03. Breaking Reality

Light burned my irises as the sound of the AC kicking on stirred me from not only wonderful sleep, but also a wonderful dream . . . the best dream of my existence. It was the best, but it was also the worst.

Facing reality at this point would absolutely crush my heart.

That wasn’t real.

I took another minute to adjust to the sunlight shining through the windows onto my face, but it was a bit hard. The sun was so bright.

Eventually, however, I would have to face my grim reality and glumly tell Sparrow about how incredible my dream was, as if talking about it would make it any better.

With a groan, I slid off of my bed in Sparrow’s house and began digging through my dresser. Due to the AC that just kicked on, I was pretty chilly, so I slipped into a pair of fuzzy pajamas and an oversized One Direction hoodie.

That didn’t make me feel any better, but that brief spell of happiness while I was dreaming was actually worth the misery and bitterness I felt right now.

Very sleepily, I began trudging my way downstairs and into the kitchen. I noticed a bunch of dishes in the sink, but Sparrow and I would clean those later, after I made us some breakfast.

When I opened the fridge, however, reality got even grimmer when I realized there was nothing there to cook. It shouldn’t have been surprising, and maybe it wasn’t, but that didn’t make me feel better.

Now I was sad and hungry.

The moment I closed the refrigerator door . . . a very unfamiliarly familiar laugh sounded out behind me, and my insides completely solidified. I couldn’t tell if it was because I was afraid or because I wasn’t. This laugh was too genuine and good for it to belong to someone bad.

“I’ve already got it out and made, Em.”

I stood there for a second, contemplating whether I should turn and run or simply turn. That Irish voice from behind me immediately put a lot of things in perspective for me. Despite being in a state of shock, my mind noticed the silliest things.

Here I was, looking like complete crap, and here was Niall Horan. Of One Direction. In Sparrow’s house, with breakfast.

Slowly, I decided to turn, and when I did, he wore a toothy grin as he very quickly put my reaction into perspective. “You didn’t believe that was real.”

“I told you I didn’t,” I reminded him.

“Well, yes, but I figured as the night went on, it started to sink in,” he said, letting out a light-hearted laugh. “You know, it’s a good thing Liam is responsible, or there would be some serious search parties out here looking for us. They might’ve started kicking doors down.”

My eyebrows furrowed. “So I think I missed the part where you guys just stayed.”

He shrugged. “It was late. We came here after the diner for a reason I’m not even sure of. I don’t know. We just sorta ended up crashing here.”

I nodded. “And you made breakfast?”

He was still smiling coyly as I began to eye the marvelous feast. Without much effort, Niall managed to solve both of my problems, and I still couldn’t really even believe it was real.
“I learned how to do it growing up, so it’s not a big deal. Seriously, though. Eat some. I made triple what I would want so there’s enough for everyone. Does that sound like enough?”

I shrugged. “I mean, depends on how much your four eat. Sparrow eats like a pigeon. It’s quite tragic, really.”

He pursed his lips and took only a few seconds to think about it before he decided he didn’t care and instead shrugged it off. “If they need more, they can make it. Not my problem.”

I slowly shook my head as I got a plate and made some for myself. “This is not real.”

“Eventually, you’ll have to accept that this is real,” he said. “Maybe in a couple days?”

“Maybe,” I agreed. “Alright. Say this is real. You guys just gonna disappear? Head away and never talk to us again?”

“Now, what kinda guy do you take me for?” he asked with a smug little smirk that made my heart begin to soar inside my ribcage—kinda turned me on a bit, too. “I do happen to be nice to people who supply me with lots of food and fun. Besides, we’ll be back to New York. It’s a marvelous place.”

Suddenly, Zayn came rushing down the stairs, dressed in his usual Zayn-like attire. It was more formal than casual, but it wasn’t suit formal. He looked like he was about to head out on a date, whereas Niall was just sitting here shirtless.

I cannot say that I had a problem with that.

Zayn came over and grabbed a couple of pieces of bacon. “Okay. Emmit, from a woman’s perspective, does this look okay?”

I couldn’t believe he was seriously asking me, but I kept a straight face and nodded. “You look good, Zayn.”

He looked at Niall. “You might want to put pants on.”

Niall shrugged. “Boxers are like pants, right?”

Zayn rolled his eyes and shook his head. “No. Niall, pants. Go.”

“I’m almost twenty-one years old,” Niall reminded him as he did exactly what Zayn was telling him. Seeing that boy running around Sparrow’s house in boxers and socks only turned me on even further than that smirk did. I couldn’t remember a time where that ever actually happened, but I mean, it was Niall Horan . . . cut me some slack.

Zayn smiled at me. “He’s a special kid. You’ll have to ignore his lack of pants.”

I shrugged. “It’s fine. It really doesn’t bother me.”

“You know, you guys really are different,” he said. “I mean, any fan would let us sleep in their house, but you guys didn’t bother us. You didn’t creepily watch us sleep, and you haven’t been . . . overbearing. You let us breathe, and it’s been fun hanging out with you two.”

“It’s definitely been fun hanging out with you five,” I agreed. “I mean, I don’t see a point in that. It’s just gonna freak you out and scare you away, so why be overbearing?”

“She doesn’t believe she’s awake,” Niall informed Zayn matter-of-factly as he reentered the room and immediately returned to his food.

Zayn laughed. “I didn’t believe I was when we first started getting big. Still sometimes don’t.”

Niall, still shirtless, had gone upstairs and put on a pair of sweats. I definitely loved the fact that he wanted to run around the house like this. You could tell he worked out because he had muscles, but he wasn’t ripped or overly buff. Actually, he was quite perfect, and I almost stared at him awkwardly.

Somehow, though, I managed to not stare at him and instead looked at my food. I started to eat when Zayn started talking again.

“So what time do you think your sister will be up? I’m supposed to meet Perrie around two.”

I nearly choked on my food as I looked to Niall, who was once again laughing at me. Finding him to be no help, I had to swallow hard to push the lump down before looking back at Zayn.
“Um . . . my memory of last night is a bit fuzzy.”

He laughed. “Well, we were all gonna go introduce ourselves to your sister and sign her CDs for her.”

My eyes widened. “Oh! Uh, well, I mean, she’s up now. She doesn’t really sleep like a normal human being.”

That made Niall grin as he nodded. “We’ll go as soon as the rest of the lads are up and ready.”

“Before I forget, can I have your number, Emmit?” Zayn asked. “You’re a really spectacular person, and I would hate to lose contact with you.”

“She actually thought we would just crash at their place and never speak to them again,” Niall informed him as I carefully made my way upstairs and into my room. I didn’t hear what they said after that because I was in a hurry.

I really needed a moment to freak out.

Dancing around, squealing into a pillow to muffle the sound, checking the mirror to make sure that “looking like crap” wasn’t as horrible as I imagined . . . it was worse, unfortunately, but I was able to bring up my spirits when I reminded myself that this wasn’t a dream.

I took a few breaths to calm myself and grabbed my Galaxy S5 out of my bag. Having enough time to be a teenage girl, I left back out of my room and brought my phone down to Zayn. As I reached the bottom of the stairs where he stood and started to unlock it, it started to ring. The call was from a number I didn’t recognize, and despite the fact that I didn’t want to answer it, I did anyways.

“Hello?”

“Hey!” a vaguely familiar voice spoke on the other end. I couldn’t put a voice with the face, so I just frowned. “I know this is probably really weird, but I met you last night at the coffee shop. Daniel. Remember?”

It was a bit fuzzy, but I remembered the guy I met last night. He had been blocked out of my memory because after meeting One Direction, some random guy at an ice cream shop is a bit less exciting.

He was cute, sure, but I collided with Niall Horan . . . enough said about that. Even if he had given me his number instead of Sparrow, meeting Niall Horan not even ten minutes later kinda wipes a random guy away from memory.

My eyes widened a little. “How do you have my number? I never texted you or anything.”

“You did last night,” he said. “I guess you deleted it, but you did. I wouldn’t have it otherwise. Look, this is crazy. I just know that I met a beautiful girl yesterday that seemed like someone I wanted to remember, so I was wondering if maybe you wanted to have dinner with me. I’m leaving town tonight, and I want to spend the last night right.”

“I’m not so sure about that,” I mumbled, and nervously, I began rubbing my hand across the back of my neck. “I mean, I don’t really know you, Daniel. I’m sorry I spilt your ice cream on you, but really. I, uh, don’t know.”

“Bring a friend,” he suggested. “That way you’re not alone, and if anything goes weird, you can just leave.”

“I’ll talk to her,” I finally decided. “She’s asleep. I’ll ask her when she wakes up.”

“That sounds great,” he agreed. “Just let me know something. Bye, Emmit.”

“Bye.” I quickly sat my phone down and just stared at it, my eyes blinking more than usual. “I cannot be awake. It’s not possible.”

Niall laughed. “This again?”

“Okay, my life has been relatively boring and ordinary,” I insisted, although that wasn’t entirely true. I just chose to make it that way. “Then, Sparrow and I are getting ice cream, and I run into this guy. Literally. Spilled his ice cream all over him. He’s a cool guy. He flew to New York with his little sister so she could see you guys. Then, Sparrow tazes Liam, we all hang out, and you end up here. Now, he’s calling me telling me he wants to spend his last night in the city with someone he wants to remember. And he’s talking about me . . . . This doesn’t just happen to me.”

Niall shrugged. “Apparently things are changing for you. You gonna go?”

“I’m not going alone,” I said. “That’s just . . . not smart. Someone’s gotta go with me. Sparrow is not gonna like this, but this is the first time it’s been me. Ever.”

“I’ll go,” Niall offered almost the second after I was done. It surprised Zayn enough that he looked at him with wide eyes and a curious stare. “I mean, we can say we’re friends, right? I’m a friend. I can make sure nothing gets weird.”

“Niall, that would be amazing, but you must have other things you want to do in New York City,” I said, but I had to admit, the idea of Niallcoming with me made me a bit hopeful.

Nothing bad could happen with Niall Horan there, right?

He shook his head. “I just wanna see the city. Look, if I do this for you, you can do something for me.”

I cocked an eyebrow at him. “What is that?”

“Show me the city,” he suggested. “Tomorrow.”

“Deal,” I agreed, without having to think twice about it. The way his cyan eyes lit up when I said this was beyond incredible, and I couldn’t help but notice my heart as it skipped a few beats.
Why shouldn’t it skip a few beats? Niall Horan wanted to spend more time with me.

This is not real life. It can’t be.
