Life As It Was
Two
Louis
As I had first spun around to face her, only to learn it was Eleanor Melody, I first had the intentions of snapping at whatever stranger it was. Who am I kidding? I only stopped from snapping at her because she stunned me. Yes, this may sound sappy, but in pictures she is pretty, but when you actually meet her in real life.
Let's just say, damn.
"Uh.. thanks, I guess," I mumbled quietly and turned to Clarice, fleeing from the embarrassing moment and standing behind her desk. I sighed quietly as she walked up. "So.. just, where's the little girl?"
But all Clarice did was smile at me, her old aged eyes gleaming with delight. "You think that girl is pretty, don't you Louis?" She asked quietly. I was thanking the lord over and over in my head that Clarice actually knew how to whisper right now.
Yet, I shrugged, glancing around the bookshelf to see she'd turned back to her book and continued to read. "Yea, who wouldn't?" I asked and turned back to Clarice, who had a knowing look in her eyes as she shuffled around her desk.
"Just so you know, the girl you came to pick up," she spoke slowly, stacking a few books on the edge of the counter, "is her." With a small smile, she gave me a wink and walked to the back of the store. Or as I called it, right now, mainly because Eleanor, Eleanor Melody, was now walking up to the desk, the safe haven.
"Do you work here?" She chimed, setting two books on top of the desk that was the only thing between us. But she didn't wait for an answer, as I just stood there shocked and dumb-looking most likely. "You should have just called off today, the storm is horrible." She mumbled, almost under her breath.
I nodded. How am I supposed to tell this girl I have to take her back to her apartment? Wherever that may be? I sighed this time and took the two books. "Buying or renting?" I didn't actually work here, but I'd been here enough to know how Clarice did things in here.
"Buying. They're quite interesting actually. Original copies." She sent a gentle smile my way as I checked the books out of the system.
I nodded again. "Since you bought original copies, it's fifteen percent off," I spoke while typing in a few things on the keyboard, glancing up at her a few times.
She shrugged and stuffed the books in a bag she'd had over her shoulder. "Than any extra is yours," she smiled at me again, setting a hundred on the counter. I gaped at her, stunned for a few moments before snapping myself back out of it and exchanging her money for the extra change.
Setting the extra on the counter ((and the extra was just twenty six euros so it wasn't much really)) I slid it over to her. "I'm fine on money," I shrugged and walked around the counter. "I don't actually work here anyway."
Eleanor seemed confused for a moment, her eyebrows knitting together and her bottom lip in a slight pout. Which may I say is quite adorable. "Oh, so you just wanted to flirt?" She raised an eyebrow, but now, nothing in her expression showed playful anymore.
She went toward the door, stuffing her extra money in her bag and I quickly followed her, holding my arm out so she couldn't exit. Eleanor gasped, looking at me. "What are you doing? I don't want to be harassed, thank you very much."
I shook my head quickly, dropping my arm. "No! No, that's not what I was doing.. it's just.. well, it's really.. wet and rainy outside. Don't you have a jacket or something?" I looked at her outfit and like I said earlier, it was classy and casual, but it was not made for a rainy day. I raised an eyebrow at her this time.
With a groan, she shook her head, her arms shortly crossing afterword while she looked through the see-through door. "I don't, I just didn't check the weather this morning," she turned to me, "I think I'll be fine though. Thank you." She grabbed the handle, going to open to the door.
"I was told to make sure you got home," I blurted, making her stop in her tracks and stare at me, like she was debating whether to believe me or not, "this huge guy, who really intimidated me, came to my door like half an hour ago and just asked me to come get you and make sure you got back safe and in one piece."
She still didn't seem to be on my side yet. I sighed, continuing, "He said he had to go with your aunt, urgent business. But he didn't say anything else. I swear I'm not lying. You can trust me." I looked at her cautiously, waiting for her to bite my head off.
Instead, she simply nodded, taking a step back. "You lead the way." Her smile had returned slightly and I could tell she'd still be a little on edge with me, but I nodded and opened the door.
"You know, my jacket may not be much protection, but it does help," I smiled genuinely over at her and she walked closer. I chuckled, "I don't bite," I yelled as I stepped out into the rain, holding my right jacket side open for her to duck under. She rolled her eyes, and I could tell playfully, before standing underneath it.
It didn't take long for us to make it back to the building, but still, by the time we were inside we were both soaked. Although, luckily enough for her I guess, neither of her new books were wet. And her blouse seemed to be alright. But still a little see-through.
"Nice bra, by the way," I chirped at her while stepping into the elevator, pressing the button for my floor and waving at her. I noticed she had a small blush on her cheeks as she raised her bag high over her and quickly stepped into the elevator.
"So that's it?" She asked, once inside and the doors had snapped shut and we'd begun to move. "You aren't even going to ask to meet up or ask for my number?" I looked at her while leaning in a corner, curious.
"You just got out of a relationship," I reminded her but immediately regretted it. I noticed the change in her eyes. Once they were brighter, and now they'd grown slightly darker as she turned away.
"You're right," she managed to choke out back. I could tell she was upset. Just by the way her voice almost cracked, and by how much it seemed to take for her to let out those few words.
I sighed, "You dropped some dead weight, though," I spoke with a small chuckle, trying to lighten the heavy mood as the doors opened, the lights flickering on in my hallway.
She glanced over at me, her mouth hanging open, "It was you! You're the reason that hashtag, that trend, existed in the first place!" She snapped and recrossed her arms. That was, until I pointed at her almost completely showing bra again and she re-raised her bag.
"Look, I didn't mean to offend you or anything, it's just me expressing myself," I shrugged and pressed the button for the penthouse, not caring we were going to pass up my floor.
She glanced at the buttons. "How'd you know I lived in the pent house?" She asked quietly, seemingly ignoring my almost apology.
I shrugged. "You're very famous." I shrugged again, her doing it at the same time as I did. I laughed quietly, causing her to glance back at me before the doors dinged open, the door to the penthouse appearing in front of us.
She stepped out of the elevator, grabbing a pair of keys from her purse. Just as the doors were about to close, I reached out, making them fly back apart. "Hey, wait," she turned back around to face me, leaving the keys dangling from the key hole, "I'm sorry. It was a Vlog, I didn't really mean anything by it."
Eleanor chuckled at me, pushing me back by my head into the elevator. She set her foot on the motion detector and played around inside her purse before grabbing something and pulling it out. To my surprise, it was the twenty six euros I'd refused. "Thank you for your apology," she tucked the money into my jacket pocket before taking her foot from the detector.
Before I had a chance to respond, she'd pressed the button for my floor and the machine lurched alive, closing the doors quickly and taking me down. I sighed and grabbed the money from my pocket, making sure it didn't soak in my wet jacket. And my second surprise today appeared, on the ten euro bill I'd given to her, written in cursive, in pencil of course, on a sticky note stuck to the money, was her number.
'Call me sometime, I'd love to hang out nice channel btw (:' was written just underneath it and I smiled. So she knew about my channel, I thought as the elevator stopped. I stepped out and happily walked back to my door, thinking about what to do with the number now that I had it.
