The Voice

28. All Before Breakfast

I was surprised when someone knocked on my door . . . before seven in the freaking morning.
Honestly, I wondered if it was Niall trying to get in a morning kiss before someone else woke up.

Just the thought made my heart race, and in a single second, I stood beside my door and pulled it open, my sleepy eyes hopeful.

Nope. It was Noah, smirking as he noticed the hope leave my eyes. “Expecting someone else?”

“What do you want?” I scowled.

“Niall called a morning meeting,” he said.

I snorted. “He hates the mornings. What’s the occasion?”

He shrugged. “Not really sure. He just woke me up after spending ten minutes outside of your door deciding if he should wake you up first or not. So, instead, he woke me up and asked my opinion.”

That, despite the fact my hopes had been let down, made me laugh. “Sounds like something he would do.”

He just smiled, and to my surprise, he ruffled my hair. “Maybe waking you up isn’t allowed, but you’re the first one I woke up. He might need some help with breakfast.”

I bit my lip and casually snuck past him with Harley happily following behind me. When he saw Noah, he started scratching at his legs for him to pick him up, so of course, he did. Noah just gestured for me to hurry, and at the fastest human pace I could without looking stupid, I quietly moved down the stairs and into the kitchen.

Niall was in the middle of making a plate of pancakes when I slid on the counter. I knew he had seen or heard me because he was smiling, even brighter when he turned to put them on the island beside me. “Well good morning to you, Evie.”

“Good morning,” I said, smiling from ear-to-ear as he pulled my face in for a gentle kiss. It wasn’t super passionate and crazy, no hormones raging wild. This was an intimate dance between the lips of lovers, a marvelous encounter that not only left more to be desired but also allowed a bit of closure.

Even knowing it may be the last kiss we got to share for a while, a good while, I smiled as he pulled away. He was, too, all things considered.

“Need any help?”

“I’m almost done,” he disagreed. “Thank you, though. Where’s Harley at?”

That made me laugh. “Noah showed up, and he wanted to be spoiled some more. So, Noah’s
carrying him room to room as he wakes everyone up.”

“Not anymore!” Kiley announced very excitedly as she made her descent down the stairs and into the kitchen, proudly holding an excited Harley in her arms as he tried to kiss her face. “Good morning, lovelies. That smells good, Niall. I was hoping for some Everit cooking, though.”

Niall grinned sheepishly. “I was gonna wake her up first, but I decided that might not be a good idea. So I asked Noah, and he agreed.”

“Poor Niall,” she teased, laughing as he pouted a little. I mean, his eyes were big and full of cute sadness while his bottom lip poked out. “Don’t even try that on me! I have nieces and nephews. Try Everit. She’s got Max.”

I made a face at her because even when the face wasn’t directed at me, I was already caving, and I wasn’t the one doing anything. “Uh, I’m gonna go grab my phone.”

Kiley laughed. “Yes! Niall, that look will definitely work.”

I scowled all the way up the stairs, enough that I didn’t notice when I nearly ran right into Brinley. Apparently the decent girl from last night was gone because she nearly pushed me down the stairs to shove past me.

“That’s cool. I’m not walking.”

She just flipped me off behind her back and walked . . . in her t-shirt and underwear . . . into the kitchen. I was absolutely livid about that, to the point my fists were balled up like tight snowball—same color and everything—but Noah and Madi approaching helped calm me down enough that I continued up to my room to do what I originally planned to do.

I started to get on Twitter, but I thought better of it and instead hurried down the stairs—at my superhuman speed, until I was in sight—back into the kitchen. Brinley could wear what she wanted, but she was not going to flirt like crazy.

Apparently she had a different idea in mind.

She was twirling loose strands of hair around her finger, smiling sexily at Niall. “Whatcha making for us, Nialler?”

Niall’s eyes tightened, only slightly, before he turned back to her with a fake smile and a plate full of bacon. He set it in-between the pancake and egg plates. “Breakfast. Everyone eat up. We’ve gotta talk about next week.”

“Right to business then,” Madi laughed. “I kinda like that.”

Niall smiled sheepishly. “Well, we have five days, and you have to prepare three songs in five days. So, I mean, we need to get started as soon as possible.”

“Definitely agree there,” Brinley said, and when she looked over at me and saw I could see her obvious flirting, a devious spark flashed across her eyes. “So, Niall, here’s a random question. Totally random, for curious purposes and all. Say one of us wins, and we get to go on tour with you and your band. Would you ever date the winner if you just so happened to like her? Assuming it’s one of the four girls.”

He actually choked on the orange juice he was drinking, eyes wide, while Kiley gaped at her.
Madi snorted and slowly shook her head while Noah shot her a look from the deep depths of hell.

Brinley shrugged her shoulders. “I wasn’t asking for myself. We wouldn’t work, I don’t think. It was for Everit’s sake.”

It was all I could do not to crush my phone in my hands, but I couldn’t help the way my eyes practically narrowed to slits as I glared at her. “Okay. With that note, I’m gonna go play in traffic. Someone come get me when it’s time for the meeting?”

As I began heading upstairs, I heard Brinley call, “Traffic’s the other way!”

“Brinley, just stop it!” Madi yelled at her. “We all get it. She’s in love with Niall. Leave it the crap alone! He can’t answer that question because it crosses the boundaries that are up now! Leave Everit alone! From the day you saw her audition, you’ve been out to get her! News flash, she’s a million times better than you. She showed that when she not only got in the top of this team, but the top of all four teams. You got what? In the top five on this team. Deflate your ego and grow up already! You’re, what, twenty? She’s seventeen. Feel better about yourself? She acts like a better and much more mature person when she’s fighting back than you ever have. Let’s not even take into consideration what she does when she’s being nice to you! That takes a lot for her; trust me. Now you constantly reminding our coach of the awkwardness she’s tried to avoid? That doesn’t help anyone, but especially not you. Get off your high horse and let the music do the talking, ‘cause I’m sick of you doing it.”

It was all I could do to cover my mouth before I let out a squeal, but I think it was coming out anyways as I hurried up to my room and quickly shut my door behind myself. I wasn’t sure if Niall heard that, but I knew he would hear me turn my iPod on as I began dancing happily around my room. It wasn’t my dance playlist. Just my songs on here.

The first song that came on was Now by Paramore. When I felt my phone vibrate in my hand, I just sang along instead of dancing and unlocked it to see what it was going on.

It was a text from Max.

Max: EVERIT! GET ON TWITTER! NOW!

That was very surprising to me, but I didn’t question it and instead pulled up my Twitter. There were lots of retweets of what I said . . . or that’s what I thought at first glance. As I scrolled down a bit, I realized that wasn’t the case.

It was people retweeting what Chris Evans said back to me.

@MaxGuthery-17 @EvieEbbs Maybe we should change that! My plane lands in LA this afternoon. Why don’t we do lunch tomorrow?

You better believing I was squealing at the top of my lungs as I busted out of my room and began stumbling down the stairs, shaking with excitement as I practically threw my phone at Madi. She seemed surprised by the chibi Hawkeye phone case, but she didn’t linger on that and instead looked at the screen.

“Tell me I’m not just imagining this!”

Her eyes were wide as she saw what I did. “Holy shit! Is this for real!?”

“That’s what I’m trying to figure out!” I exclaimed, and I then handed the phone to Niall. “You’re probably way better at this. Is this for real?!”

He was laughing the entire time as he read it, nodding, too. “It’s real, Everit. You gonna go?”

“That’s a dumb question!” Madi snorted. “She’d be crazy not to!”

Kiley and Noah both took the phone from Niall and began trying to read it at the same time. I think Kiley was successful first because she let out an excited squeal. “That’s the real Chris Evans?”

Brinley’s eyes were wide in horror. “What’s going on?”

“Chris Evans invited Everit to lunch!” Kiley exclaimed. “What does this even mean? How did this happen?”

“I don’t know!” I insisted. “Max said something last night about it, asking if I had met him, and I said sadly no, my fan girl moment hadn’t been lived yet. Then, Max just texted me and told me to check Twitter. So I did. This is what I found.”

Noah continued looking at it. “Ev . . . what you said to Max was retweeted like crazy. I don’t know who did it, but his wall was literally blown up with that.”

“What do I do?” I asked with wide eyes. “I mean, obviously I go, but, I mean, dear goodness. I can’t go! I’d be totally crazy!”

“You’d be totally crazy not to!” Madi insisted. “You’d be able to watch Captain America and the Avengers and think, ‘Yep. Saw that butt in person.’”

My cheeks were burning. “Okay.”

Noah surprised me when he threw me my phone back. “You’re getting a call.”

I didn’t recognize the number, but knowing Dad, it was probably him changing numbers again.
So, I took a deep breath and prepared to talk to Dad calmly as I explained what was going on.

“Hello?”

“Is this Everit Eberly?” a familiar voice asked, and when he laughed, my eyes grew wide in recognition. “I’m really sorry. This seems creepy. I just . . . I’m not really a big Twitter person, and when my plane landed in Dallas for a layover, I decided I didn’t wanna spend all day on Twitter, so I just contacted your friend via Twitter and asked if he could connect me to you faster. Is this creepy?”

“Not at all,” I breathed, eyes wide as I looked up at Niall, who was giving me a curious grin. “I just got the tweet, actually.”

That made him laugh a little, nervously I might add. “Well, I just think it’d be a lot of fun. To be honest, I didn’t really know who you were when I looked at my page and saw hundreds of retweets of your own tweet. God, this sounds messed up.” And he laughed again, only briefly. “Well, I kinda researched you to see who you were, and I realized you’re just a normal girl in a beyond normal situation. So, I decided it’d be refreshing to talk to people down to earth, you know? So . . . what do you say? Lunch date?”

“That sounds great,” I said, but it was a bit hard to get out. “Uh, I guess I should ask when and where?”

“Well, I was thinking around noon tomorrow at LA Café. Do you know where that is?” he asked.

“I don’t, but I can figure it out,” I assured him. “That sounds like a plan.”

“I’m actually excited,” he informed me. “I’ve never done anything like this before, so this is new for me.”

“Well what a coincidence,” I said, and I laughed a little. “Me either.”

That made him laugh, too. “Well, Everit, it was nice talking to you. It’s good to meet you. I will see you tomorrow around noon.”

“Sounds good,” I agreed. “Bye.” I actually squealed as I hung up my phone, so it fell out of my hands and onto the floor. “That was him.”

“We figured that,” Kiley laughed. “What did he say? Where are you meeting?”

“LA Café at noon tomorrow,” I said before doing a tiny happy dance. “Only two more things could make my life complete after tomorrow. Then, you can just kill me now.”

Noah laughed at how spastic I was acting right now. “What are the other two?”

“Sing with Hayley Williams, which I know will never happen, and get married,” I admitted, and when his eyebrows rose at the last one, I gave him a sheepish smile. “My dad said the second best thing that happened to him was when he married my mom, so I kinda wanna know if it’ll be the best for me.”

Madi’s eyebrows furrowed. “Oh come on, Ev. You can’t tell me you’re not ever planning to have kids.”

I quirked my lips to the side and shrugged my shoulders. “I can’t, actually. Birth defect. Uh, not the point. I’m gonna go upstairs ‘til you guys are done eating and spend probably forever trying to decide what I can possibly wear tomorrow.”

Niall, despite a strange look in his eyes, smiled softly at me. “I’ll let Adam know. This week, you guys are all doing something different. You’re performing with the girls from Team Adam. Except for you, Noah, who will perform with the guys.”

Noah laughed and nodded. “Good to know. Now, Ev, go. If you want, we’ll help you decide later, okay?”

I just nodded, and with another quick squeal, I picked up my phone and very quickly began heading right back up the stairs. I could’ve sworn I heard Brinley mumble something about me under her breath, but I didn’t really care.

I was meeting Chris freaking Evans.

Notes

The lyrics are from Now by Paramore. :) I absolutely love Paramore.

Anyways, hope you enjoy! :D I have a deep love for Captain America and Hawkeye (hence the name :3) and I absolutely love Chris Evans as Cap. So I decided, hey. Why the hell not throw someone else in here? :3

:D

Another side note, next chapter? There's yet another new character introduced. Some of you may love her. Some of you may hate her. My opinion is not the opinion expressed in the next chapter. It's Everit's opinion, so please don't send me hate mail or tell me I'm stupid. Or start any kind of drama over the things said from now on about said person.

Even in the sequel, the said person isn't a good guy, but remember. This is a fan fiction. It doesn't mean that this is real or would really happen. To be completely honest, I'm pretty damn sure it wouldn't happen.

...I suppose that's enough rambling. x3 Just wanted to let everyone know that there's a character who I don't believe to be accurately portrayed in this story, but said character is portrayed this way for a reason. So don't hate me. :P

Just enjoy this chapter, and this rant will all make sense next chapter. x3

Noah’s lips pressed together. “Have you ever thought about the fact that maybe ‘cooties’ was just a warning word for ‘STD,’ or is that just me?” Now am using that when people say cooties

You seriously wrote about my two favorite things. The Voice and One Direction : ). And the song she auditioned with is amazing. Sick Puppies are awesome
