Chapter Eight
“Come on, Katie!” Autumn begged. “Let’s go out! It’ll be fun!” I shrugged and rolled onto my side. Autumn was over in my room (we decided to stay in separate rooms so we wouldn’t get absolutely sick of each other) trying to convince me to go to a club with her and Harry.
“But I won’t have anyone to go with.” I pouted.
“Ask Niall.” She shrugged, but I knew she was hoping he wouldn’t go. She couldn’t stand him.
“His parents are in town, so he’s with them.” I shrugged.
“Well… just go by yourself! Come on, you’ll meet a cute stranger, share a dance or two, maybe a kiss, and who knows where it’ll lead?” I rolled my eyes. Autumn didn’t like Niall, and she made it no secret either. “Just come, please. You can’t be locked up in your room all night.” I rolled out of bed.
“Fine.” I quickly changed and threw my makeup on in less than twenty minutes… I was pretty impressed with myself. “Ready.” I shrugged as Autumn came into my room hand in hand with Harry. I nearly puked. They were still so sickeningly cute together, it made me almost hate them.
We all piled into Harry’s Range Rover and made our way to a local club. Autumn and I walked in with our arms linked as Harry went to park his car. “First round’s on me!” Autumn yelled over the music and led me to the bar. “Two green apple Smirnoff’s please!” She ordered. As soon as we hand them in hand, Harry was back and invited Autumn to dance.
“Have fun!” I yelled as they left me at the bar… alone… I sighed and took a big drink and spotted a guy in the back eyeing me. He wasn’t too bad looking, I suppose, but I could hear Niall’s voice in my head. “You’re mine and mine alone.” I felt a chill go down my spine and the man started to approach me. I smiled as he reached me. “Katie!” I yelled over the music.
“Joseph!” He yelled back. “Would you… would you like to dance?”
“I’d love to!” I smiled and took his hand as he led me out to the middle of the dance floor, automatically turning me to face him. Joseph placed my arms around his neck and wrapped his arms around my back as we causally danced to the beat.
That’s not how it stayed, though. Soon after Autumn and harry met him, it was ass to crotch once they were out of sight, and I got a strange sense of déjà vu as his lips connected to my neck. I turned to face him and smiled before he kissed my lips hungrily. I wrapped my arms around his neck and leaned into the kiss heatedly. “Your place or mine?” He asked as he rested his forehead on mine.
I don’t know whether it was the alcohol, or a spur of the moment decision, but I agreed to go back to his apartment.
Katie: Left early with Joseph. See you tomorrow! Xx
As soon as we were in his apartment, Niall’s words rang in my head over and over and over again. “You’re mine and mine alone.” I shook them out of my head and kissed Joseph with as much heat as possible before he shoved me against the wall, wrapping my legs around him and carrying me to his bedroom, stripping us both on the way there.
“You’re so beautiful,” Joseph mumbled as he ground his hips into mine. I arched my back as he kissed the area between my breasts. “God, I can’t wait to make love to you.”
No one had ever talked to me like that before… it was weird, but definitely a nice weird.
The sex wasn’t all that great, though. Definitely nothing compared to Niall. Oh shit. Niall. He couldn’t know about this…

The next morning I woke up to an empty room and a note from Joseph.
Katie,
I went out to get us some breakfast. Stay in bed as long as you’d like. I’ll be back, love.

I smiled at the sweet gesture, but gathered my clothes and checked my cell phone.
Niall: Fancy a game of FIFA later? Just cos you kicked my arse last time doesn’t mean you will again!
Niall: I’ll take that as a ‘no’…?
Niall: Okay, don’t mean to sound creepy, but I got worried and went by your room… where are you?
Niall: Let me know when you get this so I know you’re okay.
Katie: Sorry, stayed at a friend’s last night. I’m okay :) no need to worry. Be back for that game of FIFA ;)
Niall: See you soon!
Just as I was getting dressed, Joseph walked in with breakfast. “Leaving so soon?” He asked and set the tray of McDonald’s food on the bed.
“Yeah… I’m sorry. I told a friend I’d meet them in two hours.”
“It’s okay, love. I had an incredible time.” Joseph wrapped his arms around my waist and kissed me.
“Me too,” I smiled through the lie. “I’ll call you sometime, yeah?” I said as I ran out, never grabbing his number.
Niall’s POV
I paced the frat house waiting for Katie to get back. I knew she had went out with Autumn and Harry that night, so I went by his room but stopped when I heard he was on the phone. “So that Joseph guy didn’t like kill her or anything, right? Last I heard she just went to his apartment.” Harry laughed. “Has she texted you today?”
“Yeah, she told me she was almost to campus… and Harry, whatever you do; don’t mention this to Niall.” Don’t mention what to me? I listened closely. “She already regrets sleeping with Joseph, and she doesn’t want Niall to find out… she was pretty hammered.” They couldn’t have been talking about Katie… my Katie.
“Will do, baby.” Harry chuckled. “Do you think they’ll hang out today?”
“When don’t they hang out?” Autumn scoffed. I knew she hated me… it was definitely no secret. “Yeah, as long as Katie doesn’t let anything slip, she’ll be okay.” It was Katie.
My blood was boiling. It took everything in me not to punch through the door out of pure rage. I ran into my room and slammed the door behind me, causing the walls to shake. I paced my room, running my hands through my hair. I was angry. I was filled with hate. No, the opposite of hate. Hurt. I was filled with hurt. Why did it hurt? I was almost pulling my hair out, and that was less painful than whatever the hell my emotions were doing.
There was a knock on my door, and I ran over and yanked it open.
Katie.
The hurting ceased a little bit, but was definitely still there. “Hey,” She smiled and walked into my room. “So FIFA?”
“Who’s Joseph?” I blurted out. Dammit, Horan. Smooth. I saw the color drain from Katie’s face. “I overheard your friends talking about it… now who the hell is he?”
“Niall, let me explain…” She took a cautious step towards me. “I was drunk… we were dancing… things got a little out of control. I swear, I never meant to.” I shook my head and began to pace the room again. “Please say something.”
“Was he good?”
“What?”
“Was he good?”
“Well, no… but—“
“Do you know how many girls I’ve slept with in the past month, Katie?”
“That’s none of my business—“
“One. You. Only you.” Suddenly Katie’s shoes became very interesting to her. “Do you know why?” She shook her head. “Hell, neither do I!” I continued pacing the room. “How come you’re the one who’s seemed to make me go from at least ten, to one?” Katie seemed to find her courage somewhere, and she stood in front of me, blocking my path.
“I’m not an object to be claimed Niall! I’m a fucking human being!” I took a step back from her. “And why is it okay for you to go out and fuck whoever the hell you want, but when it comes to me, I can’t!? Give me one good reason, and I might just stay.” That’s when it hit me. That’s why I never wanted her to leave. That’s why I never wanted anyone to have her. That’s why it’s always been her. One good reason.
Katie’s POV
“I’m not an object to be claimed Niall! I’m a fucking human being!” Niall took a step back from me, his expression was growing softer. “And why is it okay for you to go out and fuck whoever the hell you want, but when it comes to me, I can’t!?” I was screaming by this point. I didn’t care who heard. “Give me one good reason, and I might just stay.”
“Because I love you, dammit!”
“But I won’t have anyone to go with.” I pouted.
“Ask Niall.” She shrugged, but I knew she was hoping he wouldn’t go. She couldn’t stand him.
“His parents are in town, so he’s with them.” I shrugged.
