Chapter 26

Harry

She was angry, bothered. Maybe it was something the young boy said, I’ve never seen him clearly he had gotten comfortable with Marilynn. I see him kick a rock in anger as he storms inside the school. I get out of my car sighing out loud. I walk slowly to the school not feeling the need to work.

“Hello Harry.” A group of girls smiled at me.

“Hello young ladies.” I chuckled lightly leaving their hearts racing.

I enter the building with my side bag holding all my documents. I spot Mary from a far her feelings look hurt. I got all her calls and texts but I never answered, I couldn’t without my girl friend getting suspicious of me. Why was she sad? Should I talk to her? No that’s probably the last thing she wants. Marilynn appears different; I don’t know she seems more depressed.

I walk the other way avoiding her. I need to chat with Marissa, I walk inside her classroom and she immediately looks happy to see me. “Harry! Where on earth have you been? I’ve stuck doing all this paperwork.” She playfully glared at me. “I had a few compromises, I visited my father and a family friend came to see me. I’ve had a hectic month.” I rubbed my temples. “I’m glad to be back so what’s been going on at this place?” I leaned against a student desk crossing my arms.

“We have new students and there’s a new coffee machine in the lounge.” She shrugged. “And the students of last class? How are they?” I asked not trying to make it obvious whom I actually wanted to ask about. “They’re all okay. My student Nathan has been acting up and ditching class. Mary kept making up excuses for him but after a few days, I wasn’t buying it.” She took a sip of her coffee.

“How is Mary? Now that I come to think of her.” I said nonchalantly

“She became friends with a new student of mine, his name is Ashton. He made her extremely happy; Mary would laugh more often however I think once they started going out as the kids say it, she slowly became more depressed. Ah high school drama.” She shook her head.

“I got out and then got back in.” I joked making her laugh. “So have you decided to go back to University?” She eyed me.

“No, thank you for giving me this job though, I’m honestly grateful but I’m starting to think that the kids aren’t believing that this is for the college credit crap.” I ran a hand through my hair. “Listen honey, you need to go back to Uni, as much as I love having you work with me you need to get your life together.” Marissa advised.

“I know, I know, anyway do you got any work for me?” I asked, changing the subject.

“Yes, tons of it actually.” Marissa went over to her desk to take out more folders out of her drawer. “Shit, Marissa.” I groaned.

“Grade each one that follows the rubric then enter them into the grade book, after you’re done entering the grades into grade book, enter them into the computer. From there you have to make copies of these worksheets.” She gave me a stack of worksheets. “Confirm that each student turned in their assignments by checking them off.” She then added.

“What the hell will you being doing?” I furrowed my brows.

“My hands are full with Art Gallery that I will be hosting. I have two hundred students, I need to figure out a time for each one so they can show their work then I need to divide it by how many show nights, I also need to contact a few successful artists to speak with the children and convince the parents that the art program isn’t a waste of money.” She rambled.

“Oh.” I looked the other way.

“Yeah and on top of that I have to think of the food preparations, hire staff to serve the food, and search for decorations.” She continued.

“Marissa, chill!” I shouted.

“Marissa!” A girl’s voice followed mine as it echoed through the room. I turned my head to view who was the screaming girl when my eyes froze on Marilynn’s. She held my gaze; she blinked a few times before turning her direction to Marissa not even bothering to acknowledge me.

“What’s up, Marry Berry?” Marissa asked her.

“My head fucking hurts like shit and that stupid ass nurse won’t give me a mother fucking pill for my damn headache!” She complained.

“Calm down, dear. Take a seat, I might have some in my purse.” She rushed over to her bag. Marissa took out a pill bottle labeled Headache Relief and gave one to Mary. “Look whose back.” Marissa grinned at Mary, but Mary only glared at me.

“Thank you, Marissa. I better get to my first lesson.” She hugged her teacher good-bye, leaving without giving me a single word.
