Chapter 23: Driving
Chapter 23: Driving
Nell’s POV
What is wrong with me?
The question circled through my mind, keeping me awake all night while I heard Niall’s soft breathing to my right. We weren’t cuddling or anything, because I’d torn myself away from him to talk to Harry, and when I climbed back in I felt so dirty that I didn’t want to touch him. I couldn’t believe that I kissed Harry.
Furthermore, I couldn’t believe that I had feelings for Harry. When I finally get something good in my life, Niall, of course I have to fuck it up by liking someone else. But it was true, though. I did like Harry.
But I also liked Niall and—
I need to stop this.
Harry’s POV
I must have fallen asleep, because I woke up and it was nine. I pulled on a pair of jeans over my boxers, and stumbled out to the living room, hoping that I would be alone, but of course Nell was there, pulling her shoes on.
“Hi,” I said, shakily.
She looked up and stared at me, her bright blue eyes looking dead into mine. “Hey, Harry.” She stood up. She had her bag ready and her coat on, and I could tell that she was about to leave. “I…I’m sorry for last night.”
“Let’s just not talk about it.”
She nodded. “Okay. I’m going to go home, I have to watch Clyde. So…I’ll see you later, right?”
“Yeah,” I said. “Do you need a lift?” I knew that it was a bad idea as soon as I said it, but I just couldn’t restrain myself. I couldn’t exactly withdraw the statement, so I let it hang in the air, filling the room with awkwardness. Please say no, I thought. I won’t be able to resist you if you don’t. I didn’t want to do this to Niall. It had finally hit me that he really liked her, and he was my best friend. I wasn’t about to steal his almost-girlfriend.
Even if she had a crush on me.
“That would actually be nice.” Damn it all, I thought.
“Okay, let me just go grab a shirt.” I said. I ran back to my room and pulled a shirt over my head, threw on some shoes, and came back out.
“Ready?” I asked.
“Yeah.” She answered. We walked over to the elevator and rode it down in silence. We didn’t say anything until we got to my car, parked in a corner of the garage. “So,” I asked. “How did you like the party last night?”
“It was good.” She said, drawing out the last word and smiling to herself. We got in the car and I started to drive away, making my way through the packed streets of London.
It had been silent for almost ten minutes when she said, “Look, Harry. I can’t not talk about it. I’m sorry, I just can’t.”
I sighed. She was probably right, we shouldn’t just leave it where it was. There were too many unanswered questions. “Okay. Yeah, I understand. Well…what do you want to say?” I asked, hoping I wouldn’t be hurt by whatever she needed to get off her chest. Which was unlikely. Everything about her made me ache with longing—the way she smiled to herself, and tucked her hair behind her ears…also, she had a pretty good ass. So that was nice, too.
“I shouldn’t have kissed you. Bad idea. Did not help me get over you in the least.”
“Same. Totally just made my feelings for you worse.”
“You have feelings for me?”
“Yeah. You have feelings for me?” I asked.
“Yeah.”
I pondered that for a while. “Well that’s really bad, because Niall has feelings for you, and you guys are pretty much dating.”
“I know. I don’t know what to do.”
“You need to make a decision.” I said, after some time, keeping my eyes straight on the road.
We didn’t say anything more after that.
