The Bodyguard.

Chapter One

"Hey mom! Can you please give me some money? I'm going shopping after school with Cassie." I ask rushing into the kitchen, running late for school.
"Max, money doesn't just grow on trees." My mother retorts playfully, handing me a fifty dollar bill. Awesome.
"Thanks, you're the best! Love you!" I yell over my shoulder, heading for the front door.
"Don't forget we're going out for dinner tonight with George and Sheila!" She calls to me. I yell an okay and walk the couple of blocks to school.
Ugh, George and Sheila are so annoying. I don't know why my parents are friends with them. Tonight will be fun.
Plugging in my headphones, I tune out the world on my short walk to that dreadful place we call high school. I really need to get a job. I hate having to ask my parents for money all the time. It's not like we're poor, but they make enough to be financially stable.
My name is Maddox Rose Calder, but I prefer to be called Max. I'm 16 years old, born and raised in Huntington Beach, California. My father is Vice President for Jacobs Security and my mom works at the local YMCA part time. My best friend is Cassie Jacobs, her parents own the company my father works at. The Jacobs are more than close family friends, they're family.
I was just minding my own business when I was shoved, nearly almost falling on my face. Ripping out my earbuds angrily, I turn to the culprit ready to give them a piece of my mind, but there stands Cassie laughing at me.
"Oh, hello to you too. Bitch." I greet her, shoving her back a little. She giggles, "Hey." I sigh, wishing I looked like Cassie. She's a gorgeous blonde with the perfect petite body and has boys flocking all over her.
"Are we going shopping after school today?" Cassie asks me as we walk up to the entrance. "Yeah, my mom gave me 50 bucks."
"Nice." The bell rings and we go our separate ways, knowing we will see each other at lunch.
~After school at the mall~
"Why can't we go in yet?" I ask Cassie. We are standing outside the enterance to the mall and she won't tell me why we can't go in yet.
"Because." She answers.
"Because why?"
She doesn't reply, so I know she did something I won't be happy with. "Cassie, what did you do?"
She looks down nervously, "Well, I sort of invited Ben and Jake to come with us..."
"What!" I exclaim. If I was drinking something, I surely would have spit it out. "You have got to be kidding me! Why would you do that?"
"I just want you to get to know people, Max! I know you like Jake and Ben says he's feeling you too."
"Oh, so you talk to Ben about me. That's great." I snap. Ben is Cassie's boyfriend, they have been dating for a couple months and Jake is his best friend. The four of us have hung out before, but I usually make up an excuse to go home. Yes, I think Jake is cute, but that doesn't mean I want him to be my boyfriend! Sometimes Cassie just doesn't know when to stop pushing.
"Why don't you ever ask me these things first?"
"There they are!" Cassie exclaims, waving to them from across the parking lot. She turns to me, "Max, you have no social life and your 16. You need to branch out. If you promise me you will try to have fun today, I won't ever force you into it again."
I sigh, thinking about just running away, but as they grow closer I start getting a better look at Jake, and how good he looks. I bite my lip and take a deep breath. "Fine."
She squeals in happiness and quickly hugs me, "Thank you! You won't regret it, I promise."
"Don't make promises you can't keep."
Ben and Cassie kiss in hello and Jake and I awkwardly say hello to each other. I think Cassie is lying to me about Jake, he barely knows me so I don't think he could be into me yet.
~Four hours later~
"That was hilarious! Did you see their faces? Oh, man." Jake says, laughing his ass off. We all were. We had been messing with people in the midst of shopping. I actually had a good time and loosened up a little. Jake seems like a nice guy.
I look at the time and swear under my breath, "Uh, Cas I gotta get home, my parents are having company over for dinner."
She frowns, "I was hoping we could watch a movie."
"I can take you home if you want, Ben and I drove separately." Jake offers. I didn't even have time to accept before Cassie answered for me. Okay then.
We say our goodbyes and Jake and I walk to his car. It was a quiet, yet comfortable ride. We just listened to music. "Want me to walk you to your door?" He asks politely.
I was about to say yes when I remembered my dad was inside. "No, that's all right. Thank you for the ride, Jake."
He smiles, "No problem."
I open the door. "Max, wait." I close the door.
"Yeah?"
"I...I was wondering if you wanted to maybe go out on a date with me sometime? I had a fun time with you today." Jake asks me, the blush on his cheeks evident. He is too cute.
I feel my cheeks begin to warm. I figure I should live it up a little, I am 16 and never had a boyfriend before, after all. So, I swallow the nervous lump in my throat and tell him yes.
Jake grins and kisses me on my cheek, "Awesome. I'll see you at school tomorrow?" I nod and we say our goodbyes.
I couldn't stop smiling that night.

~Six months later~
"Hey babe," Jake says while wrapping his arms around my waist from behind and kissing my cheek. I smile, "Hey you."
After that day at the mall, Jake took me out that weekend to dinner and a movie. We were dating by the end of the week and have been together for six months. I'm really happy, everything in my life is perfect.
Christmas is coming up, I'm excited. This will be my first Christmas with a boyfriend. I am completely inlove with Jake and he feels the same way. We just recently started having sex. I want to be on birth control but my parents will freak out, especially my dad, so we're using condoms for now.
"Ready for the movie?" Jake asks me. I nod and we go into the theater.
Two hours later, I turn my phone on after the film is over and my phone is completely blown up by Cassie. I call her back right away, not even reading any texts first.
"Max! Thank God! Why haven't you been answering my calls?" Cassie yells at me.
"I was in the movies with Jake. What's going on?"
Jake looks at me questionongly. I shrugged before hearing the five words that changed my life forever.

"Max, there's been an accident..."
