Dear Mom
Moms are important.
They teach you how to live life.
They help you make the right choices in life - most of the time.
My mom did all of those.
She also hid how well she was depressed from my father's death.
So while I was talking with Emmy Lou Jackson, my best friend, in One Direction's recording studio, to say I was confused when my phone rang and Mom's number popped up is an understatement.
"Do you just wanna go crash at my place? We could watch a movie," Emmy suggested, smiling.
I opened my mouth to reply, only to be interrupted by my phone. Frowning, I held up a finger. "I gotta take this...Mom?" I walked out, knowing whatever she wanted to say was important.
"This is Jack from the NY PD. Is this Zoey Hartness?"
My eyes widened, and I silently closed the door behind me. "Yes.." I mumbled nervously, fiddling with the hem of my shirt.
"You're Kelly Hartness's daughter, yes?"
"I am."
"I'm sorry to say, but your mother committed suicide an hour ago. We don't have much information, but we're gonna need you to come in for questioning."
I felt numb. They had to have the wrong person - my mom wasn't in New York! She was visiting friends in London.
Feeling my heart pick up, I shook my head. "I'm sorry, but you must be mistaken. My mother is in London, visiting some old friends; not New York."
Jack grunted. "Ma'am, I'm looking at the blood results, the finger prints...just about anything that can give an identification, and it says here that this woman's name is Kelly Hartness."
My heart seemed to jump into my throat. "You're sure?" My voice was just barely louder than a whisper.
"Unfortunately, yes."
I nodded before remembering the man on the other side couldn't see me. "Okay. Bye." Hanging up, I gave myself a second to recompose myself before walking back into the room my sister and friends were in.
The minute we were alone, Emmy leaned in and put a comforting arm around my shoulders. "What's up?" Her voice told me she wasn't taking 'it's nothing' as an answer.
I pushed a hand through my hair. "Mom committed suicide an hour ago...that was the police calling me. Listen, could you take Jaylee for a few days? They want me for questioning..." I let my sentence trail off, suddenly unsure of whatelse I had to say.
Emmy smiled reassuringly. Of course. We have the perfect guest room for her."
I nodded and let out a sigh. "I need to book a flight.." I forgot my surroundings for a second and squeezed my eyes shut to stop the flow of tears that were about to surface. When I opened them again, I murmured, "And I need to text Niall...after his interview."
Emmy's hand ran in reassuring circles on my back. "If you need anything, just call, okay? I'll get one of the body guards to go with you...probably Jamie...the fans get crazy jealous, even at this stage of dating."
I nodded; I'd seen it on my Twitter page and decided to deactivate. "Thanks, Em."
She smiled, before catching Jaylee's attention with the mention of a movie.
Several hours later, I was packing my bags for a week in NY. The Police Department had told me where to go, so all I needed to do was fly there, and find my way around the large city.
A peice of cake.
Said no one ever.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just arriving at the NYPD, I could feel my stomach drop as I made my way to the door. I never thought I'd be here because my mother committed suicide. She wasn't ever like that - always loving and compassionate. She'd always have a smile on her face; unless she was scolding Jaylee or me.
A knot formed in my stomach. How am I going to tell Jaylee? She shouldn't have to expeirnce this - if anything, she should just see her goldfish die...it shouldn't have much longer to live, should it?
I walked up to the front desk. "I'm looking for Officer Jack?"
The woman smiled at me and murmured, "One moment, please." She picked up the phone and dialled a few numbers. "Officer Sherrel, you have someone here to see you."
I could hear the muffled response through the phone, but it wasn't loud enough to interpret what he was saying.
She hung up the phone and turned her attention back to me. "He told me to send you down to his office. It's straight down the hall, last door on your left."
I nodded and started walking where she had direction, mumbling a quick, "Thank you."
Last door on my left. Last door on my left. I repeated that over and over again until I had come across the door. I knocked on the door and you could hear the deep voice on the other side say 'Come in.' I obliged and open the door.
"Please sit, Ms. Hartness."
