When the Leaves Begin to Fall

10. Annoying Attachment

The next morning, I woke up with a smile on my face. I was going on a date, and I knew this date would be a real date. He would treat me right, like a princess. I wouldn’t have to pay for myself. It wouldn’t be more like two friends hanging out. This was a date, and Niall was going to make it a magical one.

When I woke up, I was careful not to wake anyone up, even as I got a nice long shower to prepare for the night. It was Saturday, after all, so Greg and Denise didn’t have to work. Theo was nice and asleep, after sleeping all through the night, and Niall was unconscious on the couch.

Poor boy.

Very carefully, once I showered and put my pajamas back on, I stepped out of the house to take in the beautiful morning. It was September in Mullingar, and fall was in the air. Not quite here yet, but I could smell the crisp fall air in the wind. The temperature still felt more like summer, but it was a sign—besides the date—that fall was imminent.

I knew Kayti would want to know that he knew, so on the way to the mailbox, I called her. The paper was at the end of the driveway, beside the mailbox, so that was where I was headed. It didn’t concern me, but I had noticed Greg liked to read it a bit.

It wasn’t surprising to find Niall on the front page. “Hometown Star Returns to Mullingar, Resting Up After Another World Tour!” I was smiling, but I didn’t really read it because my phone was calling Kayti.

She answered almost immediately. “It’s about time you called me! I thought you might’ve died or something! How are you?”

“I’m absolutely wonderful,” I said, and I couldn’t help but smile. “He showed up day three, and the more we’ve been together, the more things just worked themselves out. So, he found out last night. I’ll tell you the story when I get home. It didn’t go as planned, though I guess I didn’t really have a plan. I think he’s gonna call and tell the guys today, but don’t say anything yet?”

“Wait, how does he know it’s his?” she asked.

“He said it’s his whether it is or not,” I said, and I knew she would love hearing that. “It’s better for all three of us if that’s what we go by.”

“Aww!” she squealed. “See? I told you! What about you two? What are you?”

“We’re going out tonight to see,” I said, but I knew Kayti well enough to know she wouldn’t believe me.

She laughed. “Uh huh. You just wanna go out on a date. You know what you are.”

“I’ll tell you the story when I get home, but when he asked, it was so cute,” I sighed, and my lips were stuck in a smile right now. “He asked me to be his.”

She snorted. “It seems to me like you already are.”

I made a face. “I don’t know. I don’t wanna get too carried away. Things need to go slowly and carefully.”

“You have a baby on the way,” she snorted. “Things need to go whatever pace they want. Fast or slow, let it flow how it flows. If you get married in two weeks, so be it!”

“Now you’re just being ridiculous,” I scoffed, but when I heard someone clear their throat behind me, I turned away from the house to see a really gorgeous red haired girl with beautiful water blue eyes standing there, her eyebrows raised and her lips pressed together. “I’ll talk to you later, Kayti. I gotta go.” Before she could respond, I hung up the phone and furrowed my eyebrows. “Uh, yes?”

“What are you doing here?” she asked, her tone rather snooty. “Especially dressed like that. Stealing the paper so you can say you have Niall Horan’s paper? That’s pretty pathetic.”

I snorted. “Yeah, right. I’m not some obsessed fan. I’m dressed in my pajamas because I just came outside to get the paper for Greg. What exactly are you doing?”

“Greg and Denise are expecting me,” she said, and she smirked as my eyebrows rose. “I’m here to see Theo.”

“Um, I’m thinking you should come back later,” I said, and despite how hard I was trying, I was surprised I was able to talk nicely to her. “Everyone’s asleep.”

She scoffed. “You’re just saying that because you think I’m here to see Niall.”

“No, I’m saying that because everyone really is asleep,” I said. “Including Niall. He’s unconscious.”

Now, she just looked pissed. “Uh huh. I seriously doubt you’ve even been in the house. You’re just saying this so I’ll go.”

My eyes widened a bit. “Okay. You’re ridiculous. I’m going back inside now. You can just stay here.”

“I’m coming to see Theo!” she exclaimed.

“Stop acting all crazy,” I said, and my eyes widened a little again. “Good grief. He’s asleep. Come back later. Literally every person in there is asleep.”

She shoved past me and began snootily walking towards the door. Honestly, the way she walked was enough to make me want to punch her. She walked with one hand curled in that prissy way, and her hips swayed so much that I’m surprised she didn’t throw one out.

And it must be really painful to have to arch her back all the time so that her chest was poking out more.

She began knocking loudly before I could stop her, and when I got to the door, I shoved past her and walked in. She tried to follow me, but I stopped her before she could.

“Okay, I’ll go get Denise,” I snapped. “Stop being loud. Everyone’s asleep. You’re gonna wake up Theo, and then I’m gonna hurt you. Back up.”

I barely got her to do it, but she did it with a snort and a roll of her eyes. She kept calling me a crazed fan, but when I shut the door in her face and turned around, I found a very sleepy Denise standing behind me.

I frowned at her. “There’s a crazy person outside. I went to get the paper, and she went nutso on me. Started telling me I was stealing the paper to try and say I had Niall’s paper. Then she tried to tell me I couldn’t come in because I’m just a crazy stalker fan. She’s the crazy one!”

Her eyebrows furrowed. “What does she look like?”

“Red hair, blue eyes, unfairly pretty,” I grumbled.

She laughed. “That’s the neighbor’s daughter. She watches Theo on the rare occasions Aiofe can’t, and she’ll watch him later on when we go out.” She very carefully opened the door. “Hi, Erin, sweetie. Um, I thought Greg told you we wouldn’t need you for at least two weeks?”

“Oh, he did, Mrs. Horan,” the girl said in a sickly sweet tone. “I just miss Theo and wanted to stop by to see him.”

“Well, sweetheart, come back around one, and you can come see him,” she assured her. “Everyone’s still asleep.”

“I can wait,” she offered very annoyingly, which only made me roll my eyes. “I could make breakfast for you.”

“I was actually gonna sleep ‘til noon myself,” Denise informed her. “Just come back, please?”

She sighed. “Alright, Mrs. Horan. I’ll be back around one.”

Denise closed the door after telling her goodbye, and when she saw my face, she laughed. “What? She’s a sweet girl.”

“That is not sweet,” I said, and I handed her the paper very stiffly. “That’s evil wrapped up in crazy. She’s not here to see Theo.”

“Oh, I’m aware,” she informed me, and she began smirking. “I’m also aware that’s probably
what’s stirring up so much hate.”

“No, no, no,” I said, and I frowned again. “She started it. She’s mean. I was getting the paper talking to a friend. She was rude from the start. I tried being nice. I don’t care if she’s here to see Niall. Why would I?”

She laughed. “Oh, I don’t know. It’s not like he’s the father of your child or anything.”

I made a face. “So? He has girls approach him all the time. I really don’t care. I just don’t like her. I’m leaving when she comes back.”

“And where do you plan to go?”

I pressed my lips together. “Um . . . Spain?”

She snorted. “Alright. See you in a few days.”

“Fine, I won’t go to Spain, but I don’t wanna be here,” I whined, knowing damn well I was just being a whiny butt. I was mostly playing, and Denise knew that.

She smirked. “Well, if you’re not here, that leaves no one to stop her from obsessing over Niall.”

Niall very sleepily trudged into the entrance room right about then, dressed in nothing but his shorts, and he rubbed his eyes. “What’s all the commotion?”

“Oli’s being jealous, and Theo’s babysitter stopped by,” Denise answered, before I could.

I snorted. “I’m not jealous. She’s crazy and mean. Bad combo. She reminds me of the other two girls I know with red hair and blue eyes. One always dated my exes, and the other . . . well, she’s one of the ones from court.”

Denise made a face. “Fine. So you have a bad history with girls with red hair and blue eyes. Just give her another shot? You just got off on a bad foot.”

“Only if she’s nice,” I disagreed, and I stuck my tongue out at her.

She laughed. “You can’t say you’re not jealous at all, though. When she was trying to get in here to see Niall while Theo’s asleep, you looked like you would blow up.”

“I don’t like her!” I insisted.

“You called her unfairly pretty,” she pointed out. “That’s a form of jealousy.”

“I was stating the facts,” I said. “I don’t wanna look like her.”

She sighed. “But you’re insecure.”

“Don’t know what for,” Niall mumbled.

The room was dead silent for about three seconds. When a sleepy Niall understood what had just happened, we all three busted out laughing and forgot all about whatever the hell her name was.

It was just a wonderful moment.
*** Like she promised, she was back—right at one. Greg and Denise cooked, and Niall and I played with Theo. Denise made a comment about how she couldn’t wait ‘til we left so she could have her baby back, though we knew she was kidding.

Then, as I said, the girl came back—Erin, I think Denise said her name was.

She came in acting all surprised and star struck to see Niall. “Whoa! Niall? I had no idea you were here!”

Uh huh. Lying little bitch.

Theo, unfortunately, fell asleep shortly after she got there, so when Niall sat down to watch what was on the TV, she sat as close to him as she could get without making him downright uncomfortable.

The sucky part was, he sat by the arm of the couch so that only I could sit beside him. That plan backfired when she practically pushed me down to get beside him.

Instead of sitting beside her, I very tightly smiled and walked over to the fridge. Out of nowhere, I suddenly wanted some pickles.

Niall watched with a cocked eyebrow as I began pulling pickles out of the jar and eating them like chips. Erin noticed when she saw his gaze wasn’t on her, and when she did, she snorted.

“That’s disgusting,” she said. “Who does that?”

Niall shrugged and stood up from the couch. “I like pickles. Save some for me?”

I stuck my tongue out at him and laughed. “Nope. All mine.”

When he got in front of me, he wiggled his eyebrows a bit. I don’t think he really expected me to understand, but I did. He was asking if this was pregnancy related, so I answered his question with a nod.

Denise walked in right about the time I started drinking pickle juice, and she looked nauseas. “Oli, only you.”

Greg was laughing behind her. “Dude, that’s mine. I love drinking that.”

Niall laughed. “We used to always race to be the person to get the last pickle so we could drink the juice, so we would make ourselves so sick on pickles that we couldn’t even stomach the juice. Dad would always throw it out, wondering how we managed to go through the pickles so fast.”

That made me smile. “Wow. I never really liked pickles when I was little. If it had pickles in it, I wouldn’t eat it. Then, I don’t know. I was dared to eat a pickle once at a party and ended up loving them.”

Erin was glaring at me from the couch, and I just smiled sweetly over at her and popped the last pickle in my mouth. They were the yummy ones, the dill pickle chip pickles. Those were the best.

Those were the ones I wanted right now, and we ate them all.

Greg took the jar away from Niall and me and started drinking the juice himself. “You ate all my pickles. I get all the juice.”

Niall laughed. “That’s not the rule! The rule is the person to eat the last pickle gets all the juice!”

“Well I paid for these pickles, so they’re mine!” Greg exclaimed, and he tucked the jar in his arms and carefully began waddling towards the back.

We were both laughing so hard that we could barely breathe, much less chase after him to argue about it. If he wanted the juice that bad, he could have it.

Just a minute later, he came walking back in with the jar still tucked in his arms but his head hanging low. “I have to drink it in here. She won’t let me drink it back there.”

Niall helped me get off the counter and patted Greg on the shoulder. “It’s all yours, brother. You earned it.”

He grinned and began chugging it immediately. I no longer wanted any and began dancing in circles into the living room.

For some odd reason, I was just in a really great mood.

Niall caught me when my spinning nearly landed me on my ass, and he was laughing when I
sheepishly looked up at him. “Come on, clumsy. Spinning doesn’t exactly give you more grace.”

I stuck my tongue out at him and stepped carefully out of his arms. I didn’t really want to, but I had to pee. “Well, thank you for your concern. Now, I have to pee.” And I made a mad dash out of the room.

I hated leaving Niall alone with her, but Greg was close by. He could smack her if she got inappropriate.

That was really interesting to imagine.
