Diving
Pool Deck Madness
“Ya ladies ready?” I ask my two besties, Sileea and Darrie as tuck my hair into my Swim Cap
“Sure, why not?” replied Sileea as we walked out onto the pool deck.
It was a warm, sunny but windy day in California. The girls and I hadn’t trained together for a while so we decided to go to the swim pool at Darrie’s campus. At the pool deck, I realized that the lifeguards were standing straighter and looking more alert than usual, and there was an ENORMOUS crowd of girls a the pool entrance. I exchanged a glance with my best friends, and we gave each other the look meaning ‘let’s investigate’.
We walked through the crowd to find the guards blocking off our view, one of them was Darrie’s brother, Tom.
“Hey Tom, watcha guardin’ over there?” asks Darrie. She has that look of determination in her eyes that only Sileea and I can read, it’s the ‘tell me or I’ll somehow force it out of you look’. She really hates crowds, she’s claustrophobic and if she’s in one for too long, she gets panic attacks.
“Celebrities,” her brother replies. Tom looks quite similar to Darrie, he’s got the same brown hair, big eyes and high cheekbones.
“Which ones? You do realize there are loads of them out there right?” challenged Darrie, you see what I mean by she just won’t leave a problem alone?
“Ever heard of One Direction?” Said Tom with a smirk. He knew that we were fans of their music; we play it all the time. But the boys’ personal lives, we don’t like to put our attention to. It feels like stalking when that happens, and trust me, we’ve had it happen to us a couple of times because we’re minor celebrities. There was this one time when the three of us had trained together, as we walked out of the facility, this girl came running over to us, stating all these random facts about us. I think it's safe to say that we were quite freaked out.
As soon as her brother said that, Darrie, Sileea and I exchanged a look and together we asked, “What the hell are they doing here??!!” Right as we said that, everyone turned around to look at us. Whoops, maybe we were a bit too loud, us three tend to be like that sometimes. I sucked my lips in, trying not to laugh nor look guilty which was hard considering the fact that Tom was doubled over laughing.
“Pfft, whatever.” Said Sileea as she rolled her eyes, “Hurry up girls, we’re gonna miss out on training if we don’t go soon.”
Just as we were leaving, Tom yelled out to us, “Just a quick FYI, they’re taking a dive at the pool today.” We all groaned. We hated it when non-experienced swimmers joined with our training. Oh my god, all the over-lapping and foot touching and the loud sound of panting.
*Half and hour later, after land warm-ups*
I dived into the pool for my warm-up, a 200m IM. After quickly zipping through my warm-up, I go do my butterfly drills. The L. A. –R. A. – B.A, the 4-4-4-4 and the I to Y; continuously repeating those takes about and hour or so before they get boring so I get my paddles and pull buoy and do a few quick freestyle pull sprints to get my arms warmed up.
I get tired and realize that the girls have all just finished their first sets.
“Hey guys, 10 minute water-toilet break?” I kinda shout to them. They both nod. We get out of the water and wrap a towel around ourselves. ‘Socializing’ as we use the toilet and take big sips of water from our water bottles.
By the time we get back out on the pool deck, we see Rachel, the swim pool manager talking as she leads a few people out towards the other swim pools before coming over to the one we’re occupying, I guess she’s giving some people a tour. Once they get closer, we see that she’s leading One Direction over to our pool. Apparently, the girls see them too and we groan as one, “Yay! Inexperienced swimmers alert!” Great, sarcastic Sileea’s back. But Darrie doesn’t disagree with her and neither do I.
“Boys, this is the last swim pool, you will swimming in this one since the other ones have been completely booked. These are Darrie, Emily and Sileea. They are Olympic level swimmers and will show you what their training looks like. They will also be giving you a simple training set so that you can experience what swim training feels like. Bye, and have a nice day!” Says Rachel, while giving us girls each a hard glare, she knows we don’t like strangers but this is the only open pool and we are the most experienced swimmer here, not to mention they are ‘first-class celebrities.’
The boys turn to look at us and all their eyes widen. I wave my hands in front of their faces and yell, “HELLO!!!”, and they all jump up, startled, while us girls start laughing.
“Ok, boys go change into you swim suits and meet us out here in five. You know where the changing rooms are, right?” Says Darrie in a commanding tone.
*Five minutes later*
The boys walk out of the changing room in their swim trunks. The girls start cracking up because the boys don’t realize that swim trunks create loads of resistance and slow you down a lot. The boys turn their attention to us and give us weird looks.
“What are you laughing at?” asks Liam with his head tilted and curiosity in his eyes.
“You guys. We’re laughing at you guys!” I say while trying to contain my laughter.
“What’s so funny?” Harry asks suspiciously with his eyes narrowed.
“Well, even if we told you, you wouldn’t get it.” Sileea speaks up.
“C’mon girls, let’s start training them and get this over with,” sighs Darrie, waving us all towards the pool.
