His Princess

20. Skyping

I was in a lot of pain while I waited for the concert to end so I could talk to Niall. Every time this happened, he was always so worried until he got to talk to me again. Then, he was just pissed and upset, but at least he knew I was alright then.

For some reason, he thought I could die, but my uncle knew better than that. He knew that people were watching him, so if I mysteriously died, he was screwed . . . . Not to mention, he would have the wrath of my dad to face if he killed me.

While I waited, I began looking up videos of some of their previous concerts. Niall had mentioned that they decided to mix things up a bit and sing some covers of their choice, but the video I found just so happened to be Niall’s choice.

He chose Chains by Nick Jonas for the five of them to sing, and it was beyond incredible.
Depressing, but holy shit was it sexy. Niall had more solos than the rest of them, since it was his choice, and it felt like he was singing this to me as well.

The way he rotated his hips to the breakdown in the song, the way he danced and got so into it . . . there was no way it was a coincidence.

I was crying and couldn’t stop watching it. It gave me the feeling I couldn’t explain, like touching a bruise or ripping off a scab. The feeling it leaves on your skin is something that can’t be matched, and that’s what watching Niall sing this did. Painfully overtook me in a beautiful way.

There was nothing to do while I waited, so I took my shirt off and started checking out my bruised ribs in the mirror. Mika was way past asleep, so I wasn’t worried about her coming in.

The bruising wasn’t as bad as originally, so they were finally almost healed.

I hadn’t realized my computer was ringing until I stepped out of the bathroom and into my bedroom, and without thinking about it, I jumped over to my bed to answer it before I missed the call.

When his eyes widened, mine did too, but for entirely different reasons. He seemed to enjoy what he was seeing, but it just occurred to me what exactly that was . . . my shirtless self.
Admittedly, I had a bra on, but that didn’t really make it much better.

“Shit,” I breathed as I fell off the bed and scrambled over to pull my t-shirt back on. “Forget what you just saw.”

He let out a rather taunting laugh, low and under his breath, and it was muffled by a new desire in his voice. “Uh, nope. Can’t do that. Sorry, beautiful.”

I sighed as I crawled back in front of the camera. “I was bored, so I was checking on my ribs.”

“How are they?” he asked.

“They’re so much better,” I said, but as I started really looking at him, I noticed that his eyes were bloodshot, and a beer occupied his hand. “How are you?”

“Glad to see you still alive.”

“He won’t kill me, Niall,” I assured him. “He’s being watched as it is, and if I just mysteriously die, that’s bad.”

“No one seems to notice the strange injuries, though,” he mumbled.

I sighed again. “That’s because I hide it. I have to, for Mika. Did they question you quickly hanging up?”

He nodded. “I didn’t tell them, but they figured it out.”

“Fuck. That was bad timing. Maybe I should’ve told them sooner . . . .” I grimaced at the thought of them having a horrible concert because of me, disappointing the thousands of fans that paid good money to see them. I hated the thought of that.

He shrugged. “It went fine. We all managed to act normal and pretend we weren’t worried about you the whole time.”

“Are you sure that wasn’t just you?”

“Positive,” he said. “Harry and I both sat on the elevator, just riding it up and down. He and Liam are taking it the hardest, but that’s not to say Louis and Zayn aren’t taking this hard as well. It’s tearing everyone up.”

I heard a door opening, and Harry’s very sleepy voice quietly filled the background. Though I couldn’t understand him, I wanted to try and cheer him up. “Harry!”

“She’s alive!” Harry exclaimed, and suddenly, they were all rushing into the room and looking at me with wide eyes as they tried to all five crowd around and fit into the camera’s view. “Are you okay?!”

I glanced towards the door to make sure it was locked and then nodded. “Yeah. I’m fine.”

“Why didn’t you tell us?” Louis asked. “I thought we were friends.”

“We are, Louis,” I said. “But when I told Niall, it upset him so badly. I just didn’t want to do that to all of you. I felt bad enough about upsetting him.”

“Tell us these things,” Liam requested. “Upsetting or not, we want to know.”

Niall had a small smile on his lips as he leaned a little closer to the camera. “You weren’t expecting that, huh?”

I shook my head as a smile of my own began creeping out. “Not at all.”

When I looked at Harry, I noticed tears in his own eyes. Either that or it was just the camera, but it made me gasp in surprise. “Harry, are you crying?”

He looked right to the camera with a half-hearted smile. “No. I’m impersonating a water fountain.”

Despite the fact that I felt terrible about making him cry, that made me smile a little, and I just shook my head as I carefully threw my hair up in a ponytail.

He began getting really close to the camera with his eye wide. “You know, in all of this chaos, we haven’t really talked to Sparrow much. How is she?”

“She’s really quite mad at me,” I said, but as soon as I did, I began gnawing on my lip. The reason why, I really didn’t want to talk about, but now, they were going to get it out of me. “She’s good, though.”

“Why is she mad at you?” Niall asked, but his eyes were drifting to the bag of chips Louis had in his hand.

It was amusing to see, especially when he began licking his lips. “It’s not important.”

“Of course it is,” Harry disagreed. “Come on. No secrets with Niall. You must tell us all.”

I scowled. “But . . . she’s mad at me because . . . she thinks I’m being stupid. She’s not legitimately mad. We still talk and stuff, but she gets quite frustrated with me easily nowadays. Keeps trying to be right.”

“About what?”

Niall, thankfully, wasn’t even paying attention at this point. Louis was, but he was also moving the chips away and getting Niall to follow them like a little puppy. I was grateful for the hilarious distraction. I didn’t mind saying it with him not paying attention.

“Niall.”

He looked at me suddenly, eyebrows raised in question and a sheepish smile on his lips. “Yes?”

“She was just saying how Sparrow is mad at her because of her decisions with you,” Harry said, and I grimaced. “She’s trying to convince her to see her side of things. I’m guessing she’s on our side?”

“Is everyone against me?”

“Yes,” Liam said. “And you can’t say we don’t know why you’re doing it now because we do. Still, I think you’re overthinking things.”

I groaned. “The thing is, no one knows all of it—besides Mika—and I really can’t tell you right now. It’s . . . complicated, and I can’t explain it. I’m just . . . it’s not simple.”

“Life is simple,” Harry said. “We choose to make it complicated.”

Niall frowned. “I’m capable of changing her mind on my own, guys.”

“Yeah,” Zayn scoffed before rolling his eyes. “That’s working out really well for you.”

Niall started grumbling under his breath as he snatched the bag of chips from Louis, who didn’t seem to like that very much but probably knew better than to get upset about Niall taking food.
“I’m glad to know you have such strong confidence in me.”

“I have confidence in you,” I said in an attempt to cheer him up, and I even flashed him a sincere smile and gave him a thumb up.

He cocked an eyebrow at me. “Oh?”

“No. That’s not what I’m saying.”

“I’m painfully close,” he sighed.

“Mmhmm.”

“You’re being ridiculous,” he said. “If you know I’m gonna win, why not just let me win now?”

“Because the longer I hold it off, the longer I hold off the disaster,” I said, but even though it was a big deal, I tried to play it off as nothing.

Niall leaned closer to the camera as he began doing something strange with his hands, almost like he would squeeze someone’s throat if he could, and his eyes tightened. “You . . . can be very frustrating.”

I shrugged. “It’s part of it, dear. You’ll have to get used to it.”

He ate his first chip and sighed again. “I am used to it, but that doesn’t mean I’ll stop telling you.”

Harry began doing the eye thing to the camera again. “I don’t understand your logic, Em. Can you explain it to me?”

“Oh, it makes perfect sense in my head,” I assured him. “It’s quite simple. Happiness doesn’t ever stay in my life. Therefore, I can’t be too dependent on being happy. But, if I do decide to try this, I’ll become dependent on being happy because I’ll just be so damn happy, and then, when something goes tragically wrong, everything that’s made me smile in these past couple of weeks will be ruined. I’ll lose five people who mean so much to me, and it’s just . . . too risky.”

Niall frowned. “And here I thought it was just me you didn’t wanna lose.”

I wanted to say, you the most, but I didn’t want to offend anyone, so I just texted it to him. He understood too, and it made him smile, despite the fact that he hated hearing my logic.

Harry scowled. “That’s not nice. Texting him to tell him something? We feel like fish sandwiches.”

Niall perked up instantly, though, and we all started laughing, though I couldn’t do it as loudly as they were. “I want a sandwich.”

“Well, if you were here, I make a killer sandwich,” I informed him. “After all, isn’t that what I’m here for?”

That got them all laughing again, Niall included this time. Some girls get so offended and upset about those kinds of jokes, but they’re jokes. If a guy means it, fine. Slap him. I don’t care. But when they’re joking around, lighten up and joke with them.

And that was how I spent the rest of my night, talking to these five about my Niall problems. It was really easy to do, surprisingly, and they all gave me their opinions—I was overthinking things.

So, I went to sleep thinking about everything they said and also the date with Niall—the most incredible day of my life.

I wanted nothing more than to have every day of my life lived the same way, but was it possible?

Nothing’s impossible, Em.
