Too Late For Regrets
Chapter 1
Janice and I were at the local coffee shop that we always went. The waitresses were nice, the coffee was good, and their Cinnabon Waffles were heavenly.
But something was different today. Janice kept looking over her shoulders as if someone would grab her right out of the coffee shop. Her beautiful brown eyes had bags under them and she looked as if she might pass out at any moment.
Janice looked over her shoulder again, before putting some of her waffle in her mouth.
"Can you stop that? It's beginning to freak me out." I said in exasperation. Janice would've usually given me a sheepish smile but all she did was sigh and pick at her waffles.
"Okay, dish." I said, putting my fork down on my plate so that she could see that I was dead serious. Janice grimaced as if she had hoped I wouldn't ask. I gave her a pointed look as I waited to find out what the hell was wrong with my best friend.
Janice sighed once more before looking over her shoulder again and then began quietly speaking.
"I had a nightmare. I was in a really creepy house and this evil… presence was there. It was chasing me and saying I couldn't get away and when I tried to call my mum it broke my phone. I ran outside and ended up in the middle of the road, about to be ran over when I woke up." Janice croaked out.
"So you had a dream that a ghost was chasing you." I restated bluntly. Janice nodded and sipped her coffee.
"Anything sounds small and insignificant when you say it like that..." She mumbled.
"Well it was just a dream. There are no such things as ghosts." I said, resuming my breakfast.
"I don't know…" Janice said, looking over her shoulder again.
"What?" I asked.
"There was just…something off about that dream. It felt too real." She shook her head, obviously trying to get the memory out of her head. I sighed and bit my lip, unsure of how to ease her mind.
"How about this? If you have that dream again just call me and I'll come over with marshmallows and pizza and I'll stay the night so you can fall asleep." I said with a smile. Janice immediately brightened up and she looked at me with hopeful eyes.
"Would you really?" She asked, a cute smile gracing her features.
"Of course! You're my best friend, I'd do anything for you." I stated truthfully.
"Thank you." She beamed. I liked making her smile because she didn't do it often enough.
"You're welcome. Now stop looking over your shoulder every goddamn minute and finish your breakfast." I smile. If Janice was happy, I was happy.
