Alex's P.O.V

I patted down my hair, staring at Effie Trinket, District's 12 escort, standing on the stage in front of the children, ages 12-18, a pool of terrified faces around the square. And there I stood playing with my fingers praying that I wouldn't be called.

The screech of the microphone echoed through the square and everyone scrambled to cover their ears. "Welcome, one and all!" Effie exclaimed happily. As she did her little speech I looked over to my best friend Luke wondering how he was feeling after all he had his name put in more than 32 times and I felt bad for him but he only did it for his family. I didn't realize how much time had passed that now Effie was walking towards the bowl full of names, with 28 of them containing my name.

Effie's nimble fingers plucked out a single strip and I dug my nails Into my palms, praying, hoping she didn't say me. "The female tribute for District 12 this year is..... Alex Mellark" She said.

My heart stopped. A lump in my throat. My knees locked in place. This can't be real, can it? I can't be tribute. Someone must be playing a joke on me, right?

Wrong.

"Well come on up dear" Effie said, as I made my way up the stage really slow, taking the female part next to Effie I looked over my mother and saw sadness all over her face, I felt like the whole world was in my shoulders as I tried holding back my tears.

"And the Male tribute is....Luke Hemmings!" Effie said. Oh No I thought not Luke please, Why him? Seeing him walk up the stage broke my heart he's been my best friend since I was 10 and now here we are as The 68th Hunger Games tributes.

After we said our goodbyes to our families me and Luke were escorted to a room where Effie turned the T.V for us so we could see the other tributes and learn their names they were:

• District 1: Liam Payne and Alice Carse (Both 18)
• District 2: Ashton Irwin and Mona Irene (18,14)
• District 3: Harry Styles and Livvie Reid (17,15)
• District 4: Louis Tomlinson and Callie Jacobs (18,15)
• District 5: Calum Hood and Nina Low (16,17)
• District 6: Niall Horan and Laney Brown (17,14)
• District 7: Michael Clifford and Porcelain Ramsay (17,17)
• District 8: Hayes Grier and Carmen James (14,14)
• District 9: Austin Mahone and Kimberly Reed 16,17)
• District 10: Cameron Dallas and Daisy Danes (18,18)
• District 11: Zayn Malik and Bree Jones (18,17)
• District 12: Alex Mallark and Luke Hemmings (15,16)

I counted the ages most of them were older than me and probably better all I could do was shoot a bow, and that's it. In other words, the odds were not in my favor.
