The Voice

15. Nights Like This

When the camera crews began rolling out around eight that night, we all felt so relieved. Like Niall promised, he had the schedules made by lunch, and he had me somewhere randomly in the middle with Kiley last and Caleb first each day so there wasn’t confusion. It was actually quite random, which I liked.

We were able to act like normal around the house once the cameras were gone. I mean, with them there, we were ourselves, but we just kind of got the feeling that we were too at home normally. Around here, it did feel like home—better than home in some instances.

Also, when the cameras left, I took Noah and Kiley downstairs to show them the piano part of my score. I made sure everyone else was preoccupied—except Niall, who hadn’t talked to me since the very tight, business-like “rehearsal” we did. Mostly, he just told me what he needed to see and had me sing the first line to make sure I was making good progress. It was awkward, mostly because he was pretending really well to be happy even though his eyes told me otherwise.

I really hurt him.

At this point, I was ready to play it on an actual piano and hear how it sounded. I warned them that this was my first time actually playing it, so they knew it wouldn’t be perfect.

Still, I did the best I could, and like Niall told me to do when I played it for him, I sang along the best I could.

“I see you walking with a halo,” I sang, taking the song a bit slower than I actually planned so that I could get the notes right. The words weren’t really “powerful” in most situations, but right now, they meant a lot. “Cover it up, yeah. Cover it up, my baby. No need to try and be a hero. I’ve had enough, yeah. I’ve had enough, my baby. You got a little bit of Tarzan. Let it all out, yeah. Let it all out, my baby. You see, the thrill is in the chase, and I wanna find out. I wanna find out, my baby.”

I could hear someone coming towards us, and my heart began clenching up in my chest. My body knew exactly who it was the moment he stepped into the room, not to mention he had a completely different scent to him than anyone else. What can I say? His cologne/after shave smells incredible.

I didn’t stop, though, and continued playing. “You’re always so nice. I’m getting bored. You say the right things. I’m getting bored. And you always call first. I’m getting bored. Yeah, I’m getting bored.”

Niall surprised me when he stopped me. “There’s more than just the piano part, right?”

I nodded, although I didn’t look into his eyes. “I was just running through it for the first time on a piano.”

“Well, that’s impressive,” he told me, and the gentleness in his voice, the sincerity . . . it caught me off guard. He hadn’t spoken nicely to me since earlier today, and I deserved it. “I really love that. Still, I don’t wanna say for sure until we hear it with everything.”

Noah had been watching me carefully since Niall cut me off, so when I looked at him now through distorted eyes, he realized that Niall had seen the whole “Caleb” deal, or part of it anyways, and he realized that we still needed to work it out.

That’s why when he began dramatically yawning and stretching his arms above his head, everyone in the room knew that he wasn’t really tired.

“I think I’m gonna call it a night,” he said. “Ev, that was awesome. I love it so far. I love you. Have a great rest of the night, all of you.”

Kiley’s bottom lip disappeared between her teeth. “Yeah. I’m actually thinking about going for a walk. Where’s Harley? I’ll take him with me.”

“He’s asleep on my bed,” I said, and I gave her a genuine smile of appreciation. “His leash is on the dresser.”

She just disappeared out of the room with Noah quickly following behind her, leaving us completely alone for a bit.

Niall sighed. “Look, Evie, you were right. I did need a moment to think. I just . . . seeing that scared me. It made me realize that one day, you really could find someone better and move on from me. It also hurt ‘cause I had no idea what was going on. It makes sense now, although I kinda wanna punch him in the face. When you say that you really did try to stop him before he kissed you . . . I believe you. Some may think it’s farfetched, but I trust you, Evie.”

That made me smile, but instead of saying anything at first, I began playing a song I wrote while back home. While still playing, I looked up at him, and our shining eyes met happily.

“I trust you as well, and I’m glad that you trust me,” I said, and his eyes shimmered some more. “I appreciate it. I just thought I could get through it without thinking and still not let anything too bad happen, but then, next thing I know, he’s talking about our babies, and it’s just crazy.” I leaned over and hugged him, which of course meant I stopped the song. “How did it go with the coach?”

“The coach agreed to help me,” he said, and he smiled coyly at me. “The coach said they coulda guessed it would happen, if they really thought about it, and the person also agreed that I had made the right decisions so far.”

That narrowed it down to Adam and Christina because Blake had picked Jesse. Therefore, if he ever slipped and said “he” or “she,” I would know who it was.

I knew my cheeks were heating up just at the thought of him discussing his feelings for me with Adam Levine. It reminded me what they both said at the blind auditions, which only made me blush more.

“It’s really quite adorable when you blush,” he whispered, and I would’ve said something back if I didn’t hear someone’s bedroom door open. Therefore, I moved away from the piano bench and Niall faster than he could see and began searching through the refrigerator aimlessly.
Niall had to move away from the bench as well because he doesn’t play the piano. Instead, he followed me into the kitchen and leaned against the counter behind me. “Anything ready to eat?”

I threw him an apple while I continued to search. “Uh . . . no, but I’m starving as well. I can make up something real quick.” Then, a new idea occurred to me, and I turned back to him with a glowing expression. I could see this in the way his eyes began to gleam as well, just loving the fact that I was glowing. “Do you know how to cook?”

“Of course,” he laughed. “When I was younger, I had to cook for myself while my dad was working, and food is one of my favorite things in the world, ya know.”

“Well, we’re gonna make something,” I told him, and that brightened his mood even more. “We’ll start with cake.”

He didn’t say anything, although I could tell there was something he wanted to say. Unfortunately, he couldn’t because Eleanor was in here to get a bottle of water. The moment I gave him a slight nod, meaning she was back in her room, he leaned in close to my ear and whispered, “Hmm. Learning how to create one of my favorite things with my favorite person. Sounds like my kind of night.”

And let me tell you—it was a fun night. We ended up making a much bigger mess than necessary, which we gladly cleaned up, but by the time the cake was ready, we were covered in flour, and my arms were blotched blue whereas his were blotched green.

Food coloring. What can I say?

While the cake cooled down, we cleaned up our mess, but we didn’t clean ourselves. When people smelled cake, they all came rushing in and laughed at us while Niall began looking for some form of icing.

Noah stood next to Madi, who looked eager to eat some cake. Niall was struggling to find icing, though.

He turned to me with a thing of cream cheese icing. “This is all I could find. Is it gonna work?”

My eyes lit up. “Of course! Cream cheese icing and chocolate cake are a perfect mixture! It’s quite orgasmic, really, and I say we get this cake ready so I can eat it.”

Niall grabbed the icing tool from me and smirked. “I wanna do it.”

Of course, he would go as slow as possible, and he would make sure to make it perfectly spread out and even. Still, the moment he was done, everyone began swarming and getting cake.

Only we would make cake at one in the morning, but you know what? Nights like this one would be something I wouldn’t ever trade for anything.

Especially if it involved that cake!

Notes

The lyrics are from Night Like This by Karmin off their new album, Pulses. People have mixed reviews about Karmin, but personally, I love them. :)

Anyways, I hope you guys enjoy this chapter! There's definitely more to come. Lemme know what you think? :)

Comments

Noah’s lips pressed together. “Have you ever thought about the fact that maybe ‘cooties’ was just a warning word for ‘STD,’ or is that just me?” Now am using that when people say cooties

You seriously wrote about my two favorite things. The Voice and One Direction : ). And the song she auditioned with is amazing. Sick Puppies are awesome
