Make It Stop ⇼ Luke Hemmings

Sixteen.

“Have I told you how beautiful you look?” Luke asked as he drove. Our date was lovely, full of laughter, the waitress telling us we were an adorable couple, and Luke’s attempt to lure me in with dumb jokes. He held my hand, rubbing his thumb over my knuckles and kissing it lightly.
“About twelve times.” I giggled, scooting closer to him, as if that was even possible. “I had a really nice time, Luke.” I smiled. “Thank you, honestly. It was so lovely.” Grinning at me, he played with his lip ring.
“It was my treat, baby.” I kissed his cheek. “Do you want to come back to mine? We can watch a film.”
“Okay.”

Luke and I were sat on his couch, my head on his chest, as he slowly rubbed my arm in a warming gesture. We were watching the new Spider Man 2 film, I was wearing his boxers and shirt. About halfway through, we heard the door open. Assuming it was just one of the boys, we remained on the couch.
“Lucas!” A woman’s voice called. “We’re home!” It was Liz, her heels clicked against the wood floor as she walked into the living room. Attempting to pull away, Luke tightened his grip on me, gleaming at his mum.
“Hey mum.” He smiled warmly as she walked over, kissing his forehead, I vaguely noticed Ben, Jack, and Luke’s dad walk up the stairs.
“Hello, Romina!” She smiled, her eyes falling to where Luke’s hand secured my waist.
“We’ve to go.” Luke answered for me as my face turned bright red. “I have to go take Romy home.” Liz’s smile faded.
“Oh, no. Don’t just leave because I’m here.” She insisted. “I can go upstairs!” She attempted to walk away as Luke and I stood.
“No, Mrs. Hemmings. It’s my curfew, I have to go anyways.” I insisted, accepting her hug before Luke put his hand on my waist, urging me outside to his car.

The short ride to my house was silent, Luke insisted on seeing me to the door, pulling me to him by my hips, kissing me gently.
“Can I see you tomorrow?” He asked quietly, his face nuzzled in the crook of my neck as we hugged,
“Maybe.” I teased, pulling away from him and staring up, my hands on his chest as he looked down, kissing me briefly.
“I love you.” He assured me, beginning to walk back to his car.

“Luke!” I called after him with a small smile playing at my lips. “Come here.” I told him once he turned back to me. He sauntered over with a smirk.
“Yeah, baby?” He asked quietly. I caught him off guard by pressing my lips roughly against his, holding his cheeks as his hands slipped around my waist, pulling me so our chests connected, deepening the kiss as our tongues danced together. When I finally pulled away, we were trying to catch our breath.
“I love you.” I confessed before I could stop myself, causing silly grins to spread over both our faces, sharing a small laugh. I’m sure Luke could hear my pounding heart.
“You do?” He asked once our laughter died down, biting his lip.
“Yeah.” I blushed, kissing him once again.
“You left your dress at my house.” He reminded me once we separated.
“Half of my wardrobe is at your house.” I joked, earning a small laugh. “I’ll probably get it back sometime.” Luke smiled, kissing me once more before I finally let him go back to his car.

Luke sighed next to me. It’s Saturday afternoon, and all we have to show for it is watching Seinfeld in my bedroom, waiting for mum and Owen to come back home. Luke came over about five minutes after they left and we hadn’t said much since besides an occasional laugh at a corny joke, a few small pecks on cheeks, and a brief moment of handholding before I decided it was too hot and sticky to hold his hand. There was an odd tension between us, as I had told Luke that Owen, mum, and I fought because he was coming over. They opted to go to the store until Owen calmed down so when they came back to Luke, he’d at least be able to hold his tongue. I told mum that I love him, but it still didn’t matter, and that’s the part that I couldn’t tolerate—so naturally, I picked a fight

“It’s so hot.” I complained, throwing my head back to hit the headboard. “So take off your shirt.” Luke smirked at me, earning an eyeroll and playful nudge.
“I wish I had a pool, I’m all sticky and gross.” I sighed, Luke shrugged.
“We could always take a shower together.” He suggested, winking and causing me to blush.
“No.” I laughed, staring at Luke as he shifted to a lying position.
“Pleeeeease?” He pouted. “I promise I won’t touch you.” He grabbed my waist, pulling me on top of him, our sticky skin pressing together. “I won’t even look at you, if that’s what you want.” He mumbled into my shoulder, kissing it gently.
“No.” I repeated, wriggling out of his grip and turning my back to him.
“It’s not like I haven’t touched you before.” He fakely pouted.
“But you haven’t seen me.” I pointed out, turning back to him. “Maybe later.” I half promised, though I knew it’d most likely never happen. Instead of replying, Luke sighed and stood up, opening the windows and lying next to me. He pulled my body back to his, allowing me to snuggle into his chest and close my eyes, ignoring the sweat that was quickly forming between us.

I jerked awake to the sound of my name being called by mum, letting me know she was home.
“Hey.” Luke laughed quietly.
“How long was I-” He cut me off.
“About ten minutes.”

“Maybe we should tell them.” I spoke after a long while of silence, referring to our friends.
“Maybe we shouldn’t.” He objected.
“I mean… Before kaylee makes everything about her. You know how she does that.” Kaylee had a knack to make sure all things revolved her, and it would be especially easy for her now, considering the baby she decided to keep.
“I think we should keep it a secret.” It seemed as though our roles reversed, he was now in objection to telling the group, and I was moderately okay with it—I just wanted to get it over with.
“That’s a selfish thing to say.” I scoffed, pulling away from him.
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?!” Luke blew up, losing his temper. I figured it was the heat and didn’t take much notice or care to his irritability, as I was irritable, too.

“Your friends already know. Mine are going to kill me.” I muttered.
“So we’ll run away, I told you already!” He sounded frantic as I sat up.
“I don’t want to run away with you, Luke.” I regretted it as soon as I said it, knowing fairly well it was not as true as I made it out to be.
“What the fuck does that mean?!?!” He yelled.
“It means I just want to be normal. I want a normal relationship, and it seems like there’s no hope for us unless we become normal!” He rolled his eyes.
“Maybe there isn’t.” He simply stated.
“Luke…” My voice trailed off.
“I’m serious. Maybe there is no hope. There’s hardly hope for anything!” He subconsciously ran his long fingers over his scars.
“Don’t you dare say that.” I pleaded.

“I’m just… I don’t know, Romy. Everything seems hopeless, and I don’t have anyone.” He sat up, moving to the edge of the bed and turning away.
“You have me.” My voice cracked as I attempted to soothingly touch his back, he jerked away, burying his face in his hands.
“Is that ever enough?” He muttered, more to himself. I was unsure whether I was meant to hear it, but it still hurt me to hear him have so little faith in me.
“If not, then you can go.” I suggested, finding myself more angry than upset at this point.
“Goodbye, Romina.” He stood. “Maybe I’ll see you tomorrow.” He suggested slowly, scratching the back of his neck.
“Maybe not.” I spat, hiding my face in the sheets as Luke left my house.
