The Photograph

Chapter 24

Did he just ask that? It’s practically the first day I let him even know about Darcy and be around her. Harry still has the nerve to ask if he could bring someone around her, some other girl. So they can play house with my daughter? I don’t think so.
"Harry, I’m not comfortable with you having her without me. No offense and all but… I don’t know. Don’t take it personal and don’t be offended but I’m not comfortable with you keeping her without me being there. Maybe it’s a mom thing? I don’t really know, I’ve been with her for 7 months already, I’m really protective and I know you’re her dad but you don’t know very much about being a dad.. Again, no offense. I know you had Lux too but it’s different when it’s your daughter. Let me build trust with you, build a relationship, let her get used to you, let you get used to being a dad and then work up to letting you keep her over night. After that maybe, but right now I’m not comfortable with it." I explained quickly, practically out of breath by the time I finished.
"I understand where you’re coming from." Harry nodded in agreement to my lecture.
Moments later, Harry said he felt the need to head home because of how late it was becoming so I walked him to the door and said goodbye. I cleaned up the condo as much as I could before settling in my bed. Only to hear the door slam at 11:30, and moments after that I heard Darcy’s piercing cries sing from her bedroom.
"Chelsea!" I shouted, storming out of my room furious that she woke up Darcy.
"Huh?" She asked spinning around and almost falling to the floor.
"What the hell are you doing? You know Darcy is asleep." I argued.
"Oh! I’m so sorry!" Chelsea covered her mouth, pretending as though she forgot.
Lately, Chelsea has been getting more on my nerves than usual. I don’t know what it is, maybe being a mom has made me mature more but I’m annoyed with her constant need to party all the time. I was beginning to think of moving in with her was a mistake, maybe it needs to be Darcy and I only.
In response I rolled my eyes and waltzed into Darcy’s room where I rocked her in her rocking chair until she was fast asleep 20 minutes later. I laid her back in her crib before sneaking out and falling asleep in my own bed shortly afterwards.
I was waken up to the sounds of Darcy’s giggle coming from the living room. I climbed out of my bed in sweats and a baggy shirt, my hair a mess. I rubbed my eyes as I walked down the hall and into the living room. Chelsea was on the floor playing with Darcy, obviously in a good mood.
"Hey sleepy." Chelsea smiled sitting up when she saw me, pulling Darcy into her lap.
"Hey, so how was your night?" I asked, sitting back on the couch.
"Wild.. Emma the party scene is so much better out here than in New York." Chelsea enthused.
"I have a daughter, I don’t need the party scene around my life at all.." I sighed.
"Are you okay?" Chelsea asked.
"Fine." I responded.
"No your not, tell me what’s up." Chelsea insisted.
"Just lately, I can’t handle your constant coming in late every night and you are so loud that it wakes up Darcy almost every night. Who has to put her back to bed? I do and I almost always wake up with her early. I hate to make you pick but I need space. It’s either help me with Darcy like you used to do or take responsibility around here. Second option is you find a place of your own because this isn’t what I want Darcy to grow up with." I explained.
Chelsea was lost with no words and sighed deeply. I could tell she wanted to stay here for the sake of our friendship but it’s whatever at this point. I could care less, I’m looking for my daughter’s best interest. If that means she has to find a place of her own than so be it. Darcy deserves to have a peaceful night sleep, not to bud in but I do too. I stood up and went into the kitchen, not saying another word.
On the counter, my phone began to vibrate, I picked it up and saw a missed call from Harry only a second ago. I slid the bar on my phone over and called him back. I started pulling ingredients out for a small breakfast meal when Harry answered.
"Hello?" He said.
"Hey, you called?" I asked.
"Yeah, I was wondering what you are doing today." Harry asked.
"Just hanging out here with Darcy, I think." I replied.
"Could I come over?" He questioned.
"Yeah, could you come in an hour? Darcy isn’t up yet." I lied, really I just wanted time to get myself together.
"Yeah, an hour works. I’ll text you before I leave." He said before hanging up.
Immediately I put everything I took out away. I rushed to my bathroom and showered before blow drying my hair and curling it was quickly as I could. I slipped on white jean shorts, a tank top and a light cardigan over it. I put some make up on and walked out of my room to see Chelsea packing things up.
"You’re moving out?" I asked.
"It’s what you wanted, isn’t it?" She questioned.
"Chelsea… You know I’m looking out for my daughter. What else do you want?" I asked.
"Nothing." She responded.
I left her alone and let her pack. I offered to help her find a place on short notice but she said that she’ll move in with one of her new friends here so it wasn’t a big deal. I began cooking what was now basically lunch, so I started to make pasta along with a little bit of Chicken. Once I heard a knock on the door I opened it and saw Harry standing there he smiled at me.
"Where is my baby girl?" He asked.
"Just laid her down for a nap a few minutes ago, she was being fussy. You could help yourself anywhere, don’t wake her up though. I’m making lunch, are you hungry?" I spun around in my walk to the kitchen.
"I could eat. What are you making?" He questioned, following me to the kitchen.
"Some simple pasta and chicken." I replied.
Harry tried to help my cook but it didn’t work well. I laughed at some of his failed attempts. Eventually lunch was finished and we sat across from each other at the table while we chatted about simple things like our past together, Darcy and what we want for Darcy.
During this small chat with Harry I realized how amazing he is, I nearly forgot about it all. He could be so sweet one minute but be a dork the next. It’s fun to watch him in his different elements. I missed how it was before Darcy but I love that little girl and wouldn’t take her back for anything. If only we could really be a family..
