16. Party It Up

As the week continued to roll along, everyone began getting more and more tense. Things around the house occasionally got awkward, but I mostly stayed to myself in my room unless I was cooking, talking to Noah and Madi, talking to Kiley, or practicing with Niall in my rehearsal with the camera crew. They were getting film of our tense moments, but something I love about this show is that they don’t show all the bull crap no one really cares about. Obviously it’s gonna get tense with all of us living under the same roof, but we always pull through by meal time.

When Saturday hit, everyone was so excited. It was rehearsals on the actual stage, so we were getting a good feel of the stage settings, such as acoustics and feel of the room. If you were wearing something that might change the way you perform for whatever reason—example, high heels—then you were encouraged to also wear something at least similar to stage rehearsals so you could get used to it.

It was a little nerve wrecking because every contestant from all teams was in here watching everyone because everyone was practicing. Surprisingly enough, Jesse hunted me down and sat with Noah, Madi, Kiley, and me. Caleb was still mad at me, I think, because he hadn’t really said anything to me since I told him I was wrong to like him.

Yeah. Actually liking him would’ve been wrong.

Each coach would tell you what to fix, tell you to watch something that might be pitchy, and have you run it again if necessary. So far, everyone had to run it at least once more because something went wrong.

Brinley’s performance scared me. Niall had her run through it a couple of times because she had to make sure a verse flowed well with what she was doing with her body. It was a good song, and she could sing it as high as Alanis Morisette. I definitely would’ve had to tone it down. The scary thing? She can sing fairly low, too.

She’s versatile. I’m not.

Unfortunately, though, I was right after her. For rehearsal spots, they randomly selected people’s names out of a hat, even if multiple people from the same team went back to back, and out of all of the thirty-two people still in this competition, I was selected dead last, with Brinley right in front of me. Therefore, I would have to go right after her in our performances in front of a crowd of musically inclined people. The songs were going from awesome and upbeat—depressing, but upbeat depressing—to happy and poppy.

I really hope this still works out.

I walked up and picked up the microphone, where I waited patiently for them to give me the okay. Instead of saying anything, I just tapped on it a bit to see if it was on. Of course, it was, so I just waited for the rest of the band to get ready. They had been going a while, but fortunately for them, I was the last one.

When they were set, the man starting my music and I gave each other the signal, and we began. It sounded much different in here, and when the piano came in, I was ready to start singing and dancing a little.

Despite how nervous I was, I carried the emotions of the song differently than last time. Instead of letting them destroy me, I let them carry me.

My performance started at the back of the stage with dimmed lights, but as the music picked up, so did the lights, and I started to step forward.

“I see you walking with a halo,” I sang with the right volume and excitement. I half expected to choke, but I didn’t. Even as I opened my eyes and let them drift to the audience of very talented people, I didn’t choke.

“Cover it up, yeah, cover it up, my baby
No need to try and be a hero
I've had enough, yeah, I've had enough, my baby

You got a little bit of Tarzan
Let it all out, yeah, let it all out, my baby

You see the thrill is in the chase
I wanna find out, I wanna find out, my baby

You're always so nice, I'm getting bored
You say the right things, I'm getting bored
And you always call first, I'm getting bored
Yeah, I'm getting bored.”

I felt really strange dancing. As much as I loved it, as I told Noah, I hated doing it in front of other people. The comfort I found was in knowing that they didn’t realize I came up with the dance on my own. The choreographers had a dance in mind, and I gave them the idea for my dance instead.

I didn’t wanna dance the whole song. Sure, I wanted to be moving and full of energy, but I didn’t wanna have backup dancers. I didn’t wanna have choreography.

It was all improv, and it was so much fun. I moved when I felt like it, spun around in circles, stepped down and made sexy faces towards the guitarist closest to me.

Admittedly, he was cute, but he had nothing on Niall.

“I’m so sick of the good boys
I need a wild boy, something unpredictable
Go ahead and be a caveman
Give me all your dirty love
I’ve no time for the right one
I need the wrong one, something unreliable
Go ahead and be a caveman
Give me all your dirty love

You wanna treat me like a lady
Don't even try, no, don't even try, my baby
Ain't gotta say that you need me
Keep it inside, yeah, keep it inside, my baby

I know I sound a little twisted
And maybe I am, or maybe I'm not, but baby
Playing the game is so addictive
Don't want it to stop, don't want it to stop, my baby

You're always so nice, I'm getting bored
You say the right things, I'm getting bored
And you always call first, I'm getting bored
Yeah, I'm getting bored

I’m so sick of the good boys
I need a wild boy, something unpredictable
Go ahead and be a caveman
Give me all your dirty love
I’ve no time for the right one
I need the wrong one, something unreliable
Go ahead and be a caveman
Give me all your dirty love.”

I felt a layer of sweat on my body, but I knew this part had to sell it for me. It took things slower, but that was where it had to be sexy and real. It had to go back to the girl Niall turned his chair around for, the one with the powerful vocals that could take a powerful song and nail it as good as the original artist.

Right now, I looked at the guitarist as I was being sexy—practicing, I suppose. I didn’t look right at him, but I did walk around him in a circle while I sang.

“Yeah
When you put your clothes back on
Something always feels so wrong
Baby, all I'm thinking of
Is I want your dirty love.”

As I hit those notes and sang them as Niall told me to, everyone started cheering. We had done it a couple of times for the people who did really awesome things that would be hard to beat, and I was one of those.

“I’m so sick of the good boys
I need a wild boy, something unpredictable
Go ahead and be a caveman
Give me all your dirty love
I’ve no time for the right one
I need the wrong one, something unreliable
Go ahead and be a caveman
Give me all your dirty love

I’m so sick of the good boys
I need a wild boy, something unpredictable
Go ahead and be a caveman
Give me all your dirty love
I’ve no time for the right one
I need the wrong one, something unreliable
Go ahead and be a caveman
Give me all your dirty love.”

It surprised me when everyone began cheering like they did. Out of respect for one another, we always listened and applauded when they were finished because we could put ourselves in their place. So, we always cheered.

This, however, was intense and very loud, surprising.

Adam was clapping as he walked by the stage, eyebrows raised. “You’re full of surprises, Everit. Just tell me. If it had been, say, Justin Bieber instead of Niall as the secret coach, would you have picked me?”

“I would have, Adam,” I said, and I knew I was blushing. Still, I stood ready for Niall to speak with a huge smile on my face.

Niall was hesitant, but when our eyes connected, I was very glad they did. There was so much joy and adoration in those eyes that it was all I could do to control myself—not to mention that devious flame that burned behind the pleased gaze. “Everit, that was . . . unbelievably awesome. Do you feel good?”

Very carefully, I exhaled sharply and smiled over at him. “I do.”

“You should,” he smiled. “That was incredible. I definitely like the personal touch you put there. If you’re comfortable with that on the stage and all, I think you’re good to go.”

Holy crap. That was the first time today that’s happened.

All of my friends were cheering for me as I made my way off the stage and back over to where they were. Jesse and Noah both stood to hug me tightly, whereas Madi just laughed and clapped while Kiley happy danced in her seat.

“I’m a little bummed, but I’m also pretty positive you’re going to the finals,” Kiley said, and my eyes widened in surprise. “What? I’m just being honest. I’m going to fight you and do my best to make it there myself, but it’s almost pointless with you.”

“I agree,” Madi sighed. “Still, we can’t give up. The better we do, the more likely we are to reach our dreams.”

Noah smiled down at her. “That’s a good way to look at it.”

After that, they began shutting the stage lights and stuff off, but the coaches all walked up there to talk to us all as one whole group.

“It’s a little sad for us to face this,” Christina started for them. “By Wednesday of next week, twelve of you will be gone. Six will be gone by this Wednesday.”

“That’s why we’re giving you the night off,” Blake said.

“Go hang out with other team members,” Adam suggested. “Make new friends besides the ones you already have. Party in LA!”

Niall started to laugh. “Have fun. Be safe. Don’t miss us too much. Most importantly, be safe and legal.”

“Staying legal is very important,” Blake agreed. “There’s no curfew, so you’re literally free to do whatever you want tonight.”

Christina smiled. “LA is very dangerous, though, so like the sexy Irish man close to me said, be safe.”

Niall struggled to not make a face at her comment, so I made it for him. When he saw the face I made, he got this huge smile that sent my heart on a marathon. While I struggled to remain calm and get my heart rate down, the coaches dismissed us.

Noah looked over at all of us with wide eyes. “Guys! What are we gonna do?”

I snorted. “I’m going back to the house, ordering a pizza, and partying there.”

“Come on, Ev!” Jesse groaned. “We’re in L-freaking-A! Let’s go partying! I’m sure there are clubs with men sexy enough for your hot Irish self.”

That made me laugh and blush at the same time. “I don’t care. I’m a l-o-ner! I don’t really do the whole ‘party’ thing. Besides, I’m not old enough to get into any club.”

“I’m sure there are under twenty-one clubs,” Noah said. “But here’s another suggestion. I’m gonna have to go ask Niall before we say for sure, but why don’t we all go to the house and party there? After all, there is the entire attic that none of us have ever been in. It’s huge, and it’s really perfect for a party. What do you think?”

“Sounds fun!” Madi exclaimed. “I’ll go ask Eleanor.”

“Is it alright if I bring a couple of people from my team?” Jesse asked. “They’re cool as well, although they just don’t beat you guys.”

“Sure,” I laughed. “I’ll go ask Niall.” And before they could protest, I began dance running over to the door, where Mr. Sexy-and-Incredible was getting his stuff to go. “Hey. Question.”

“I probably have an answer,” he said, and the smile he already wore brightened. “What is it, Evie?”

“Say we don’t really feel like going out and partying,” I murmured.

He shrugged. “You don’t have to, but why not have fun, Evie? You love to dance.”

“I do,” I agreed. “I just don’t like the whole ‘club’ thing. Too crowded, and, I mean, it is getting close to night time. Dangerously close.”

His eyes narrowed. “You forgot the contacts.”

My lips quirked to the side. “I did. Anyways, Niall, this isn’t what I came to ask you. Could we possibly have a teeny party in the attic? It won’t be many people—only our friends. I mean, we won’t tell anyone no, but really, it’ll just be Noah, Madi, Jesse, Kiley, maybe Eleanor, and a couple people from Blake’s team.”

He smiled. “Sure. Sounds fun. I’ll be down in my room.”

“Oh, come on, Niall,” I teased, and I started poking him. “You love to dance.”

“I’m bringing a friend as well if I come,” he said. “That way, it won’t be suspicious.”

“Bring whoever you want.” I had to make myself not kiss him because I really wanted to, quite a lot. “I guess we’ll see you soon.”

He nodded. “Mmhmm.”

And without another word, I turned and ran—at a normal pace, of course—back to the gradually growing crowd of people. “Uh, he said it was fine. We can order pizza. I have plenty of music for us to dance to, even some I mixed myself.”

“That’s really cool,” Noah smiled. “I didn’t know you were into that kinda thing.”

I shrugged. “Just a hobby, really. Now, we’ve got to get back to make sure it’s all ready. Jesse, you can get everyone there, right?”

“Uh, Ev, this may have to be relocated,” he laughed, and he nervously rubbed the back of his neck. “When I told them about it, they told their friends, who told their friends, and so on. Most of my team, some of Christina’s, and a lot of Adam’s are coming.”

My eyes widened. “Oh dear.”

We needed a new location.

Notes

Can't wait to show you guys the next chapter. :) Lots of fun things happening. This is, unfortunately, more of a filler than anything. I still hope you enjoy it.

For those of you who haven't seen it, you should definitely check out Niall singing A-Team by Ed Sheeran. Most of you probably have, but, hell, I've seen it and still go back to it. <3 Watch here.

Keep being awesome and letting me know what you think! I'll try and do better with updating. Sorry I didn't update yesterday!!

Noah’s lips pressed together. “Have you ever thought about the fact that maybe ‘cooties’ was just a warning word for ‘STD,’ or is that just me?” Now am using that when people say cooties

You seriously wrote about my two favorite things. The Voice and One Direction : ). And the song she auditioned with is amazing. Sick Puppies are awesome
