The Voice

25. Transition

I looked in the mirror one last time after Madi finished my hair. Kiley had done my nails, which she painted white and made adorable text faces with rosy cheeks. It was incredible how well she did, so when I did her nails while Madi did her hair, I felt bad that I couldn’t do as well as her.

We helped each other out. I insisted that I was last, just in case we ran out of time, and the only reason they agreed is because I reminded Madi that we had to get her looking perfect for Noah.
When Kiley tried to backfire that with me and Niall, I brought up Max.

She was red faced and shy about it, but she agreed to let me go last.

Either way, we had time. My hair was put in a curly and fancy bun. What hair was left down was actually curled a little to have the perfect ringlet curl. The bun, though fancy, was a bit messy with the natural ringlets I had, and to make it look even better than it already did, Madi brought out a headpiece she had nothing to wear with—a tiara. It wasn’t an actual tiara, not in my definition. It was one that was like a diamond headband, really. Either way, it completed the ensemble.

Kiley had also done my makeup. She really just put on silver eye shadow, but it was more of a metallic color than silver. She also put black eyeliner on the top and bottom of my eyelids, and she put on really awesome mascara that made my eye lashes pop. Also, I had on fairly bright pink lipstick. Not crazy bright, but brighter than I had ever worn.

When putting that on, she actually winked at me. “That way we’ll know if you kiss Niall.”

My cheeks were probably as red as Kiley’s lipstick. “I’m, uh, not gonna do that.”

Madi laughed a dark and devious laugh as she put the last bobby pin in my hair. “Uh huh. And next you’re gonna say it wasn’t you that did that to his lip.”

I buried my face in my arms while they continued to laugh at me. “He told you. He must’ve done that in his sleep.”

“Or he did it when he was in here making love to you,” Kiley suggested with a shrug of her shoulders.

That surprised me so much that my head shot up, my eyes wide open, as I gaped at her. “I-I-I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

She laughed at me now. “Uh huh. Not saying I’ve had a lot of it, but I know what sex sounds like. I used to walk past my brother’s room all the time when he had girlfriends over. That was definitely sex I heard going on in there.”

I looked down to my hands. “Does that make us bad people?”

“Of course not,” Madi said, and her eyebrows pulled together. “Why would that make you bad people? People in love do that a lot.”

“We both wanted to wait,” I admitted. “And, I mean, we had sex in the middle of this. Don’t you think that clouds his judgment?”

“The only thing it’s gonna do to him is give him a hard-on while he watches you stand up there on stage tonight,” Madi laughed deviously again before leaning down to kiss my cheek. “Ev, we’re competitors in this just like you, and if we really thought Niall wasn’t capable of putting his feelings for you aside, we would say so. He is, though, and when you win this, it won’t be Niall that got you there.”

“Why do you keep saying that?” I demanded. “You guys have as much of a chance as I do.”

“No we don’t,” Kiley disagreed, giving me a warm smile. “Only one person from Team Niall goes to the finals, and it’s gonna be you. Not saying we don’t have a chance at a career, but I don’t think it’ll come from winning this show.”

Madi nodded in agreement. “Don’t worry, though, dear. We’re happy for you, and we want this for you. But, for the sake of being able to win this, I think you and Niall should stop hanging out in each other’s rooms.”

“I keep trying to tell him that,” I assured her. “It’s just hard when he comes in and kisses me like he does sometimes.”

“Noah almost kissed me last night,” Madi informed me.

Kiley didn’t know either, so both of us were stunned beyond belief. We didn’t move for . . . two seconds, and when we did, Madi looked blood red in embarrassment. I let out a loud squeal while Kiley jumped up and down in excitement.

Besides being red faced, her hazel green eyes were wide. “Guys, stop it!”

We couldn’t, though, and of course, someone came knocking on my bedroom door very shortly after. I wasn’t surprised, but who I found waiting did surprise me.

It was Harry, and he looked very concerned. “Ev, I need you to come here for a minute. There’s something wrong with Niall.”

All excitement stopped right there, and Madi actually gasped a little. Instead of letting myself get too worked up and concerned about it, I just nodded and quickly rushed downstairs, faster than Harry could go.

What I saw was surprising. He said something was wrong with Niall, but he was rummaging through the refrigerator, just like usual. He, however, heard my almost silent entrance, and very quickly shut it back, his . . . red eyes wide.

I gawked at him. “Oh shit . . . .”

He smiled widely at me. “Hey there, Evie. I’m looking for something to eat to get this awful taste out of my mouth. It just came out of nowhere.”

“Niall, we have a serious problem,” I whispered, and I very quickly grabbed ahold of his hand.
He didn’t mind as I pulled him along behind me and into his bedroom, though he looked confused.

It was no surprise to find the guys all dressed up, but they were just as surprised as I had been to see Niall’s bright red glowing eyes.

He frowned at them. “What’s up with you guys? Why is everyone looking at me like that?”

And when I got him to the mirror in his bathroom, he saw it and freaked out, too. While he freaked out, I started pacing back and forth while my head swirled with all kinds of bad ideas on how to fix this, what to do.

I felt like I was shooting blanks.

“What’s happening to him?” Zayn asked, the words spilling out of his mouth nervously. “Ev, he can’t go out in public like this!”

“I know, I know,” I muttered as my teeth ground together. “I need one of you to do me the biggest favor ever. A couple of blocks from here is a CVS. Go in there and get blue eye contacts. It’s gonna be the only way he can come out at night.”

“How did this happen?” Niall whispered, leaning in close to the mirror to observe his eyes even better. While leaned close, he began separating his eyelids. “Evie . . . my eyes are so cool!”

“Niall, you don’t get what’s happening,” I groaned. “You’re in the middle of becoming just like me. I don’t know if you’re there yet, or if you’re gonna be there with what’s happened, but you understand what that means, right?”

“I don’t understand what you’re so worried about, no,” he laughed, eyes shining as he looked at me. “Evie . . . this is what I want. I told you that.”

I grimaced. “Niall, it’s gonna be harder and harder for you to stay away from me, and the more you’re around me, the more likely it is that the process will be finished. When it is, you literally can’t live without me. Which means there’s no hope in you doing what really needs to be done.”

He looked very confused. “How do you know?”

“I guess I technically don’t, but that’s the best hypothesis anyone’s ever come up with,” I sighed. “Makes the most sense, and it's been right so far.”

He frowned at me. “You act like you don’t want this to happen.”

I rolled my eyes. “Stop. You know that’s not true. It just doesn’t need to right now.”

Suddenly, despite the fact that wasn’t quite what he wanted to hear, his eyes lit up as a devious grin spread across his lips. “What would happen if I bit you right now?”

I shrugged. “I don’t really know. I’m not sure if I’m immune to it, but that would make sense since I, you know, constantly have it in my mouth, flowing through my body.”

He pouted. “That means you can’t bite me anymore . . . .”

“I don’t know that,” I reminded him. “Look, I’ve gotta get out of here. Whichever person left a few minutes ago will be back with the blue contacts. Don’t come out until you have them in, okay?”

“Okay,” he sighed, and when his bright red eyes met mine, I saw sadness in them.

I knew I couldn’t just walk out of there, so instead, I crossed the room carefully and kissed him softly. Not passionately, and not eagerly. It was soft and gentle, but it was enough to make him smile.

“I’m very excited,” I assured him, and to reinforce this truth, I gave him a bright smile. “I never thought I would let this happen, not until you came along, but now that it has, I’m very excited. The timing’s just a little off.”

He smiled sheepishly. “It’s my fault, isn’t it?”

I scrunched my nose and nodded. “Kinda, but also mine for letting it happen. So, it’s equally both of our faults. No more carelessness, okay?”

“Okay,” he agreed with a nod. “No more.”

When I turned, I realized that no one but Harry remained in here, which surprised me. He looked really worried, but I just gave him a sheepish smile. “He’s fine, really. Just . . . transitioning, I think.”

“How does this even happen?” he asked, and the thing I found relieving about his question was that it was pure curiosity. He wasn’t mad, judgmental . . . just curious. “You didn’t know it was going to, so how did it accidentally happen?”

Niall’s eyes widened in horror. “Oh. I . . . shit.”

I winced. “You sure you wanna finish that?”

“Receiving your body fluids,” Niall whispered, voice raspy. “When I . . . .”

“What did you do?” Harry asked, and as he looked to Niall, his eyes widened. “Please tell me you’re both still virgins.”

Niall grimaced. “Just hang on a second, Harry, okay?”

Harry’s mouth fell open. “Are you kidding me? Niall, we told you the plan was to have nothing going on so that later, when you were asked about it, you wouldn’t have to lie!”

“It would’ve been a lie anyways!” Niall insisted. “Saying nothing was going on between us is a lie, whether we kiss, fuck each other’s brains out, or do nothing. The feelings we have, Harry, are considered something going on between us.”

He groaned and began pacing a little. “If this gets out . . . .”

“There’s only two other people who know,” I assured him. “They’re not saying anything.”

Niall frowned at me. “Who did you tell?”

“I didn’t tell anyone,” I promised. “Kiley knew, and she brought it up around Madi. They don’t think it matters, though.”

“You two got really lucky,” Harry informed us, his eyes still slightly widened. “Look, as much as I hate keeping secrets, for now, no one else needs to know about this. Not Noah, Liam, Zayn, or Louis, okay? This is between the three of us. And Madi and Kiley. But you guys have to stop.”

“I know,” I said. “We determined that a long time ago, but we can’t do this by ourselves. We’re gonna need your help, Harry. Any time you see him trying to come in there with me, stop him. Or vice versa. It’s like . . . gravity. I can’t just stay away. I always come back, and when he comes to me, I can’t stop him.”

Harry smiled at me. “That’s why I’m very happy for the two of you. I will help you, but you have to try, okay?”

“We will,” Niall promised. “Thank you, Harry.”

“Mmhmm,” he nodded, and right about that time, Zayn, Louis, and Liam all came hurrying in here, box of contacts and contact solution in hand.

They were all breathless, but Liam was the first to speak. “Here. Put them in, and hurry up. The SUVs are here.”

Notes

The lyrics are from Hold On by the Jonas Brothers. Of the few songs of theirs I love, this is probably my favorite. :)

Here you guys go! It was so hard not to say anything when previously mentioned that Niall should become like Everit. Or when someone asked if it would have an effect on Niall. x3 Like I said, I'm horrible with secrets. x3

I hope you guys enjoyed this chapter! :) There are quite a few more to come.

Wait! Actually! This is the halfway point! I totally forgot about that. :) There's a prologue, fifty chapters, and an epilogue. So, as far as chapters go, this is the halfway point. :D

Then, of course, there's a sequel. x3 But I'm not finished with that one. It's . . . a working progress.

Either way, enjoy this! Let me know what you think. :)

Also, Everit's outfit can be seen here. :)

Noah’s lips pressed together. “Have you ever thought about the fact that maybe ‘cooties’ was just a warning word for ‘STD,’ or is that just me?” Now am using that when people say cooties

You seriously wrote about my two favorite things. The Voice and One Direction : ). And the song she auditioned with is amazing. Sick Puppies are awesome
