The Bodyguard.

Chapter Sixteen

The boys and I had to be ready to walk out the door by eight o'clock this morning; everyone is dragging ass. We have a busy day today. First, One Direction has a photo shoot. After, we will get lunch and head over to the place where they have to do a live televised performance. Then, they have to do an interview. Depending on what time they finish with everything, they might have to stop by the studio for a couple hours. Here's to another day of plastering a smile on my face for the cameras.
Today has not begun smoothly. Some poor intern spilled coffee all over the clothes for the shoot, so they were running around trying to get replacements. The next thing to go wrong was the lighting; we were having temporary electrical issues. And now we are just waiting for One Direction's stylist to get here. She called about half an hour ago and said she was running late. The shoot was supposed to start an hour ago, but everything has been going wrong so nobody is on time.
I'm sitting with the guys in the dressing room when a woman with almost white hair comes trampling through the door and into the room carrying multiple bags and a toddler on her hip. Harry jumps up and takes the child from her arms immediately while Louis and Zayn help her with her bags.
“Harry!” the little girl exclaims, clutching her little arms around his neck.
“Hey Lux! I missed you.” Harry tells her, hugging her back tightly and kissing her cheek.
He sits next to me, positioning Lux comfortably on his lap. “Lux, this is Max. Can you tell her hello?” Her sparkling blue eyes peered up at me as she buried her face in Harry's neck. In that moment, I was jealous of a two year old. “Hi Lux!” I said smiling. She gives me a small wave but otherwise doesn't make another sound before crawling off Harry and running into Niall's arms.
“She's cute.” I say to Harry.
He smiles, “Isn't she?”
“Have you known her her whole life?”
“Yeah, Lou's been with us since the beginning. I knew her since before she was even pregnant. Why do you ask?”
I shrug, “You just lit up when she got here. It was adorable.” I pinch his cheeks which now have a slight blush to them and he slaps my hand away, laughing.
“Harry! Get your bum over here and let me fix that crazy hair of yours.” Lou calls out to Harry after she finishes with Liam. After the boys have their hair and make-up done, the photo shoot begins.
The boys are shy at first, but as the shoot progresses they begin to loosen up and they are laughing and goofing off like normal and looking handsome while doing so. I bet they got some great shots. I love watching Harry, in a non creepy way, of course. He is just so mesmerizing and funny and cute but sexy at the same time and oh my glob I really need to stop thinking about him so much.
Tearing my eyes away from the beautiful green eyed British God, I find myself looking at a handsome Irish God instead. I feel guilty for what happened, I should have never let it get that far. I didn't think Niall actually wanted to get with me, I was just having fun flirting with him. I feel guilty for kissing one of Harry's best friends. I feel guilty for enjoying it and wanting it to go further. I feel guilty for lying straight to Jackson's face. I feel guilty for not talking to Cassie sooner. I feel guilty for having my parents come pick me up the night they died because if they didn't, they might still be alive. I feel guilty for running away from my problems and hurting the people I care about in the process. I feel guilty for the baby I miscarried; for unknowingly killing him/her with my stupid fucking addiction.
I'm just feeling guilty, okay?
I didn't realize I had zoned out until Niall came up to me and wrapped an arm around my shoulder, “You okay, beautiful?”
Oh, yeah. In addition to Niall's flirting getting even more intense, he also calls me cute things like beautiful that make me blush but I don't want to blush because only Harry should make me feel this way. I'm rambling a lot today, wow.
“Huh? Oh, yeah. I'm fine. Just zoned out a little.” I answer him, voice flat.
He starts to walk us back to the dressing room, arm still firmly around my shoulder. “You say that you're 'fine' a lot, but me thinks you're lying.”
I just shrug, not wanting to get into the details right now. “I am fine. I'm better than I have been in a long time. So don't worry about me, Nialler.” I poke his stomach in hopes he will believe me. He gives me a look that says he will let it go for now, but this conversation isn't over.
“Fine, but I want you to talk to me if you need to. Okay?” he stares intently into my eyes. I nod and barely say above a whisper, “Okay.” Niall kisses my temple softly before entering the dressing room. That's the first time he's done that and I have to admit, it gave me some butterflies. Cool, another thing to feel guilty about.
I go join the other bodyguards while we wait for the boys.
I've let my guard down around these guys faster than I ever thought I would have, especially with Harry. I'm almost too comfortable. I don't want everyone asking me what's wrong all the time; I need to have more of a poker face. I'll work on that.
We just finished our lunch and are waiting for Lou to finish her phone call. We can see her in an empty corner talking intensely on her phone. When she hangs up, she calls Jackson over. A few minutes later, Jackson is requesting my presence.
“Whats up?” I ask approaching them.
Lou looks like she is about to cry. “Lou has a family emergency and doesn't have anyone to watch Lux.” Jackson says.
Okay?
I stare at them blankly.
“Can you please watch her?” Lou asks desperately.
“Me? Uhm..I'm not really good with kids.” I bite my lip nervously. I can feel my heart beating faster and faster just at the thought of babysitting Lux.
“Please, Max. I would ask one of the boys but they're too busy and I know you can't really act as a bodyguard right now anyway.” She begs.
“Plus, it would look good for the press.” Jackson presses.
I glance at the table at Lux and am instantly reminded of what I lost three years ago. I can't possibly do this, can I? I haven't been around children in years, let alone take care of one. I can barely look at a kid without being painfully reminded of my own child that was taken away from me before it even had a chance to live.
I have to say no.
But the way Lou looked at me with so much desperation in her eyes, I couldn't say no. I had to be selfless for once. She clearly doesn't have another choice. That and Jackson was giving me a very pointed look.
“Okay, I'll do it.” I tell them.
“Oh thank you so much!” Lou gives me a giant hug and lets her tears flow freely. I wonder what the emergency is?
“No problem.” Lie. Such a huge fucking lie. “I hope everything turns out okay.”
She goes back to the table to collect her things. I see Harry try and talk to her but she is in too much of a hurry to explain. He follows her to the door and gives her a tight hug before she leaves. His confused expression tells me she didn't tell him anything either.
“Max, consider yourself relieved of your guard duties today. Little Lux is a handful.” Jackson informs me.
“Gee, thanks.” I say less than enthusiastically.
He laughs and claps me on the shoulder, “You'll be fine.”
I take a deep breath.
How do I get myself into these situations?
