When the Leaves Begin to Fall

09. Dropping the Bomb

By the time we got home, Greg was home as well, so the two of them were in the kitchen working together to get dinner fixed. It was surprising, but it was also refreshing.

There really were more couples out there like my parents.

Denise smiled at me while Niall carefully took the still unconscious Theo back to his bedroom. “Hey, you two. Did you have fun?”

I nodded and walked over to climb onto a barstool, loving the smell of whatever they were cooking. I didn’t recognize it, but it had to be good.

And I was starving.

“Yeah. Bobby and Aiofe are amazing.”

“I know,” she agreed. “They love Theo so much. I never have to worry about having no babysitter. Aiofe will be here in a flash if I ever needed her.”

I laughed. “Oh yeah. She loves him.”

Niall came back into the kitchen and looked to Greg with furrowed eyebrows. “Do you have any kind of medicine for, like, nausea?”

Greg frowned. “Um . . . I’m not sure. Why? You not feeling good?”

“Oh, I’m fine,” Niall said, and he climbed onto the barstool directly beside me. “Oli was sick earlier.”

Denise’s eyes immediately cut over to connect with mine, and when they did, I made sure to keep my eyes anywhere else. She must’ve realized there was something was going on that she didn’t know about.

Greg, however, didn’t catch the drift that Niall didn’t know, and he actually laughed. “That happens with pregnancy.”

In that instant, the only sounds you could hear were the sounds of the meat Greg was browning as the grease popped and fizzled. Greg was oblivious and just continued stirring the meat, but Denise wasn’t as oblivious as her husband. She stopped mashing the potatoes and began looking between Niall and me.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw what about his face she kept looking at. His eyes were wide as he just stopped breathing, palms pressed against the bar. He looked utterly freaked, which wouldn’t make sense if there wasn’t something going on.

Denise was better at piecing stuff together than Dad gave her credit for. He used to joke and say she was oblivious, but she didn’t seem so oblivious now. By the way Niall was freaking out, now breathing though it was more like hyperventilating, she was able to piece things together.

She stepped back away from the mashed potatoes and gasped. “Uh, Oli?”

It shouldn’t have surprised me as much as it did that she figured it out. She knew us both really well, and she wasn’t stupid. Niall didn’t know I wasn’t pregnant. I purposely hadn’t told him yet.

Hmm.

Greg looked up then and furrowed his eyebrows at Niall. “Are you okay, bro?”

Niall let out a breath. “I, uh, need to step outside.”

He actually jumped out of his barstool so quickly that it didn’t stay standing. Instead, it
landed on the ground with a loud CRACK that both hurt my ears and scared the hell out of me. Niall barely even turned back to make sure it hadn’t hit me or anything before he rushed right back out the front door.

Why did he always do that? It wasn’t like he could run away from his problems.

I groaned and let my head smack against the counter. It was a terrible idea, but at least it gave me something to distract myself from the chaos going on inside of me . . . and around me.

Denise’s eyes were still wide when I sat back up. “Care to explain?”

“Not really,” I muttered, and I looked down to my twiddling thumbs. “But I have the feeling you’re not gonna stop anyways.”

“She’s persistent,” Greg agreed, but he wasn’t so oblivious anymore as a frown pulled across his lips. “I’m curious myself. What’s going on that we’re missing?”

“Nothing,” I said, and it was true. Niall and I weren’t dating. Nothing was currently going on that they weren’t aware of.

I heard the front door open, but I hadn’t actually expected Niall to be mad. I mean, obviously it made sense, but I wasn’t really expecting it.

But he was mad.

“You couldn’t have take two minutes to just tell me?” he asked, a scoff falling out of his mouth as I slowly turned to face him. “Now we have to tell them!”

I rolled my eyes and slid out of the stool, mostly so I could argue with him on the proper level. “It’s not like it’s exactly an easy thing to do! I figured you’d freak out or something.”

He snorted. “Why would I freak out?”

“Because I’m almost positive it’s yours.”

Denise let out a very loud squeak before clamping her hands over her mouth, and in any other instance, I would’ve laughed at her excitement. That’s exactly what she was, in an instant, so excited that I could hear her jumping around.

Greg, however, was too shocked to be excited. “Whoa, what?!”

Niall took a deep breath and looked to his brother. “Remember when I called you a month or so ago freaking out because I got drunk and wasn’t exactly smart about losing my virginity?”

The shock had worn off a little, and Greg was able to laugh at the hilarity of the situation—at least the hilarity we would all agree on five or so years from now. “Wow. So, wait, why do you think it’s his?”

I grimaced. “I mean, they said it was possible and highly unlikely, but he, uh—”

“I got it,” he interrupted, and I was beyond grateful I didn’t have to say it out-loud.

Mikey hadn’t used a condom, nor did he just cum inside of me. For risk of having a kid, he pulled out and decided to cum all over my face. Of course it made me vomit, and I would never be able to handle that kind of thing again, but either way, he hadn’t actually came inside of me.

Though possible, it’s highly unlikely that it was his.

“Look, Oli, I needed to know that,” Niall said, and I felt his fingers delicately push my chin up so that I was looking directly at him—not that I minded looking right at that face. “Yeah, I would’ve freaked out a little. I mean, it’s not exactly great timing, but it’s my kid. It’s something we both participated in, not just you. I’m not gonna just leave you to take care of it. What kinda person would I be if I did?”

“A typical one,” I admitted. “But you’re not exactly typical.”

Despite everything, he actually smiled. “Neither are you.”

“See?” I heard Denise whisper behind us. “I told you there was something going on between those two. You said I was crazy.”

“It seemed like wishful thinking,” Greg insisted. “You’ve always said Niall and Oli would go nicely together.”

Niall looked back to the two with wide eyes. “Whoa, what?”

Denise smiled sheepishly. “I kinda thought that from the day I met you, Niall. I actually told Greg when he was taking me home that you’d be a great match for my niece.”

I knew I was blushing. “She told me that a while back, but you can imagine I figured she was just saying that to make me happy.”

Niall laughed a bit and nodded. “I can. Uh, I guess we’ll be right back. I’m gonna go talk to Oli in her room.”

“Uh huh,” Greg winked, smirking as my eyes began to widen. “Be good, you two.”

I flipped him off, which only made him start to laugh as well. “Screw you.”

He shook his head and pointed at his brother. “No. Screw him.”

If Denise hadn’t playfully hit him, I would’ve groaned, but she did, so instead, I stuck my tongue out at him and let Niall lead me back to the bedroom.

He plopped down on the bed with a sigh. “This is . . . unexpected. I really wish you had told me in private, though.”

I quirked my lips to the side. “I mean, if it helps, I planned to tell you tonight. I was gonna tell you on the ride home, but I got distracted.”

“Oli, how are we gonna do this?” he asked. “I have a contract. I have to stay in One Direction for at least three more years, and I can’t imagine letting my mistake ruin their lives, too.”

“Niall, I don’t expect you to quit One Direction,” I insisted, and I immediately sat down next to him so that I could look him in the eyes. “I just . . . I just wanna know that you’ll be here for me. That’s all. I don’t mean be here, like, every minute of every day, or even every day for that matter. I just wanna know that you’ll stand behind me and help me.”

“I’ll do whatever I can for you,” he promised, and he surprised me when he leaned over and kissed my forehead. “This isn’t your burden to bear alone, Oli. Honestly, I’m glad it’s mine.”

“Well, I mean, I’m not certain,” I admitted.

He shook his head. “No. I don’t care. It’s mine, whether it really is or not. I don’t have to know. I’m gonna say it is because that’s the best thing for all three of us—for it to be mine.”

I knew I was smiling when I hugged him because he was right. Every way I looked at it, this baby was better off being Niall’s. So, to just not know for sure was the best thing for all of us. That way, I never had to tell my kid that it was the product of rape.

It was the product of a deep connection, of two people making love to each other. The product of love.

Niall sighed and laid back on the bed. “It doesn’t make it any easier, though.”

“I know,” I murmured. “It’s gonna be a lot harder for you than it is me. I’ve gotta tell my parents that it’s not Mikey’s. That’s about it. Things really can’t get worse at school.”

He grimaced. “I’ve gotta tell the guys. And management. And the world.”

The way he said that made me smile, but I scrunched my nose at him to tease him a bit. “Meh. Doesn’t seem too bad.”

He let out a soft laugh. “Yeah. No biggie.” Not even a full second after he got the words out, he sat right up and looked directly into my eyes. “You know, Oli, this kinda nulls and voids everything I stupidly said.”

My eyebrows furrowed. “What do you mean?”

He smiled. “It doesn’t really matter what people think anymore. We’re having a baby, and I want nothing more than to be with you anyways. I always have, since the day we met. Now, this just kinda feels like fate slapping me in the face saying, ‘Hey, dumbass, third time’s the charm?’”

I laughed and nodded. “I guess you could look at it that way, but are you sure this isn’t just the baby?”

“This sounds kinda morbid and depressing, but I mean, you could still lose it,” he mumbled, and he was right. Definitely morbid. “But even if you did, or even if you weren’t pregnant . . . I’d probably still be saying the same thing I am now. I wanna be with you, Oli. There were times over this past month that I literally just sat there, too scared that I couldn’t do anything. I was so scared to lose you, and I laid there wondering why on earth I was so scared to lose you when you’re not even mine. I called Greg freaking out. I had unprotected sex with a girl I really and truly cared about, a girl I very stupidly told that I couldn’t be with her. I made a mistake, and I didn’t know how to fix it. Seeing you here . . . I realized I could. Then panicked a bit because I had no idea why you were here. Then I found out, and the shit hit the fan. But mostly, I’m just saying that . . . no matter what, Oli, I wanna be with you. This just makes it easier to do.”

My eyebrows furrowed, but I laughed anyways. “Not exactly, but I get your point.”

He took a deep breath and placed one hand delicately on my knee. “So, what do you think? Wanna be mine?”

I was immediately overwhelmed by the cute factor of his question. Holy crap was that adorable. Something about him asking me that way, asking me to be his instead of his girlfriend . . . it was cute to me.

But as cute as it was, I wanted something first. He kind of owed me, right? I mean, he did break my heart after knocking me up, so he owed me.

Though my heart was fluttering and I wore a huge smile, I managed to make my request. “Well, maybe. First, you gotta take me out.”

I didn’t think he would like that too much, but he suddenly had a smile as big as mine. He took one of my hands in his and kissed it with such tenderness, an intimacy I had never known. “Okay, beautiful. Tomorrow night, you and I will go out. I’ll treat you to a proper date. I’ll ask again when it’s all over, see if you’ve decided.”

I smiled. “Sounds like a plan to me.”

There was a soft knock on the other side of the door that Niall didn’t look too thrilled about. Still, with a sigh, Niall stood from the bed and opened the door.

A very sheepish Denise stood there. “Sorry! I know you guys are busy talking about important things and all, but I was just gonna let you know that dinner is ready when you are.”

I stood from the bed and nodded. “Thank you. We were actually just finishing up.”

I don’t think she was expecting such an important conversation to be finished so quickly, but she was too curious and excited to really think too much about how strange it was. “So, come on. Tell me! What are you guys gonna do?”

“Well, first, I have some people I need to talk to about it,” Niall said. “I wanna scream it to the world, but they probably wanna wait until she’s a bit further along to make sure everything goes okay.”

I nodded. “It’d probably be bad to tell everyone and it only end badly.”

Niall didn’t like my wording, but he knew that was right. “Sounds about right. Nevertheless, this is my baby, and I’d be damned if I ignored the facts and made her go through this alone. I’m gonna take care of them both.”

Denise immediately started squealing, but she took a deep breath to compose herself after just a second. “So, were you ever gonna tell me, Oli?”

“I had to tell Niall first,” I admitted. “I mean, I knew you would freak out. Literally no one but the four of us know. Well . . . aside from my best friend, Kayti.”

Niall’s eyes were wide. “She kept this a secret too?”

“I didn’t tell her to, but this she said was definitely not her place to tell,” I said.

And once again, he couldn’t argue that.

Notes

The lyrics are from Powerless by Linkin Park. I first heard this song at the beginning of the credits of Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter. If you haven't seen that movie, I recommend it. It's just really good. <3

Anyways, hope you guys enjoy this chapter! I know it's been a while since I updated, and I'm sorry. I've had a very hideous version of this chapter done for months, but I finally just sat down and made myself edit it where I was willing to let you guys read it. Still not sure how I feel about it, but hopefully you guys will enjoy. :)

Idk about you, but I think Niall is adorable. <3
