The Voice

42. Morning Surprise

After they all quietly freaked out and wished me happy birthday, giving me hugs of their own, we decided it would be best if we all went back to sleep.

I slept better than I had in a really long time.

When Harley began barking like crazy, I immediately jumped out of my bed, ready to kill whoever was in here, whoever made him bark and growl like he was.

Until I saw Brinley, her eyes wide as she held her hands up in surrender. Then I just wanted to slap her.

I was in a very good mood, though, so I didn’t let her bother me as I yanked the covers off and started to stand. “What do you want? I need to get ready.”

She snorted. “It may be your birthday, but that doesn’t make you special. We have rehearsals before the show.”

I rolled my eyes and picked up a still growling Harley. “How did you even find out it’s my birthday?”

She just ignored me like a little whore and left, without answering my question. That made me curious, so very carefully, I walked downstairs in my pajama glory. Sure, they were cute—a white camisole and some short white cotton shorts with hot pink and lime green polka dots—but still.

Adam, Blake, Christina, Jesse, Emma, Chris, Harry, Louis, Liam, Zayn, and Niall were all dressed in party hats in the kitchen, which was covered in decorations.

Then, on the computer behind them were Max, Dad, Kiley, Noah, and Madi.

I immediately turned the brightest shade of red. “Oh God. I’m going back to bed.”

Harley would’ve been barking, but he was too excited to see Chris again. Literally, he was yelping in excitement while Chris laughed and knelt down to pet him. It was so cute, and despite my embarrassment, I waddled over to give him a tight hug.

“What are you guys doing here?” I asked, and I looked over to the computer. “And you guys? I told you! It’s not a big deal.”

“You’re eighteen,” Harry snorted. “Of course it’s a big deal!”

Kiley laughed the loudest. “Suck it up, Everit! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!”

I made a face at her and turned to head upstairs. “You know, you could’ve warned me at least. I’m in here in my pajamas.”

Adam was laughing at me as he hugged me. “Naw, Everit. You know we don’t care. Happy birthday, my favorite Irish person in the world.”

Niall gaped at him. “I thought I was your favorite Irish person!”

“You were, but then you stole Everit from me and wouldn’t give her back!” he exclaimed, and my eyes were wide as I turned to look down to my toes. “I wanted her so bad.”

“I did too!” Niall reminded him, and he actually stuck his tongue out at him. “I got her, so ha!”

Adam pouted and walked over to Blake, who was there to hug him for his fake sorrow. “Blake, he’s mean to me.”

Christina rolled her eyes and looked over to Louis. “Do you have to put up with this all the time too?”

Liam smirked at her while the other four nearly died laughing, and I couldn’t help but laugh a little myself. She was asking Louis that, the one who was probably like Adam in most situations.

“Louis’s the Adam of our lives,” Liam explained when she looked very confused.

I sighed and walked over to the table, and to my delight, Chris noticed and came over to sit beside me. I took the computer over with me to sit down, though it was very difficult to talk to all five people.

“I’ll do this one by one,” I laughed. “Kiley, how are you?”

She grinned. “I’m fabulous. Absolutely wonderful.”

My eyebrows furrowed, but when I saw Max look away from the camera while Dad laughed, my
eyes shot wide open. “Oh my gosh! What aren’t you telling me?”

“Nothing,” Max mumbled while Noah and Madi, who were on one screen I might add, began laughing hysterically.

Kiley gave me a sheepish smile. “Nothing?”

“You’re such a liar!” I exclaimed. “Why am I out of the loop here?”

“We didn’t wanna distract you!” Kiley insisted. “You’re so busy and all.”

My eyes were still wide. “This is still huge! Guys, you’re supposed to tell me these things!”

“You would’ve overreacted, like you’re doing right now!” Max insisted, and Chris started laughing at me so hard.

I pouted. “I wouldn’t have overreacted.”

“We just went on one date,” Kiley informed me. “And sure, we’re going on another, but still! It was one date, and it was lots of fun.”

My eyebrows furrowed. “Wait. I’m confused. You live in Boston.”

She smiled innocently again. “I kind of moved. My dad got relocated to Huntsville, so we’re living in Hartselle now.”

“You’ve been gone a week, and you’ve managed to move thirty minutes away from me and start dating my best friend?” I laughed. “Very nice.” I then looked to Madi and Noah’s screen. “How did your date go, by the way?”

Madi got this huge smile while Noah looked over to her with shining eyes. “Splendid, of course. Everit, you need a boyfriend. Triple dates are imminent.”

Chris smirked. “I got first dibs.”

Kiley sighed. “That’s right, he did.”

I laughed and used every ounce of willpower I had in me to keep myself from looking over at
Niall. “What do you want me to do?”

“Uh, find a man?” Kiley teased. “I thought that was obvious.”

I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, okay. Let me just go look through my closet. Maybe I’ll find one in Narnia.”

Madi’s mouth fell wide open. “He’d be the best guy ever! Go try that!”

And that was how that morning went—video chatting with those crazy people, spending time with all the crazy people who came to see me, and just enjoying my first day of being eighteen.

Then, after everyone left, we were left on our own. On my way up to my room, I was thinking about how interesting it was that in order to live forever, Niall and I had to keep each other alive with our own blood.

Lyrics began swarming around in my head, in just an instant, and I bolted for my room. No one was around, so no one noticed, but after just an hour, I had a brand new song—a love song that made me smile from ear-to-ear.

I called it Let Me Go, and I loved the song very much. It was the first duet I had ever written, and in my opinion, it rocked.

It was the best birthday ever.

I wasn’t really nervous this time. Brinley was freaking out, which made me laugh. She claims I have nothing on her, yet she was freaking out when it was time to get ready.

Me? Nah. I literally danced around most of the time, though my hair took some time.

My favorite song I was dancing to was a new Selena Gomez song, the one she wrote for her twenty-first birthday celebration. It was pretty different from the Selena Gomez typical, but it was awesome to dance to, and I mean, it was my birthday.

So, I was dancing and singing to that song while getting ready.

“Tell ‘em that it’s my birthday,” I sang as I spun around in my underwear after finishing the interesting hairstyle. It was a clipped up and twisted bun, quite wild and crazy with the natural curls of my hair, and at the top, it was teased up quite a bit. It was really cool, and for an added effect, I added a spiked hairpiece to the side so that it looked more like rock than anything.

I decided to do something different for my attire, as a sort of . . . tribute to the band whose songs I was singing. I had on a red skater skirt, black suspenders, and a striped tank top, and to go with it, I was wearing a pair of black hidden wedges. To add some Everit flavor, I put in a pair of spiked diamond earrings.

For my makeup, I put on some darker red lipstick and some pretty different eye shadow. I was always one to put on more than I did when just, ya know, walking around, but it was darker than usual.

Once all ready to go, I put my ear buds in, kissed Harley goodbye, and danced my way downstairs. It wasn’t surprising that they were all downstairs waiting—aside from Niall, of course—but I was surprised that Brinley was also already down there.

She groaned. “Well look who finally decided to get ready.”

“Oh shut up,” I snorted. “We have to wait on you every week.”

“Because unlike some people, I actually take the time to look good,” she said, giving me a smirk.

I smirked right back at her. “Coulda fooled me.”

Once again, instead of responding, she just rolled her eyes and walked outside to the SUV. The guys started following after her, laughing quietly to themselves, but Harry actually turned and gave me a small fist pump.

“I hate that girl,” he groaned. “This week has been absolutely dreadful. You can imagine rehearsals weren’t pretty.”

I snorted. “I feel sorry for you guys.”

He pouted. “It wasn’t fun.”

“I bet.”

Notes

The lyrics are from Birthday by Selena Gomez. :)

Hope you guys enjoy! Sorry it takes me so long to update. I'm horrible, I know. :\ I'm trying to slow the updates down so I can get some chapters written on The Tour, but with all my other things I'm writing and all the things I've got going on in life right now...I'm just slacking hard. I'm sorry. x3

Check out Everit's outfit here! :)

Hope you guys like this fun chapter. :)

Noah’s lips pressed together. “Have you ever thought about the fact that maybe ‘cooties’ was just a warning word for ‘STD,’ or is that just me?” Now am using that when people say cooties

You seriously wrote about my two favorite things. The Voice and One Direction : ). And the song she auditioned with is amazing. Sick Puppies are awesome
