The Voice

18. Morning Surprises

I was woken up the next morning to Harley getting so excited that I thought he would explode. It took about two seconds to figure out who it was.

Sure enough, there was Niall in my doorway, but he wasn’t alone. Actually, all of his band mates were there, laughing as I very quickly woke up, eyes wide.

“Uh . . . hi,” I mumbled, not really sure what to say. “Do you need something?”

Niall scowled. “I say no. They say yes. Difference of opinion, really.”

“You are very kinky,” Harry laughed, and he began gesturing to Niall’s shoulder. “Are you some sort of vampire?”

I snorted. “No. I’m way cooler.”

Louis cocked an eyebrow at me. “Oh? How so?”

I stood up and gestured for them to come in. Niall was hesitant, but he did it anyways. They didn’t understand what I was doing when I led them into the bathroom, but when I turned the lights out and they saw how my hair and eyes literally glowed, they began freaking out.

Liam was the first to acknowledge it. “I so have dibs.”

“Pretty sure I said it first,” Harry disagreed.

Niall snorted. “Guys, I so got you beat.”

“As a matter of fact, I’m pretty sure it was Harry,” Zayn reminded him, and my eyes were wide as I flipped the lights back on. Zayn just laughed at me. “What? You don’t think we playfully call dibs on our most attractive fans?”

My eyebrows furrowed. “I never really thought about it ‘cause I don’t consider myself to be in that category.”

Harry stuck his tongue out at Niall before tightly hugging me against him. “See? She’s totally mine. She can be kinky with me anytime.”

That made me laugh. “You would probably like how kinky I can be.”

Niall groaned. “I’m leaving. Right now.”

I smiled sheepishly. “Well, you seemed to like it.”

“That’s precisely why I’m leaving,” he sighed, and a small smile came to his lips as I stepped closer to him. “How much longer do we have? A month?”

I snorted. “You’re assuming that I’m gonna make it that far. Maybe not even that long.”

He cocked an eyebrow at me. “Now is it really that simple? I eliminate you now and get you, like, by the end of next week?”

My eyes were wide as the others gaped at him, but from the grin on his face, I knew he was only playing. And it made me laugh, when I knew it was a joke. “Sorry. I’d rather try and win this thing. Speaking of which, I need to change. So . . . I need you guys to go out. But be careful. Brinley’s awake. Still in her room, so you can sneak out now.”

Liam was the first to look at me strangely, but the others—aside from Niall—were quick to follow suit. “How do you know this?”

“Long story,” I murmured. “I promise I’ll explain later.”

Niall laughed. “You sure about that?”

“No,” I admitted, shrugging my shoulders a little. “But I may not have a choice. I’ll think about it some more while y’all are leaving and letting me change.”

Harry smirked at me. “Feisty. I like you.”

I smiled at him. “Thank you. I’m really quite strange, and when I tell you the truth, you probably won’t anymore.”

He frowned. “What? Are you some sort of vampire?”

“I already told you,” I said, and I began heading towards my door to open it for them. “I’m way cooler.” When I opened the door, all five of those crazy boys left. Harley even left with them, which made me smile.

He apparently knew they were good, too.

I was dressed and ready for whatever the day had to offer within ten minutes. Sporting a pair of black studded denim shorts, a dark grey Batman t-shirt, my black and yellow Batman hat, my Batman necklace, my Batman rubber bracelet, and my Batman high-top converse, I began skipping out of my room. I had to pull my ponytail through the ponytail hole in my hat, but I was just surprised I didn’t trip down the stairs in the process.

“I have never seen so much Batman stuff in one outfit,” Noah informed me, surprising me with his presence as I entered the kitchen. Of course, the other five were down here eating cereal, and they looked at me, but I didn’t pay much attention to it and instead shrugged.

“You should see all the Captain America stuff I have,” I said, smirking as Niall started to laugh. “Honestly, guys, I’m gonna tell you my one fan girl weakness—well, two. If Chris Evans or Jeremy Renner walked through that door right now, I would probably pass out from excitement.”

Noah’s eyebrows furrowed. “The guys who play Captain America and . . . Hawkeye, right?”

I nodded quickly. “I—never mind. I really shouldn’t say that . . . .”

“Well, now we all wanna know,” Niall told me.

“There’s a lot I wanna know!” Harry informed me. “Why don’t I know yet? Please tell me everything.”

“I can’t tell you everything,” I said. “What I will tell you is that I find Captain America’s butt to be, like, perfect.”

They all busted out laughing while Niall just gaped at me. Though I felt kinda bad for saying it, I just sweetly smiled in his direction.

“I don’t know what it is,” I insisted, eyes on him. “It’s just . . . when I first saw that movie, it was late. Me and Max decided to go after one of his summer band practices, and when I saw it, I quickly elbowed him and was like, ‘Max . . . his butt is perfect.’ And to this day, I can’t help but not notice it every time I watch Captain America or the Avengers.”

“I definitely agree with that,” Madi informed us all as she made her way down the stairs. I knew she was coming—at least that someone was—so I was glad it was her. “It’s—whoa.”

Harry waved stupidly at her while Noah laughed at her expression. Liam, however, smiled warmly at her while Zayn and Louis waved with goofy smiles on their faces.

Niall laughed. “Madi, meet my mates. Harry, Liam, Louis, and Zayn. You and Noah over here were a little, erm, preoccupied, so you didn’t notice them, but they’re here, and they’ll be here for a couple of weeks. Lots of fun.”

Madi started to blush. “Uh, we were talking about—”

“Anything that came to mind,” I interrupted with a laugh. “Don’t worry, Madi. I understand.”

She gave me a funny look. “I thought you swore off boys.”

I shrugged. “I did. Still, Noah’s pretty great.”

Harry pouted from across the island. “Ev, you swore off guys? How am I supposed to woo you now?”

“Sorry,” I said with a sheepish smile, and I bounced over to the cabinets. “Boys are icky. They have cooties.”

Noah’s lips pressed together. “Have you ever thought about the fact that maybe ‘cooties’ was just a warning word for ‘STD,’ or is that just me?”

We all busted out laughing as someone else came downstairs—unfortunately, Brinley, who looked beyond surprised to see them here.

“Oh my—” And she surprised me when she cut herself off and hit my arm, eyes wide. “You just failed to mention they were here?”

My eyebrows rose as I turned to fully face her, waiting for her to hit me again. “We don’t talk. I don’t like you. You don’t like me. I’m really not coming in this early in the day and waking you up.”

She rolled her eyes. “Still being immature, I see. Whatever. I’ll be back.”

I opened my mouth to protest, but instead, I just took a deep breath and smiled. “Thanks for the warning.”

And while she stormed her way back up the stairs, Kiley came bouncing down to join us. She had actually seen them last night and had hung out with them, so she just smiled at them and waved. “Hey, guys. Cereal. Dude. I haven’t eaten cereal in a while. I want some.”

Niall laughed. “Cereal is the breakfast of champions.”

I frowned. “Well, my dad’s got it all wrong. He always said bacon was the breakfast of champions.”

“Why’d you have to mention bacon?” Niall teased. “Now I have to go to the store and get bacon because somebody used it all.”

I playfully hit Noah’s arm. “What’d you have to do that for? I like bacon. A lot.”

Noah’s eyes were wide. “I know! You eat it all when I make it.”

I shrugged and started looking through the fridge for some juice. Luckily, there was orange juice, so I very happily poured me a glass of that.

“Okay, there’s something I’ve been wondering about that I just have to ask,” Madi said, though her voice was quiet while she turned her head and peeked up the stairs for something—someone, probably. “Niall, are you just totally oblivious to the fact that Everit is in fact as in love with you as you are with her?”

My eyes were wide as Niall almost got choked up on his cereal, and of course, Harry, Liam, Noah, Louis, Kiley, and Zayn were laughing so hard that I’m surprised they didn’t break a rib or something. Niall, however, got his composure back before I did.

“Uh . . . .”

Well, I thought so anyways.

Madi had a devious grin on her lips. “So I was definitely right then.”

Louis was still laughing as he nodded. “You were so right.”

She smirked at me. “Sworn off boys are we?”

My face started burning as I slowly slid down to sit in the floor. “I’m gonna become a nun.”

Through his laughter, Noah stood from the table and walked around to slap Madi a high five. “You shouldn’t have had that girl talk last night when half-asleep. I tried to tell you.”

“I’ve never done that before,” I insisted. “I don’t have friends who are girls. Me and girls don’t get along. Girls suck.”

“Yeah they do,” Harry laughed, and we all busted out laughing at the mention of that.

I was the first to say anything after that, and that was because I was looking over the counter at them. “I don’t.”

Harry’s eyes and mouth were wide. “What?”

“You’re so mean,” Noah groaned.

Madi laughed. “Oh, just wait ‘til you hear her reasoning. She’s got a lot of sexual restrictions.”

“I’m sure she made that up,” Brinley snorted when she reentered the room dressed very stupidly and whoreishly.

The entire mood went downhill from there, but I wasn’t just going to let her get away with saying that.

“Says the girl who dresses like she should be on a street corner to try and get one of these six guys in here to sleep with you,” I retorted.

She gaped at me. “Really, Everit? Are you that immature?”

I actually laughed. “Don’t even talk to me about maturity. You stole my bathing suit top so Niall would think I’m a whore. You trashed my original outfit for the battle round performance. You are constantly telling me my boobs are fake, and I’m just a dirty whore when in reality, there’s nothing genuine about you. You act all tough and perfect, but when it comes down to it, you’re nothing to be afraid of. Maybe you can sing better than me, and maybe you’ll win this competition. Doesn’t matter. Honestly, more power to you. I’ll still be happy, no matter what, because I got this far. I don’t mean in this competition. I mean in life. I’m alive and happy and have people who genuinely care about me. I really hope you can say the same. But putting me down doesn’t make you any better.”

She didn’t even know what to say, so instead, she didn’t say anything. She just, once again, left the room, leaving me wide eyed and breathless while Madi, Kiley, and Noah all shared a secret high five and laugh.

It was hard to stand up as my knees began shaking, but I braced myself on the edge of the counter and took a deep breath. “Wow.”

“That was intense,” Louis noted. “I’m guessing no one really likes her.”

Kiley shook her head. “Honestly, if she would stop insulting people, she wouldn’t be that bad. I could deal with the rest of it, but her ego is too much for me.”

Niall surprised me when he, once again, snuck up on me. I guess this time it might’ve been because I was too shocked that I stood up to Brinley, once again, but after I jumped a little in surprise, he was wearing a sheepish smile as he put his empty cereal bowl in the sink beside me.

“Can I have a cookie?”

And somehow, that crazy boy made things better. While I was laughing and loving how happy he made me inside, my entire mind found peace, and I realized something.

What I said was true. I would be okay if she won because really, I had won. Niall wasn’t a competition or a trophy, but in the long run, I came into this competition and made friends. I met the love of my life, and I would bring out memories and relationships from this experience that I would carry with me for the rest of my life.

However long that may be . . . .

Notes

The lyrics are from They Just Don't Know You by Little Mix! :)

Check out Everit's outfit here! :)

Hey guys! So, I'm really enjoying the chapters with the rest of One Direction in here. :) I hope you are too!

Lemme know what you think! :) Thank you so much for reading this far, and I'm glad you've enjoyed it. It's different, definitely, but in my opinion, different is good. It stands from the rest, and sure, I'm not the greatest writer in the world--or that good in general, really--but I'm different. Which is good, in my opinion. :)

Noah’s lips pressed together. “Have you ever thought about the fact that maybe ‘cooties’ was just a warning word for ‘STD,’ or is that just me?” Now am using that when people say cooties
