The Only Reason || Harry Styles ||

Chapter 5

The evening, as expected, passed by without anything special. It’s always like this every day. But there’s a part of me that expects something. Something new.

It was now 7:45. I was sat on the couch reading until Cliff sat beside me, an appropriate space between us, and spoke.

“Where’s dad?” he asked.

My eyebrows suddenly creased.

“You serious? You’re asking me where dad is?” I looked at him with great bewilderment.

“What? I just thought you might have a clue.” he shrugged then let out an audible ‘duh’.

I scoffed. “Well, I don’t and I think I will not for the next few years.”

“Why is that?” he asked with raised inquisitive eyebrows.

The unmanageable scoff left my mouth once again and said, “The question is: when will you start telling me… things.”

“What kind of things?” he asked pulling out his phone from his pocket and started tapping on it.

“Like what kind of job are you in and dad too? I mean am I not supposed to know this?I’m still part of this family.”

Everything was silent. No object in the house seemed to make any kind of noise until Cliff’s phone started ringing.

Standing up, he said, “You’ll find the answers to that...” he started walking away to the front door and mumbling, “...soon.” silently but I heard it clearly.

I was left sitting on the couch stunned. What the hell did he meant by that? Shit. If that damn phone just didn’t ring all of the sudden I might get some of the answers I yearned to know. I have to know what they’re doing. They’re still my family, isn’t it? They’ve been hiding this for years. I have to know what’s happening.

~*~

I found myself sat in a coffee shop just blocks away from our house. I’ve been mulling over about what I thought earlier. Do I wanna know? Do I wanna know all? By the sound of Cliff’s tone when he said I’ll find the answers to what I’ve asked earlier, appear kind of creepy and spine-chilling. Do I really want to know?

Yes, you need to know. A small voice inside my head told me.

I’ve been sitting on the same spot since I came here drinking hot coffee and enjoying the warmth it gave me. It was so refreshing. The coldness of the weather outside didn’t affect me at this moment. I just want to relax. Forget all the unanswered questions in my head.

I was staring blankly, twiddling the paper cup with both my hands when a dark figure sat across me, occupying the seat in front of me across the table. My neck straightened to look at the man sat just a foot away from me. He doesn’t look familiar. I have no idea who is he.

“Hello.” he smiled.

Now I started to get a bit scared.

“Hi…?” I greeted shyly, not wanting to let him see how petrified I am by his presence.

“How are you?” he smiled, lifting his elbows to place it above the table, resting his arms and hands on it, crossed. He was wearing a white t-shirt with a big yellow smiley face on it. I must say, he looks hot with his bottom lip pierced and his quiffed blonde hair. He’s quite attractive.
But I’m not letting that get on the way and let my guards down.

“Um… do I know you?” I smiled timidly with my brows furrowed. As for me, I was wearing a baggy grey sweater, black leggings and my white converse. My hair was tied in a messy bun and my face was pale without makeup.

I was getting a little confident right now. I surprise myself.

“Oh yeah.” He laughed. “I’m Luke Hemmings, by the way.” he pulled out his right hand to me, smiling brightly.

“Max McNaire.” I shook his hand and reciprocated his smile.

Did I just tell him my name? Yeah. Oh God.

“Lovely.”

“Thanks.”

After that, we engulfed in an uncomfortable silence. It’s very rare for me to meet someone especially a boy. My view of them still doesn’t change. But he looks innocent. He doesn’t look harmful like I always see others. The only male I ever talk to were my father, Cliff, and Mr. Styles. Well, as far as I know. I might add him on the list. He just doesn’t look like he’s going to hurt me. So I broke the awkward silence.

“Is Luke a short for something? Lucas, isn’t it?” I asked. I don’t even know why I asked a question like that. It just came out from my mouth.

“Yeah, it is.” He laughed.

“Mine too. It’s short for Maxine.” I smiled.

“I know.” he chuckled bowing his head.

“What?”

“Nothing.” he smiled unbending his neck to look at me.

I laughed nervously and spoke, “You know?”

“I- I heard your name before but I never knew what you look like until now.” He smiled once again. Does this boy doesn’t know anything but smile? It’s cute though.

“Where?” I asked curiously.

“I don’t really remember.” He shrugged then continued, “Um… do you think I could get your number?” he asked.

Whoaw.

Sensing a little bit of y hesitancy, he continued. “It’s okay if you don’t want to. I just-“

“No. It’s fine. Here.” I cut him off then I gave him my phone. He looks innocent so I gave him. It wouldn’t get me into harm, right? And this is a first step to change my viewpoint of boys. And I did it without the help of others. Well, I would be happy if El can join me. But I’m also glad that I did it myself.
