Chapter 10

Annie’s POV

Friendships and relationships are a hard thing to figure out. When you first meet someone and you have a positive connection, it seems that nothing can stand in your way; nothing could possibly go wrong when it started out so flawlessly.

I remember how I met Peter…. I remember it like it was yesterday though it seemed so long ago… It wasn’t complex or at all. It wasn’t like our two paths miraculously crossed each other’s. It was actually quite cliché.

Flashback

“Get me a martini dry.” I glanced at the bartender and he nodded and took out a glass.

“So you’re telling me you never dated in high school?” My friend Bethany asked.

I looked down and chuckled as I tried to disguise the evidence of my diseased relationship. I looked back up at her, “ I didn’t really have time for boys.” I shrugged as I took a sip of the martini the bartender had placed in front of me. I welcomed the familiar burn of the alcohol on the back of my throat.

“But you were a California girl from fucking Los Angeles when you moved to London. Weren’t those British jocks just drooling over you?” She laughed as she took a swig of her beer.

“Hey, I said I never had a boyfriend. I never said no one asked.” I winked at her and her mouth opened slightly as she hit my arm playfully.

“Excuse me miss. But can I buy you a drink?” I heard a deep husky voice say behind me. I don’t want to sound snobby, but I was used to this happening and they were usually too drunk to remember my name five minutes after I’d tell them.

I kept my legs crossed as I glanced over my shoulder. My eyes racked down a guy with short wavy blonde hair and sky blue eyes. He had a light scruff on his face and his smirk suggested something a little bit… dangerous. Damn he was hot…

I squinted my eyes at him and pretended like I wasn’t interested. I picked up my martini and waved it in front of me before taking a sip to show I already had one and I turned back around. Bethany was giving me a devilish smile and I winked at her to let her know I was going to make him work for it.

All of a sudden I felt someone’s ribcage rub against my shoulder and I looked over to find the wavy blonde haired guy standing directly next to me. I looked up at him in confusion and then flinched as I felt my drink being pulled out of my hand. He had wrapped his arm around my shoulder and plucked it out of my hand. He threw the contents remaining in the glass over his shoulder and a girl shrieked in surprise as the liquid dumped on her scapula. The whole time this was happening the boy hadn’t removed his gaze from mine and I had to be honest, it was making my heart race. He brought the glass up in front of his face and peered into it.

“It appears your drink is gone. May I buy you another one?” He asked. I felt my mouth form a small “o” and nodded. He whispered something to the bartender and nodded before looking back down at me, his left hand now resting on the bar so Bethany was pushed out of the conversation. Her eyes became wide and pointed, telling me that she was going to let me be. He looked down at me and smiled, “Peter” He said.

“Annie.” I replied and he smiled showing me his perfect white teeth.

Two Hours Later…

I slammed my shot glass onto the bar as Peter did the same. I took a deep breath and looked to the ceiling as the alcohol went into my system. Peter shifted his stool closer to mine so that his knees here on both sides of my crossed legs. He rested his warm hand on my upper thigh and let out a drunken laugh.

“Okay so wait. You grew up here in LA and you own your own art gallery?” He laughed.

“That is correct.” I giggled as Peter’s hand shifted a centimeter up my thigh to catch himself from falling over.

“Then why the hell is your accent so weird? You sound half American and half British.”

“Oh well I lived in London for two years. I guess it just rubbed off on me.” I shrugged and took sip of my beer.

“Whyyyy did you move to London?!” He asked.

“My mom’s work.” I replied resting my chin in my hand.

Peter moved a strand of my golden curls behind my ear and trailed his index finger along my jaw until it rested on the point of my chin. “Would you be completely appalled if I kissed you now?” He asked returning his gaze to mine.

I shook my head nervously as I felt my cheeks flush pink. He cupped my face with both of his hands. He pulled my face toward his but his mouth rested on my ear. When he spoke warm breath billowed my golden curls. “Close your eyes.” He whispered and my heart skipped a beat as I shut my eyes quickly. His mouth pulled away from my ear and all of a sudden I felt his lips on my left temple for a second, and then they shifted to my right eyelid. I let out a small gasp and his lips pecked my cheekbone. Then his lips grazed over mine teasingly. I rested my hands on his chest and fisted his leather jacket in my hands. I pulled his lips against mine fiercely and I felt him smile against my mouth before he twirled his fingers through my curls. We broke away moments later to catch our breath as we both searched the other’s face for a reaction. We both smiled simultaneously and I knew that I’d be seeing a lot more of him in my life.

End of Flashback

I opened my eyes to blinding lights above me. I squinted my eyes and lifted my arm to shield my eyes. When I adjusted enough to the light I glanced around the room I and saw a white ceiling with white walls decorated with an assortment of paintings. I let out a small grunt. They need to work on their color blending skills…

I looked to my right and saw that I was hooked up to a bunch of machines with a small table on wheels next to my bed with a tray that held an assortment of medicines. I glanced down at my wrist and for the first time I registered that I had an IV in my arm. I looked up again and tried to study the walls as tears rimmed my eyes, memories slowly starting to come back to me. I lifted my hand to my left temple and felt gauze.

“Shit…” I breathed. I flinched when I heard someone stir and gasp to my left.

“Annie you’re awake!” The person said.

I looked over at my visitor and my eyes grew wide. “Harry?”

Harry’s POV

I tapped my foot impatiently as I glanced at the clock.

“And that’s it you just left?” Liam asked me.

I nodded putting my head down. “Yeah. I can’t just barge into her life like that again.”

“Mate, I thought you said her boyfriend sounded pissed as fuck.” Louis countered from across the hotel room’s living room.

“Yeah I know.” I growled as I clenched my teeth. I glanced at the clock again.

“Haz, you’ve been here for ten minutes calm down.” Zayn said trying to sooth me.

“I can’t calm down. I’m really worried that he’s going to do something to her.” I sighed as I pushed my curls back on top of my head.

“Annie’s smarter than to get involved with a douche Harry.” Niall said.

I stood up from the couch quickly and grabbed my jacket off of the chair as I shoved my arms through the sleeves.

“Whaaat are you doing?” Louis asked as he leaned forward.

“I’m going to make sure she’s okay.” I said simply.

“Harry—“ Liam started.

“What? What Liam? What?” I snapped and whirled back around as all four of the guys looked at me with concerned faces. “I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I knew she got hurt or, God forbid, taken advantage of because of me. I can’t do it.” None of them said anything. “I’ll cover myself and I’ll take the car that the paps don’t recognize don’t worry.” I said as I pulled my beanie on and put sunglasses over my eyes. I grabbed the car keys and shoved them into my pockets as I walked toward the door. None of the boys said a word.

Everyone has that one person in their life that no matter what milestones you may come to, you’ll get through it together. No matter how many arguments or rough patches you’ll remain friends or at least a little more. No matter how long a silence can be, you can pick up the conversation right where you left off even if it had been months. These are the people that impact you the most….and for me…. That was Annie.

Annie is the person that I know I could still tell anything to; that even though we didn’t end on the best of terms, we’ll probably work it out and be friends. The only problem here, however, is…what if I don’t want to be friends…What if I wanted to be more…

I parked the decoy car near Annie’s building and jogged up to the front door with my head down and my hood up. When I reached the door I glanced up and quickly leaned against the brick wall bordering the glass doors because someone was walking out of them. He opened the door and rushed away from the gallery without looking back. I glanced back at the fleeing guy…. That must be Peter.

When he had disappeared around the block I whipped my hood and shades off and rushed into the gallery. They lights were out and Carlton had already gone home. The gallery, now extinguished of light, had an almost ominous feel to it. I bolted over to the stairwell and raced up the concrete stairs as fast as my legs would carry me. When I reached the door to her apartment I tried to calm my rapid breathing and pounding heart as the burning in my legs died down.

My stomach erupted with butterflies when I saw that her door had been left slightly open… Has she just not noticed or is something terribly wrong? I yanked the door open immediately as the second scenario washed through my mind. I glanced around the dark room and I felt my stomach churn when I saw Annie lying helplessly on the floor. I saw a dark red spot on the side of her head, and a similar spot collecting on the floor beside her.

“Shit shit shit.” I hissed and ran over to her. I collapsed onto the floor beside her, my hands shaking as I tried to see what that bastard had done to her. I felt tears begin to flow down my cheeks. “Annie! Annie!” I cried but she wasn’t responding. She was unconscious. “Shit shit shit.” I hissed again. “Shit the car is too far away for me to carry her there. Shit!” I shoved my hand in my pocket and pulled out my cell phone. I dialed 911 immediately.

“911 what is your emergency?” A woman answered. How the fuck is this lady so damn calm.

“Hi yes! I came over to my….” Shit what do I call her… “Friend’s apartment,” dammit… “and I found her lying on the floor with a very severe blow to her head. Please send an ambulance she’s unconscious!”

“What is the address?” Why is this bitch still calm…

“I—I don’t know. It’s the Gallery of A, third floor.”

“We’ll be there as soon as we can.” She said and clicked off.

I chucked my cell phone onto the couch behind Annie. “Fuck!” I screamed. I sprinted into the kitchen and grabbed a rag that I could press to the wound to stop the bleeding. I ran back over to her and picked her up bridal style. I rested her head on my shoulder and sat down on the couch. I hesitantly pressed the cloth to her temple, and when I became more comfortable I added more pressure. I rocked back and forth as I tried to contain the sobs that were so desperate to escape my mouth. “Shit Annie.” I whimpered and I held her hand with the hand that wasn’t holding the cloth. “It’ll be okay babe, they’re coming. We’ll get you better.” I soothed though I wasn’t sure if I was trying to comfort Annie or myself.

All of a sudden I heard sirens outside and could see flashing blue and red lights. Moments later I heard footsteps pounding up the stairs. Two guys pushed the door open and carried in a stretcher. I stood up from where I sat, still with Annie in my arms. They set up the stretcher and I placed her on there like she was a delicate piece of paper. The two men strapped my poor baby on and lifted it as they began to rush toward the door. I followed like a lost puppy as I tried to contain myself.

Either the paramedics had no idea who I was or they just hadn’t registered it yet… I wasn’t complaining. We neared the glass doors and I whipped my hood up and shoved my sunglasses on. The paramedics lifted Annie into the ambulance and one of them extended a hand to help me get into the vehicle. I took it gladly and hoisted myself up before the doors were closed behind me. We were soon speeding down the street and I took my hood and sunglasses off.
The paramedics were busy examining Annie’s temple and trying to do anything they could in this cramped space.

“Do you know how this happened?” One of them turned to me.

“I think it was her boyfriend. He was coming over when I was leaving.” I said around the knot that was still choking me. The paramedic nodded and turned his attention back to Annie.

“You’re positive.” I said folding my arms across my chest.

“Yes Mr. Styles. She’ll need stiches and time to rest and regain her strength but there is no long term damage.” The doctor told me as he folded his clipboard under his arm.

I took my hand and began rubbing my temple. “Y—You’re absolutely positive.” I said again. He raised an eyebrow at me. “Right sorry. Thank you doctor.” He nodded and began to walk down the hallway. I looked down and flinched when I saw a few drops of blood scattered on my shirt. I hadn’t realized that had happened.

I felt around my pockets. “Dammit.” I said to myself. I left my phone on Annie’s couch. I walked over to the front desk for the floor we were on. “Excuse me where might I find a phone?” I asked. The woman looked up at me around her red glasses and pointed with her pen toward a pay phone just down the hall. “Right thanks.” I nodded and she looked back at her computer. I shoved a few quarters into the slot and lifted the phone to my ear as I punched in the number that I wanted to call.

“Hello?” Said someone timidly.

“Lou it’s me Harry.” I said quickly.

“Haz! Wow that made me nervous at first. Where are you? And what phone are you calling from?” He asked.

“I’m at the hospital. That bastard hit her Lou. Hit her hard. She needs stiches.” I said the know returning to my throat.

“Fuck.” Louis muttered.

“Yeah I know.” I said and I pushed my curls back on top of my head.

“Do you want me to come down there?” He asked.

“It’d be helpful. Oh can you bring me a new shirt?” I asked.

“Why?” He chuckled.

“Uh,” I paused, “I got some of Annie’s blood on me.” I whispered as I looked down at the scarlet spots.

“Damn how hard did her hit her?” He asked and I could feel his tension rising.

“Hard Lou. I’ll explain everything more when you get here just please hurry up.” I said and returned the phone back on its hook.

I walked back to Annie’s room slowly, the day’s event finally catching up to me. I was exhausted. I sat down in a chair on her left side and I rested my head in my hand before I drifted off to sleep.
