you’re all gay.”

Niall rolled his eyes. “Everyone does, but a gay person wouldn’t be as attracted to you as I am. So I’m pretty sure that makes me not gay.”

I laughed and nodded. “I think being attracted to a woman takes you off the gay list.”

He was laughing now as he wrapped his arms around my body, and for a moment, I got lost in his hard muscles as he tightened his grip on me. I was so tiny, and he was quite fit.

“You know, we spent that entire day talking,” he murmured. “I got to know you pretty well, and I was really bummed out that we forgot to exchange numbers. You’re a great girl, Oli, and I’m sorry all we can ever be is friends.”

“I’m sorry, too,” I said, and I surprised myself when I hugged him pretty tightly back. It was like . . . the safest I had ever felt, and I didn’t want to let that go. In LA, my entire life was on edge. I mean, any day I could be walking the streets I walked all the time and get shot. Anything could happen, and I never felt safe.

Yet I did here, in his arms. The embrace was warm, and he smelled so good. I could feel my heart pounding against my ribcage, and honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if he felt it, too.

He released me with a sigh, and it literally felt like my heart sank all the way down to the tips of my toes. “We should get back in there before they start missing the birthday girl.”

I scoffed a little. “The only person in there who really even cares is Kayti, and she’s a bit preoccupied with Harry.”

That made him laugh. “I agree with that. Still, we should get in there. Let’s have fun tonight, forget all this sadness. Just have fun together, you know? And before we separate again, we have to exchange numbers.

I pulled out my phone and made a contact for him. When it was made, I held it out towards him with a slight smirk. “There you go.”

“This could get expensive,” he laughed.

I shook my head with a sheepish smile. “There’s this app called Tango. You can long distance text and call for free.”

His eyes widened. “Whoa! That’s so cool. I’ll definitely get that.”

I smiled as he handed me my phone back. It was one of those new Galaxy S4s that you could throw into water, soup, or whatever else without a case, and it was blue.

Made me very happy.

Like I figured, people smuggled in alcohol. Niall and I just had fun together. Mikey tried to get in again, but we just moved and ignored him. Kayti and Harry were close by while Louis, Zayn, and Liam all had fun with the girls they were already dating. So, even when my friends came in and asked for autographs and pictures, things of that nature, they signed the autographs but just had fun.

It was fantastic, and to my delight, Niall loved taking pictures with me. I got some with all five of them, some with Eleanor, Perrie, Sophia, Kayti, and me. I got some with Kayti, Harry, Niall, and me. Just all kinds of pictures to make sure I remembered how much fun I had partying with One Direction.

It may have been the lighting, but Eleanor didn’t seem to remember me . . . or maybe it was her attractive boyfriend she was dancing with all night.

People started clearing out somewhere around three. Zayn and Perrie left around one. Liam and Sophia left shortly after, but Louis and Eleanor didn’t leave until around two thirty. Everyone else was gone by three.

That literally left Harry, Niall, Kayti, the bartender, the DJ, and me. There was a cleanup crew coming in the morning, but I didn’t want to make them do it. It was my party, after all.

Niall started laughing when Harry slipped on a puddle that someone spilt in the floor, and Kayti very drunkenly rushed over to try and help him up. It made me laugh because she tripped over him, and the two just sat in the floor pouting.

We were so drunk that I think everything was funny.

Harry suddenly jumped to his feet and gasped. “Niall! I just realized that I have no idea where they’re staying! We have the SUV, but we don’t know where they are. Or where we’re supposed to be.”

I laughed a little. “Well, you two don’t need to be driving anywhere.”

Harry’s eyebrows furrowed. “That’s true.”

“Look, this may sound weird, but I’m being totally helpful here,” Kayti said, and she stood up so she didn’t feel awkward in the floor. “If you wanna wait until you’re sober to try and figure all this out, I have a couple extra bedrooms you could crash in. Or, if you feel more comfortable, so does Oli.”

“No, no, no,” Harry said. “That’s very helpful because I don’t think I wanna call any of those three right now, if you catch my drift.”

She giggled a little and nodded. “I understand completely.”

“You sure this is okay?” Niall asked, his smile brightening a little as he looked to me. “Are you gonna be there?”

Kayti’s eyebrows rose as she goofily smiled at me, and I couldn’t help but laugh at her expression. “I guess that I am. I’ll let my dad know I went to crash at your place.”

“He’ll love that very much,” she reminded me, and I knew she was right.

He definitely would love that very much.

Notes

The lyrics are from M.F.P.O.T.Y. by Cher Lloyd. Not my favorite off her new album, but it's catchy. :)

Hope you guys enjoyed! This is the last chapter I'm posting until you guys tell me you want more of this or His Princess. I'm leaving it completely up to you! :)

I'll post them both eventually, but as I've said, I don't want three stories going at once. :P

So lemme know what you think. :)
