Chapter 1

Codi's POV
Saturday

I was counting down the hours. Finally it was spring break, getting a break from those obnoxious high school kids I teach. Well, student teach. My last semester. Ready to be on a white sandy beach with my family. But of course their flight was delayed, hour number three. I should have expected it, its March, and we lives in Minnesota.

I had no idea why I got all dressed up for a flight. My straight, long, brown hair was bothering me, I preferred it in a pony tail or a braid. I loved my simple, short, white dress, it's my favorite but not quite appropriate for teaching. And my go to favorite red flats. I'd rather be in sweatpants, but at least I'd look good when we landed. If we ever got on the plane.

“This is taking for-ever!” My sister, Maggie, said dramatically as she plopped on the chair next to me throwing her hands out and dropping her head back.

“Did you bring me breakfast?” I asked. “I did save your seat from everyone.”

Maggie looked around, “There's no one here Codi. But, yes I got you a sandwich from McDonalds.” She throws the bag at me as she unwraps her McGriddle and take a huge bite.

“What time is it?” she asks with a mouth full of sausage, eggs, and cheese.

“Um gross. And it's 9:45.” I reply with a groan.

“Great, now we'll miss our connecting flight in Miami. We've been here since 5:30! Our flight was suppose to leave at 6:15!”
Maggie can be a little dramatic sometimes.

For being sisters were pretty much alike, personality wise at least. We can be loud, funny, stubborn, and at times creative. However, I'm usually shy, at first. Maggie just jumps right in, all the time. I'm a senior at the U, Maggie is almost done with her freshman year. The only thing that's really different is I'm 5'7”, Maggie is 5'4”, we both have brown hair. I have blue eyes, she has green eyes. I look more like my dad, and Maggie is a little more exotic like my mom. Speaking of my parents...

“Are we boarding yet?” My dad asks like a two year old. Like asking for the millionth time.

“No dad. They haven't even called us to stand in line.
” I respond with a major eye roll.

“James, just eat and be quiet.”
My mom snapped.

She didn't like getting up early for nothing. Mom's dad is originally from Brazil so she can get a little bit feisty, her mom is from Chicago, they met when my grandmother studied abroad in Brazil, she never left until they had been married a few years. They moved back to the Chicago area and stayed their until their kids (my mom, and aunt, and uncle) had graduated from college then moved back to Rio. Mom has a “Brazilian” name, Geovanna, everyone calls her Anna instead. We never take it personal when she snaps. Its just mom being mom. Dad could usually always cheer her up, but at this point everyone was just frustrated. After our flight from Minneapolis to Miami, we had a few hours to make it to our connecting flight to Aruba. Aruba. I couldn't wait. A week of sun, drinks, and family. And no high school kids. Thank God.

“No boarding first class flight 8567 nonstop from Minneapolis to Miami” We hear over the loud speakers, a cheer erupts from our little waiting section. I didn't think it would be a full flight, it looked to be a larger plane but not that many people waiting in our area.

We throw all our trash away and get prepared to wait in line. We weren’t first class, but we were closer to the front of the plane. We weren't a rich family, I'm sure my parents would have more money if they didn’t fully support my sister and I's education and help us out as much as possible but they did, and they were amazing. They did come into some money when my dad's parents died, since dad was an only child he inherited the house and their bank account, but mom and dad were savers and after they sold the house they used the money to go to Rio more often to visit my grandparents. Dad was a superintendent, pretty much the reason I became a teacher. Mom is a charge nurse over oncology at Children's. After like 20 years, she's finally on days. It's weird to see her at home in the evenings. I lived with my parents during student teaching because it's closer to the school I'm at.

Finally making our way into our seats, I gave Maggie my window seat, I was hoping to sleep the whole way to Miami anyway. Dad squeezed past someone and sat across from us, Mom was on the other side of me. I turned off my phone and snuggled next to my sister as she opened a book to start reading during our take off.

-------------------------------------------------------

“Codi, wake up!”
I hear my sister as shes violently shaking me. “Were landing soon.”

“We only have 40 minutes to get to the other side of the airport for our next flight. Get ready Codi.”
I can hear my mom complaining. Guess someone didn't get any sleep.

We gather our things and leave the plane, preparing to fight people to our flight. Finally get to our gate as they're calling last call. I didn't even have time to pee.

The flight to Aruba is pretty empty. I'm glad though, I like when you have room to stretch out. So much room that our three and three row seats were empty except for us. So we got to sit with an empty seat in the middle of us. Of course, Maggie sat by the window, didn't matter to me, as soon as we sat down in the isle seat, I laid on the middle seat. Only fair, right?

I tried to turn my brain off, teaching was going well, but lets face it, not a lot of high school kids are as excited about history as I am. Doesn't matter to me, its important. After I got my degree I wanted to teach for a few years and get my masters. My life long dream was to get my P.h.D and teach at the university level. It would take a lot of work but it's been something I've wanted to do for a while now.

Maggie had life figured out. She was only 18, soon to be 19 this week actually, but she had always wanted to teach dance. We were both on the dance team at the U, but never together, she was a freshman this year, and with my school commitments I could only dance on the team for three years. Maggie was majoring in dance and business. She was planning on opening up her own studio. And I knew she could, she had the drive and talent to.

I just liked history. I was kind of a book nerd, didn't really bother me. But this vacation, I vowed to not open a book unless I was on a beach and have fun. I shifted in my makeshift “bed” and slowly closed my eyes for another nap to take over..

@Louis girl

I'm glad you liked it! I probably could have kept going but I didn't want a story that just dragged on and on!

@Emmy2320
I knew you probably wouldn't like the ending, but there is hope in the last section! I'm not exactly opposed to a sequel, I just don't have any idea where I would go with it as of right now. :) I'm working on a new one right now and I'll let everyone know on here when I post it!

I really enjoyed this story even if I am a little sad that they didn't get together! You are an amazing writer and I love that this wasn't a typical story. A sequel would be wonderful but I understand if you don't want to write one! I look forward to reading more of your stories in the future! :)
