The Wrong Woman

15

“Can you believe we came first?” Maddie squealed in my ear.

“For real?” I mumbled as she climbed on top of me. I could feel her bare legs rub against my hands as she wiggled around, her school uniform riding up her thighs.

“Yes for real! I couldn’t believe it when the teacher told me.” She chattered on, but my eyes were distracted by the curtain falling over the window. We were lying on a lounge chair by her swimming pool, but I couldn’t help but notice some movement in the back of the house. The last thing I needed was her Father to bust me with a hard on.

“Are you sure we’re alone?” I asked nervously.

“Yep, Dad’s away till tomorrow… so it’s just me and you.” She paused. “Unless Felicity’s around.”

The sound of Felicity’s name made me freeze for a moment and my eyes flitted toward the back window again. Was she watching us? I shifted uncomfortably as Maddie settled on my lap.

“Liam and I worked so hard on that project.” Maddie said and I nodded politely. I can only guess what Liam worked hard at: probably trying to convince her I was no good for her. I had seen the way he looked at me; as if I was beneath him and Maddie. Maybe he was right.

Or maybe I was being paranoid. If there was one thing I knew I wasn’t paranoid about, it was my suspicions about Louis. I just knew there was something not right about his intentions.

But there wasn’t much I could do about that; Maddie had told me the day before that Louis had told her off about her falling marks- again. More classes were needed, he had told her.

And there wasn’t a fucking thing I could do to stop it. I was soon distracted by the sensation of Maddie nibbling on my earlobe.

“You want to stay for dinner?” She asked me.

“Mmm?” I said sounding distracted.

“Dinner.” She repeated.

The sound of the back door slamming made our heads snap up and I looked up to see Felicity march toward us. Our eyes met and I could see she had a determined look on her face. Oh shit, I thought, half sitting up and almost knocking Maddie off me.

“I just wanted to let you know I’m not staying for dinner.” She said tightly. “Are you okay to get dinner on your own?”

“Yeah, I’ll be fine.” Maddie replied. She kind of rolled off me and I could tell she was nervous about Felicity’s tense face and the way her eyes looked down at the way Maddie had tangled her body around mine. Maybe Maddie thought Felicity would snitch on us. I knew better though. Felicity’s hot gaze met mine, her lips pressed in a straight line. Seconds later she spun around and walked back to the house.

“You don’t think she’ll tell your Dad about us, do you?” I asked pretending to be nervous. I knew she would not say a thing. But I wished she wouldn’t act so obviously pissed off at the sight of us.

“Nah, she’s got her own secrets.” Maddie giggled.

“Secrets?” I asked not even bothering to hide my curiosity.

“I know she raids the wine fridge at night… and I bet my Dad has no idea. She hides her cigarettes in the basement and sneaks down there to drink and smoke.”

“Oh.” I said.

“Funny huh?”

Fucking hilarious, I thought to myself. I stared at the back window but the curtains didn’t move again. She had really gone. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of emptiness. I had barely seen or spoken to Felicity since she had dropped me at my apartment that night. I had looked for her at the club but she never came. I thought about calling her, but my fingers could not get past dialling the first three numbers. It was no use; there really was no point in bothering to contact her. Felicity and I had ended things that night on the beach. I was so deep in thought that I didn’t hear Maddie calling my name.

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah I am.” I said. But I still couldn’t shake that empty feeling.
That empty feeling followed me home and into bed that night. I didn’t know why and I didn’t know how I was going to get rid of it.

X

I hung around with my mates a lot the next few days. I even crashed on Niall’s couch one night. We had drunk too much and Niall couldn’t drive me home. To be honest, I didn’t really want to go home anyway. Sleeping in an empty bed was starting to do my head in. At least in the past I could rely on Felicity to keep me company. Now I didn’t even have that. I had playfully asked Maddie to stay over, since her Dad was going to be away for a night, but she turned me down.

“I don’t want to risk it.” She had said.

That night at Niall’s house he had invited a couple of girls over.

“This is Vanessa and Brooke.”

Vanessa eyed me with interest. She was probably around my age, with long blonde hair and blue eyes. She wore a short skirt and a tight tank top. Her friend had brown hair tied up in a high ponytail and a turned up nose. She looked cute in her short shorts, but I could see she only had eyes for Niall.

Vanessa sat on the couch, so close that our thighs were touching and I shot Niall a look with raised eyebrows. He just grinned back and disappeared into the kitchen to get more beers.

An hour in and Niall and Brooke were making out and Vanessa had inched herself so close to me that I could smell the scent of her perfume. I placed my hand on her thigh without thinking. I was pressing on it lightly as if to stop her from coming closer, but she seemed to think I was doing it for other reasons and I could feel her shifting closer.

I looked over to see a glint in her eye as she licked her red glossy lips. I don’t know where the music came from but she was suddenly swaying in front of me. I watched her with hooded eyes as she smiled and danced. Vanessa was the kind of girl I would fuck in a heartbeat. She was gorgeous and I knew I could have her and nobody need know, but I felt nothing. It wasn’t even the alcohol. Usually alcohol made me feel invincible. Now all I wanted to do was go home and be on my own. Maddie’s face appeared before me and I suddenly felt sick. I shot up off the couch, ignoring Vanessa’s annoyed look, and grabbed my cigarettes and lighter off the coffee table.

“Where are you going Haz?” Niall had broken away from the brunette and was looking at me quizzically.

“I’ve gotta go.” I mumbled as Niall followed me to the front door.

“Why?” He asked.

“What’s all that about?” I said quietly, gesturing toward the girls in the living room.

“It’s just a couple of girls Harry… you’ve been so down lately I thought you needed something like this.”

“But I can’t do this. Maddie…” I felt myself trail off.

“Zayn told me about that other chick you’re seeing, so I figured you’d like Vanessa.” Niall explained.

“Zayn told you?” I said. I couldn’t believe it. Okay so I didn’t say it was a secret but what was Zayn thinking?

“Yeah...” It was Niall’s turn to trail off uncomfortably.

“Fuck.” I muttered under my breath. “I’ve gotta go.”

“You sure?” Niall said glancing back in the direction of the girls.

“Yeah I’m sure.” I patted Niall on the back. “Nail ‘em both buddy.”

I heard Niall chuckle as I walked out the door to be faced by a cool wind. I closed my eyes to let the breeze blow over my face and I could see could see both Maddie and Felicity. Fuck. Felicity. I stuffed my hands in my pocket and slowly trudged home.

@Court529

I was hoping the ending would be a little surprise... I kind of played around with the idea of doing a second story (follow up on Maddie & Louis' relationship) Maybe... we'll see :)
