Embers
Daze
I watched as Harry walked around the bed. He ruffled his hair gently, then helped me up, supporting my weight as I got adjusted on my crutches.
I knew he was avoiding my question.
A puppy came in the room, breaking my thoughts. I shrieked, causing Harry to lose his balance in surprise. "Loki!"
Harry had fortunately managed to catch himself before he fell on me. He planted a quick kiss on my cheek before rolling away and helping me back up. "Sorry about that."
I blushed. "I should be saying sorry - I screamed in your ear."
Harry gave me a warm smile, shaking his head. "It's fine - Loki startled you. But hey, at least you remember him, right?"
I giggled. "I guess. Does that mean Dani...Dani's here?"
Harry shrugged. "Maybe." He finished helping me with the crutches, then lead the way to the living area.
A big grin appeared on my face. "Danielle?" Her name slipped off my tongue at the sight of her, even though I couldn't remember her full name before.
She turned around and smiled. "Emmy?"
I squealed in delight. "Dani! Ya know, I'd run, but I can't...so wait there."
Danielle's expression turned from sad and worried to happiness. "You remembered me?"
I bit my lip in concentration as I made my way over. "Of course...we spent too much time together while the boys were at concerts to not remember you." I just can't remember my own boyfriend...or his band mates.
Danielle smiled, wrapping her arms around me as soon as I got in her reach. "I missed you so much...we were all so worried...Eleanor and Perrie, especially."
I rested my head on her shoulder, hugging her the best I could with crutches under my arms.
I pulled back to look at her. "Where are Perrie and Eleanor, anyway?"
Dani shrugged. "Perrie's with the girls in America, and Eleanor's at collage."
I nodded, pulling back slowly as she kept her hands on my upper arms, to steady me. "Can we go on a girl's day out? Just us?" I asked, biting my lip hesitatingly.
Danielle smiled widely. "Of course. The boys have to go to the studio today, anyway."
I clapped my hands happily, quickly grabbing my crutches and adjusting myself before I fell. "I should...go get ready then." I gave Dani a sheepish smile before turning around and gesturing Harry to follow me.
He was the only one who helped me change...I felt more comfortable with him.
Fifteen minutes later, I was changed. I'd borrowed Harry's sweatshirt, and even if it was a bit too big, I loved it.
I gave Harry a grateful smile and hobbled out, letting Dani lead the way to her car. Thankfully, it was a low one, so I wouldn't need help getting in or out. Before we left, Harry rushed out, holding a card. "Dani, wait!"
I rolled the window down. "Hey, you," I murmured, smiling slightly. Something about this situation seemed familiar.
Harry leaned in, grabbed my hand, and folded my fingers around the card. "Use my card, please," he said, pecking my cheek gently before he left.
I blushed. "Why can't I use mine?" I whined, smiling slightly.
Harry looked over his shoulder. "You left yours inside, babe!" he shouted back, throwing a wink at me before he walked inside.
I laughed to myself as Danielle took off and I rolled the window back up. "Damn."
Danielle laughed. "You guys did that every time you went shopping...arguing over who's card you'd use."
I smiled at my hand, still holding the card he'd given me. "I thought that felt familiar."
"Emmy Lou, how do you feel?"
"Emmy! Where's Harry?"
"Danielle! Are you and Liam still together?"
I sighed as Danielle and I pushed through the paps, giving several of them death glares if they got too close. There was no way I'd be going back to the hospital before the six weeks were over. I wanted to get off these damned crutches and just have to deal with a knee brace.
Yes, I'd hurt my knee in the accident.
Don't judge.
When we got to the car, the first thing Danielle did was order me to get in.
I hesitated. "You sure you don't want help with the bags, Dani?" I asked, pointing to the trolley full of clothes bags.
Danielle waved me off. "No offense babe, but you'd be more of a problem than help, with your knee."
I gave her a small, crooked smile. "Fine.."
"Did you use my card?"
I jumped when arms slid around my waist, losing my balance and falling back against Harry. He chuckled, and I could feel his smirk against my shoulder.
As you can tell, I'm a clumsy person. Crutches don't help.
Still, even if I was a bit annoyed, I couldn't help the small giggle that left my lips. "Harry!"
He laughed, steadying me before letting go. "Sorry," he said, not sounding sorry at all as a playful glint shone in his eyes. "So did you use it?"
I rolled my eyes playfully. "Duh. I didn't want to let Dani use hers, and I couldn't use mine, so what choice did I have, you prat?"
Harry's eyes widened as he pretended to look hurt, placing a hand over his chest. "Babe, you didn't mean that?"
I pursed my lips in attempt not to laugh. I love you.
That one thought broke me out of my playful mood. I blinked.
"Babe, you didn't mean that, did you?"
I glared at Harry. "I don't want to be a secret. Are you ashamed of me, or something?"
Harry pulled me closer. "Never. It's Modest! - they don't want us-"
"Tell them to shut the-"
"Listen to me, please-"
"Choose, me or-"
"I can't-"
"Then you do-"
"Why won't you-"
"No, you lis-"
My words were cut off by familiar lips pressing against mine. "They don't want us together, because they think you'll cause bad publicity. I want to be with you. Understand?"
I nodded, pursing my lips. "So we can't be together often?"
Harry wrapped his arms around my waist. "You can move in. If they ask, I'll say you needed help, and the boys didn't have room in their houses."
I gripped the material at his waist. "But they'll know. It's obvious the other boys have room."
Harry smiled. "Then I'll just say you're a friend, and needed a place to live. Okay?"
I shook my head, smiling. "You'll sound desperate, ya know?"
His chest rumbled gently as he laughed. "Don't care." He paused for a second before whispering, "Just don't leave."
I smiled more. "I love you."
"Emmy? Emmy!"
I blinked, thoroughly confused. "What?"
Harry was standing in front of me, concern taking over his features. "You looked completely zoned out. You okay?"
I nodded, running a hand through my hair. "Yeah. I just remembered something."
He went from concerned to hopeful. "What was it?"
I laughed quietly, covering my mouth slightly. I could practically feel the excitement radiating from him. "We were talking about Modest! not wanting us together."
His expression fell ever so slightly. "Oh. How much do you remember?"
I leaned into him. "Up until you told me not to leave," I murmured, closing my eyes slightly. And I said I loved you.
He sounded a bit disappointed when he mumbled back, "That's good."
Guilt washed over me. If I hadn't wanted to get something to eat, instead of making dinner, I wouldn't be in this position. Harry wouldn't be so hurt. I would remember everything.
Fingers found my chin, and I found my head being tilted up. "Hey...don't blame any of this on yourself," Harry murmured, furrowing his eyebrows.
I pursed my lips. "I said all of that out loud, didn't I?"
His lips turned up in the smallest smile ever. I resisted the urge to poke his dimple, which was just barely poking out. "Yes."
I sighed, resting my head on his shoulder and flinching when pain shot up my leg. "Pain meds.." I mumbled, more to myself than anyone else.
Instantly, Harry made sure I wasn't going to fall and left the room, headed towards the kitchen, where the medicine was. I moved backwards and plopped onto the bed, feeling exhausted.
The door opened, and Harry came in, holding a water bottle and my medicine. He sat down next to me and watched me as I downed the pills, his expression sad. "Thanks," I murmured, pushing my shoes off and curling up on the bed the best I could with a leg sticking out.
Harry's expression didn't change as he nodded. "I'm going to the gym...I'll bring home dinner, yeah?"
I smiled slightly. "Not pizza," I mumbled playfully.
He gave me a slight smile. "Got it." He leaned down and kissed my nose gently before getting up and shutting the door behind him carefully.
