Happy Dreams

“It’s your special day,” Liv sang as she flew through the door. She took one glance at me before she ran right back out.

I was confused but I needed to get ready. It’s my special day! I’m getting married to Eric!

The door opened again and Liv flew back in. In her hands was a small box, no bigger than her palm. She stepped toward me and took my hand.

“Something old,” she said. She opened the box, away from me so that I couldn’t see inside it. She pulled out a brooch that looked at least a hundred years old. I recognized it as my great-great-grandmother’s brooch that sat in my mother’s jewelry box. Liv placed it in my hand.

“Something new,” she said. She pulled out brand new pearl earrings, which matched my necklace and bracelets. She put them in my hand with the brooch.

“Something borrowed,” she said. She pulled out her pearl ring. She found the pearl while we were scuba diving and she has kept it ever since and now she has turned it into a ring. She placed that in my hand as well.

“Something blue,” she said. She pulled out a blue clip. She placed it in my hand with the other gifts.

“Thank you,” I whispered as I pulled her into a hug.

“I expect the same on my wedding day,” she whispered back. We both laughed before turning back to the mirror. I slipped in the earrings and put on the ring. Liv secured the brooch in the middle of the flower at my hip…it really brought the dress together. Then she put the clip in my hair and everything fell into place.

“You are beautiful,” Liv whispered. We hugged one more time and suddenly the door opened.

My mother came in, took one look at me, and burst into tears. Liv rushed forward with a box of tissues. My mother blew her nose loudly before coming toward me.

“Mommy,” I sighed, “save the tears for the ceremony…remember?”

She chuckled and nodded. She wiped her eyes and then fixed my veil quickly.

“You are beautiful, baby,” she cooed. We hugged and then the door was opening again. This time it was my father telling us it’s time to go.

My mother took her seat at the front of the church. Liv grabbed her bouquet of roses. They were totally fake blue roses, not my favorite flower but Eric insisted. I grabbed my white roses and linked arms with my father.

“You are beautiful, sweetheart,” he whispered to me. I nodded up at him, afraid that if I speak I will cry.

“Thank you daddy,” I whispered. “Do you think I’m making the right choice?”

He took a deep breath and leaned in closer to me. “I think that you need to follow your heart. You know your mother and I don’t think Eric is the man for you but there is nothing we can do. You are my stubborn daughter. Just follow your heart and I will be right next to you the whole time,” he whispered. He straightened up and watched as Liv, my maid of honor, walked down the aisle.

“Follow my heart,” I whispered, so quiet that I didn’t know if my father heard or not.

Sensing my nerves, he patted my cheek and pulled me with him as he began the walk to the front of the church…to Eric…to my future.

The church was beautiful, decorated in blue and white. Eric stood at the altar. He had on a regular suit with a blue tie and a rose to match it.

Standing next to him, I thought back to what my father had said. Follow your heart. What was my heart telling me? It was squeezing, to the point of discomfort. It was beating quickly but that was due to the occasion…right?

The priest began talking, getting closer and closer to my part in the ceremony.

Eric was a good man for me. We had a lot in common. Sure he cheated on me, but that was only once and he swore he would never do it again.

My part was getting closer and closer. Hurry up and decide heart!

And then it was my turn to speak. “I do,” I said loudly and clearly.

It seemed like the rest of the ceremony flew by and we were at the reception…and my new husband was nowhere.

I looked around but I could not find him. I didn’t want to raise awareness of this so I did not say anything, simply scanning the crowd was enough for me.

I found him eventually. Not where I wanted him to be. He was in the back, drinking and smoking and making out with a leggy blonde.

I said nothing and went back inside. I thanked everyone and watched as they all left. When he came back in, I still said nothing.

We went to the hotel that we had booked for the night and he collapsed on the bed. He had taken off his shoes and jacket but slept in everything else. So our first night together would be nothing special. I went into the bathroom and climbed out of the dress. I washed my face and pulled out my bun.

When I came back to bed, he was already asleep. He smelt of alcohol and smoke and a perfume that was most certainly not mine. I turned my back to him and stared at the wall until I fell asleep.

My wedding….not at all like what I imagined it would be like. Did I follow my heart or my mind tonight?
